The mobile phone thread
Just thought it would keep all our geek talk about mobiles that is spread across several threads across time in here. Iphone bashing is not required but it is encouraged.
So let me start with a rant. Ever since the introduction of the ipad there have been romours about the new iphone. Even with no information at all available at this time, the consensus among apple zombies is that its going to be the best fucking device in the entire history of the universe. Well if apple fans can get excited over unsubstantiuated romours then so can those of us who are lookijng for something more than a fashion addon in our mobile phone.
Saying that, we know that the HTC HD2 is a device that is worthy of selling your soul for. So its rumoured replacement is bound to be on a whole new level of awesome.

For the daydreamers, here's an HTC HD3 rumor that we've just overheard. Warning, impossible specs ahead: a 4.5" touchscreen (1280 x 800 pixels), 115 x 65 x 10 mm (yeah, right), 1.5GHz Snapdragon with 1080p video decoding, 720p video capture via an 8MP camera. Oh, did we mention the 4G connectivity and the 1800mAh battery? Good luck fitting all that inside such a slim body.
WINDOWS 7 phone, where ya at?!

I've a rooted & modded Moto Droid which keeps me relatively happy. It's got a rooted version of android 2.1 (rooted from the Nexus 1) so some features are buggy as there's no official 2.1 droid release yet (that I know of). So when I feel like being a loser I can adjust the processor min and max speeds, allowing me to overclock the 550mhz droid to potential maximum 1.2 ghz, although it's really not necessary. Super nintendo played almost perfectly smooth before I could adjust the cpu. Furthermore the relatively small battery gets just fucking owned over 800mhz.
I can make phone calls on my phone, and sometimes I can even write text messages. It's awesome!

I want that N900. Maemo FTW!
PS: I currently have a BlackBerry 9700, Nokia N95-3, Sony Ericsson Z750a (debranded though), & one functional watch phone. Active SIMs: 4 US, 6 UK, 1 Belgium (Belgian?).
does bashing the iphone make you alpha geek? that's what every geek seems to think...
All about the block cell phone.

I got the N97, and they released the N900 right after.
Get an iPhone 3GS and they release a new one after.
Get an HD2 and they will release an HD3.
You're always going to be fucked because there's always something better.
At least we can be happy that all of the smartphones are actually pretty damn good. None of them are shit because they all do quite a shitload of things, but nobody is ever happy because there's something better out there.
My HD2 will last me the next 12 months, then I will most probably move over to Android with whatever is similar to the HTC Supersonic at that time.
As much as I have enjoyed WM over the years, niggles included, WP7S looks like total and utter fail.

wrong thread boobee
just an FYI
The only correct way to pluralize "BlackBerry" is "BlackBerry smartphones"
BlackBerries, Blackberry's, and BlackBerrys are all incorrect.
Straight from RIM's branding guidelines.

Microsoft just mentioned in a Q&A session here at MIX10 in no uncertain terms that clipboard operations won't be supported on Windows Phone 7 Series... so that's that. Kind of ironic considering that the WinMo of old has been enjoying the functionality since time immemorial, isn't it? Of course, anything is possible going forward -- they've said on several occasions in different talks and sessions this week that they're already looking at a number of enhancements that were scoped out of the initial release of the platform -- but for the phones you buy this holiday season, don't expect to be copying anything between apps. Update: We just super-double-ultra-plus-confirmed this with Microsoft -- Windows Phone 7 Series will not have copy and paste functionality. There is a data-detection service built into the text-handling API that will recognize phone numbers and addresses, but Microsoft says most users, including Office users, don't really need clipboard functionality. We... respectfully disagree? Sure, let's leave it at that.
next iPhone?

Well what do you know about this? With all those rumors flying around that the iPhone 4G we'd spotted was no more than a Japanese knock-off of an Apple product, it was starting to look like this thing was too good to be true. That is until one of the Engadget editors spotted what seems to be solid proof that this is -- in fact -- the next iPhone. If you'll recall, the night before the iPad was revealed, we had leaked shots of the device from what appeared to be an Apple test lab. Upon further inspection of these pictures today, the aforementioned editor discovered that the new iPhone 4G we've just gotten photos of is actually sitting on the table beside the iPad prototype! Imagine how blown our minds were when we realized we have had a photo of the next iPhone for months! As you can see in the pic above, the left side of the new device is clearly visible on this table in the upper right hand corner, and since we believe that these photos come directly from an Apple testbed, it's hard to deny that the phone you've just seen is in fact the real deal. Not only that, but we suspect that the device on the tablet itself is also a version of the new phone (you can see what looks like aluminum along the bottom) which seems to be housed in some type of iPhone 3G-like case. Additionally, a source -- who confirms this is the next Apple iPhone -- also tells us that the device apparently does have a higher res screen on-board, a front-facing camera, a higher resolution camera with flash, and takes MicroSIM cards (that's the little "button" around the side you see in the TwitPic which is floating around the internet). We're working on uncovering more info, but right now you can take a look at the proof above for yourself, and in the gallery below.
