RotR 2002: Oakie, Max Graham, bbb, Acosta, et al

Im kicking myself for not bringing a camera...

Living in Colorado means decent trance shows, and Boulder has an excellent club...but going to school in Michigan and not being able to get to the big TO means missing a shitload of good stuff. Thusly, every summer i go to Rave on the Rocks, alt its been called numerous things over the past few years.

The TA board has a wealth of experience, and many more priviledged memebers who live IN the scene, or at least get decent access to it beyond live sets. I am not one of those people

Massive lineups in NYC, DC, Gatecrasher, Ibiza or the Netherlands are the shit. A 10000 person club is beyond my wildest imagination. Still, Red Rocks Ampetheatre is EASILY in the running for best venue.
last years show

Plus Max Graham was there.

Being that im restricted to few huge events yearly, this is like a pilgrimage. Sure, TA and ethernet are the reason for my trance obsession, but it was BT at 2000s show which made me buy GU 013, and things got out of control from then on.

Last Saturdays show wasnt really different. Its pretty shitty that more Rocky Mountain trancers either cant get to it, dont post about it, or that all of you cant get here every summer.

Yes, the lineup is cookie cutter and mainstream.

Yes, a radio station hosted it and it had to end before 12.

Yes, oakie played U2(which isnt trite here)...

But thats not the point. SHIT, the parking lot was more exciting than most raves ive been to. Its sorta like TA without the internet. It was a community of electronica lovers only rivaled here, for one night having a blast. Oakie owned the event as he usually does here, pushing Acosta to spin after the hometown opener, strange but true. BBB was what he is- bouncy bass to wind the crowd up. Okay, but then im a TA. Graham...shit. Between him, PvD and Tiesto, i thot it would be years before seeing that. I got to see him twice this summer. He seemed more comfortable in a club setting(he blew the roof off) and i HAD to shake the mans hand. Great guy. Here he seemed a but more tentative(perhaps he has seen the video for Sunday Bloody Sunday, that would do it for me). Not even I expected his big finale to be hip hop - it was madness. Oakie, the ever hated, ever loved DJ played an anthology. His set began with newish stuff, breakbeat that sounded just a bit older than his 538 set in spring. As usual, his crowd pleasing began with Rendesvous, and why not - its freakin Oakie. Despite the short set, with 3 encores heh, it was magic. The arrogant TA COULD gripe. I couldnt.

Ferry Corstens Punk is old to all of you...but he dropped it on a largely unsuspecting audience(i believe) and it was more than words can truly describe.

The first RotR happened in 1999. Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. Hopefully it continues. Hopefully I wont be the only one on here 'raving' about it. Hopefully some kind there the other night discovered these forums...

Smile Anyone know where to find this live set?

I had a blast at this show, I got there a little late and hung out in the lot a little too long, but found a spot right when bad boy bill started his set....It was definitely better than last year, the lighting was fricken good, i wish they brought back the laser they had from the 2000 show though...

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew where i could get a copy of the performances from the show?

Thx!

I haven't been into trance long enough to have even heard about RotR, even though i live about 8 miles from Red Rocks I would have loved to have gone though. i heard a lot of things about the Chemical Bros/Fatboy Slim show back in '99, though i did not know that that was the RotR (just a CB/FS show).

I'd also like to hear some of what i missed out on, if anyone has something.

Well, the party began in 1999 as FB/CB at Red Rocks. This was the first time one of these acts spun in the US, and i think it was Slim.

I dont believe it was called Rave on the Rocks until the second year(my first) when the line up was Oakie, Hernan Canttaneo, BT, Aphrodite, Static Revenger, and others Im undoubtedly forgetting. That show, especially BT, was the reason for my trance addiction.

The year after that, I think they called it 'Weekend of E', and while they maintained that 'E' meant electronica- this is a more questionable title than saying 'rave'. This was a 2 day/night event with Crystal Method, Static Revenger, Dj Dan playing the night i went. and others i fail to remember the other night(didnt go). In the spring, KTCL, the radio station that sets this up claimed they would get Pvd for this show. Ultimately the lineup of both nights was lacking straight trance, and no PvD made it xtra disappointing. Big Lasers tho!

This year reverted to the Rave moniker again, alt they usually crossed it out. It was only one night, but ive already ranted about it already.

As for getting a copy, VERY VERY unlikely. I wish it would happen to. 933 puts the show together, but is seriously lacking in REAL electronic music. And thusly a compilation wont come im afraid. It isnt broadcast either...bummer. On radio 102.1 weve got better electronic music...but its not perfect. Hopefully if that station sticks around they can one up these shows, cause theyre the best thing weve got besides the annual Caffeine rave and some questionable club life(not including Soma in Boulder(wish i was 21)).
