Downtown Gym Recommendations
I'm getting back into working out after a *cough* two year *cough* hiatus. (after discovering the scene, Sundays at CZ became my cardio...)
But I'm back to running and feeling in my groove.. time for a new gym. I'm not looking for a pick-up joint and not looking for a women's-only gym.
Other than spinning and yoga, (which I do elsewhere), I'm not into classes - I like to focus on free-weights and cardio and want to work with a good trainer.
System Fitness in BloorWest Village is great but it's not convenient for me to get to anymore ~ ideally, I'm looking south of St.Clair/ north of Queen, and between Yonge and Landsdowne. It's probably going to end up being a choice between GoodLife and Extreme... opinions?
TIA
post pic please
I love my 24hr Goodlife in Aurora.
The choice between goodlife and extreme is really which one is the lesser of two evils. I would go with goodlife. Although if you're paying for spin and yoga elsewhere (which probably run you about 15-20 bucks a class, am I right?) have you thought about getting a small set of weights to workout at home? You'd be really amazed with the level of workout you can get with your own bodyweight or a small, uncomplicated amount of resistance.
As for cardio, spin burns so many calories...2-3 really solid classes/week will match 3-4 workouts in the gym.

If you want a balanced work out that is sure to keep the pounds off, try Muay Thai. I've been doing this for a few months now, and it really whips you into shape in a hurry. I have a fast metabolism so keeping the pounds off doesn't apply to me, but I like it because in 3 short months I feel like I'm near the best shape I've ever been in. Many of the classes at my gym (www.tkmt.ca) have more girls than guys because Muay Thai training will result in a slender but toned body due to the nature of the exercises involved.
I've attended standard gyms on and off for 8 years, so I'm really liking this as a change. I feel that instructional classes push you that extra little bit beyond the level that you would nomrally get to on your own because you don't want to look weaker than everyone else in the class. Also, in addition to staying in shape, you're learning how to defend yourself.

btw- to add to the search for gyms... any good sports nutrition shops downtown? I know there's one on Yonge close to Wellsley (I think)... I haven't walked-in... Looking for product variety that's not over-priced.
