coachella - orbital

so i camped out all three days, only got to take a shower once, whole festival was wayyyy crowded.

but last night i got to see orbital live and it was well worth it. hearin halcyon mixed with bon jovi shot thru the heart song was sooo fun. but their set took me back to the early/mid 90's techno sound - which has a sweet spot in my heart. (im been listenin to edm since early 90s, so it takes me back to my roots lol) i loved it and made the festival worth it.

tiesto - played the top ten vocal trance hits, no surprise there, but its great to see edm on top billing. yeah yeah, i know all you guys are saying tiesto is sh!t, but hey, im all for more edm everywhere.

deadmouse...ummm, i have to say, he is a very good businessman with a good gimmick that everyone just eats up. very fun set tho.

plastikman, didnt stay too long for his set as we needed to take off, but it was good...but minimal techno is only understood by a select few. i loved it, but others just dont get it. (sometimes slow, not very danceable at time, abstract, but interesting).

not sure if i would go back to coachella next year tho. or at least not camp on the campsite. im not 21 years old anymore, i need a fvcking hotel room.

thats my mini review.

i'm really jealous about orbital. one of the bands that shaped the way i listen to music in high school was pavement though...so i couldn't miss their set. and for what it's worth (this has been my 4th coachella) it ranked in my top 5 chella sets all time. still debating how high. i heard it was a great set from friends that were there.

i'll get back to this with some more proper commentary later

top two sets for me were
#1 orbital
#2 the gossip

i dont listen to bands at all...so i couldnt care less about all the bands...(my music listening spectrum is limited to edm)...but thought the gossip was outta control good.

i used to be way more into indie rock and things of that nature but i've shifted towards edm - still manage to follow the bands i used to like. for me my top sets were probably
1- pavement
2- lcd soundsystem
3- plastikman
4- fever ray
5- dillinger escape plan (i don't really care for the music at all but the energy/show was amazing.

i didn't get to see the gossip - kind of wish i had. this really sweet french girl i met kept telling me how great it was.

w/r/t tiesto - i feel the same way you do about it. i really enjoyed it actually but that was more so because of the scenario than the music. i was with this one girl i'm pretty good friends with and another girl i met through her - feelin' really good i couldn't help but get a bit into it..though at one point i remember telling them 'toooo much vocal cheese' was it do you dream that he closed with? i think. i was really happy about that. didn't like the remix at all though. most of the set i had either of the girls on my shoulders LOL

didn't bother to catch deadmau5 - say first and last 3 tracks jay z did and all of fever ray in between. been disappointed by deadmau5 too many times not really gonna bother anymore.

i really enjoyed plastikman's set. it was just really frustrating seeing him closing the sahara for the festival, banging out an awesome set with great visuals, and looking around just watching the tent empty out. about an hour into his set i noticed that my group of 6 was grooving out in a sea of people either sitting down or a dozen times more messed up than we were. it kind of killed the vibe so we went to see gorillaz. (so so)

i camped this year also - my 2nd year in a row camping. i am 21 years old (lol) but yeah it was kind of rough on me too. if it weren't for all the great people i met i wouldn't really consider it again. it was pretty nice to camp in the tent-only area tho. and the aforementioned french girl: i f'ing love f'ing french girls. wow.

long story short: coachella was one of the happiest weekends of the year for me. always is.

more kush, you need to add one more f'ing...please edit to..."i f'ing love f'ing french girls"

LOLz

as for lcd soundsystem. we saw them too and their set was good for a rock band. BUT the singer was so f'ing bitter. he made several downbeat bitter comments that f'ing annoyed the fuck out of me:
1. opening with making a comment whining about the internet and saying how everyone was downloading his tracks for free (and him not makin anything off of it)
2. during one of his songs where he kinda rants, complains that he doesnt undersand what dj's get paid for cause they dont make their own music (pls note that tiesto was getting top billing on next night)
3. whined serveral times that Jay Z was coming on after him (ie top billing)

i thought he was a f'ing bitter b!tch. what a cry baby, as if he doesnt have enough money in his pocket. he should be grateful that he is able to make music that people want to enjoy.

im just sayin. but for some reason it bothered me. sorry for my whiny rant. ooops, im whining like he did. hahahhah

you know- that's maybe part of james murphy's appeal to a lot of the whole hipster type crowd. he's so incredibly cynical and as my older hipster friend noted to me "i love the new album because....it's where i'm at in my life right now".

as for your number 2 - i think that was during 'losing my edge'. i think the bigger rant he worked into that song was 'you get paid all this money to dj but you can't even carry around records anymore?' and the 'playing other peoples music' deal was just an offshoot.

i couldn't tell if he was whining about jay z being after him or not. didn't think much of it but i could see how that could have been what he was going for.

i think he's a sweet guy though - he's a co-founder of dfa records. i like most things he involves himself in musically.

did you spend a lot of time in the sahara? i kind of thought i would but i ended up bouncing around a whole lot more this year.

ps. i heard that warp 1.9 track several times over the festival...i love the track, reminds me of the one and only dominator song.
