Question genres of trance

is there an OFFICIAL website listing all the sub-genres of trance with some description...

and don't tell me ishkur.com...that place sucks

or is it just highly opinionated you-pick-whatever-suites-you or you-pick-whatever-it-sounds-like type of categorization...

i've heard of so many: uplifting, hard, nrg, progressive, ambient, melodic, epic, anthem, acid, goa/psy, etc, etc,...but what do they all mean???

the reason i started this thread was to get more of a definitive description of sub-genres...

if i just ask the board, i think i will just get a lot of opinions with more discrepancy between people out there.

i don't want to label everything i listen to, and i know that this sort of thing is not that easy because there are only a few songs that are exact molds of their sub-genre.

but for instance, i heard someone use the term "synth-pop" to describe a song...is that trance, or is it too "pop" like that it's no longer considered trance? and is "synth pop" a made up term??? i also heard someone use "morning" trance...i just assume that someone made that term up to label songs that they listen to on the way home after a great night...but is that just another name for ambient or does morning trance really exist??? what about prog-trance...when is it too proggy to become prog-house...

sorry, rambling now...who knows, ok, if anyone can give me all sub-genres of trance that they know with a brief description i would be very thankful

i think "synth pop" is same thing as "euro-dance" ... never heard people use the term "synth pop" but it sounds like they are thinking of "euro-dance"(dj sammy - heaven is what i consider "euro-dance")

tech trance - stuff from max graham and timo mass
uplifting trance - i think this is most popular(ferry,johan..etc.)
progressive - i think most people(producers/dj's)fall under this genre
tiesto,armin.. etc...
well, i dont know how accurate my opinion is.... but these are just that... my opinion. =) hope i help atleast a little bit.

I personally wouldn't consider Tiesto progressive but hey, whatever genre you think it is... meh

Anyways, Somebody posted a link to a site that had a ton of info like detroit techno ect...
It was posted in another thread.

Posted by blazed it on Jul-17-2002 20:45:

that link would be to ishkur's site and he sucks donkey balls

Posted by Ray_Finkle on Jul-17-2002 20:47:

no it wasn't. trust me. Someone brought it up in a thread bashing ishkurs site. They were thorough write ups to.

you obviously didnt read the disclaimer because he says the website is meant to be a joke. so yeah thats why he put rank 1 - airwave as not being trace.

their are so many sub genres of trance and i frankly cannot keep up with them. So i keep it simple.

Posted by WillEastbury on Jul-17-2002 21:59:

Melodic Trance - Slower, more chilled - generally has piano interludes
Hard Trance - Primarily based around fast, dominating 4/4 drum beats
Progressive Trance - Builds slowly, with layers being added as the track progresses
Uplifting Trance - Fairly quick, with BIG BIG room buildups and breakdowns
Tech Trance - Has a little bit of a harder edge, generally a little bit slower than Hard Trance though
Euro Trance - Crappy cheesy pop trance.

Or something like that

Anyway, it's all TRANCE at the end of the day.

things are not so easy, some tracks can be more than one genre i parts of them..well learn to categorize some basic genres and then u can say that this is prog., uplifting etc. but categorizing trance is not such good idea , for all the reasons that ppls before me mentioned

Oh i see. I think the easiest way to put it is the sub-genres of tracks and songs are classified through their elements. Producers can give you a low down on this

Trance:

Melodic/Uplifting - more synthesizer oriented with melodies, catchy melodies or riffs. ex. Robert Miles, Tilt (the old tilt), Paul Oakenfold (the 99 oakey), Minimalistix - Close Cover, Soviener de Chine, Dreamland, Positiva (the label)

Progressive - Not as busy as uplifting trance, based more on the elements of electronic music; however, still contains a trance feel. ex: Max Graham (may be more proghouse), D:Fuse, Christopher Lawerance, Nova B

Hard Trance - well its obviously harder. Sometimes it has more uplifting riffs, sometimes it has cooler bleeps than just trance. ex: SHOKK, Dumonde, Dj Wag

Tech-Trance - a genre classified through the elements of trance and techno. Personally i think this is a really neat genre. ex: Timo Maas

Trance - the obvious

i hope this helps
