Awwww. But I'd so love you in my posse.

The Law -- This one's my favorite trailer. The voice work + lipsync + music = brilliance.

I have no doubts. They did the same thing with GTA 4

GTA in the old west. You can't lose.

The game looks awesome and I have a lot of hope for it, but I'm approaching with caution thanks to an in-house developer interview a few months back that claimed many parts of the game were downright broken and still needed a lot of work. Here's the article (keep in mind, this was published back in January...a lot can happen in 4 months)..

quote:
When we recently spoke with our trusted sources from Rockstar San Diego, in addition to yesterday's information regarding the Midnight Club franchise, we were also told about the allegedly troubled state of Red Dead Redemption. One source said that the game "was a complete disaster for most of 2009 and previous ... it has since turned around a little bit, but there are huge problems with it still." Unsurprisingly, the issues with the game are repeatedly claimed to be the result of mismanagement -- along the same lines as what was mentioned in the recent "Rockstar spouse" letter.

"Red Dead [Redemption] has been in production for six years (mainly because of horrible management/lack of direction due to fear of disrespecting Rockstar NY) and it will never get the money back in sales it cost to create for those six years," claimed another source.

We asked Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter to estimate how many copies he thinks Red Dead Redemption needs to sell to make back its development costs and, more importantly for Take-Two, to be profitable. "I'd say realistically, if everybody [at Rockstar San Diego] was working on it this whole time -- so let's assume it's four years to be fair [Red Dead Revolver was released in March 2004], that's $40 million (about $10 million a year to run the studio) -- to make that back and just break even you need at least $80 million in sales; 1.75 million units. For profit: $160 million/3.5 million units."

Pachter added that "it's got a shot" and that, from what he's seen of the game, "it looks phenomenal." Our sources are less hopeful, unfortunately: "The functional team that was Midnight Club was shattered. All the people who didn't quit or get fired were thrown onto Red Dead Redemption, many of them being demoted. The completely disfunctional team that is RDR was put to top priority. The people who had floundered on that project or outright screwed it up were promoted and are now in complete control of the studio, and they're running it into the ground." We'll have to see when the game arrives in stores this April -- if it does.

We contacted Rockstar for comment on this story and have yet to hear back as of publishing.

Update: We were contacted regarding this story by one Rockstar source, who told us: "It will take 4 million sales at full price to recoup the development costs of Red Dead. The good news is they [Rockstar] are not expecting to make money with Red Dead Redemption. At this point, that project is just supposed to prove that the San Diego studio can make a great quality AAA title." If you'd like to contact us regarding this or other stories surrounding the "Rockstar spouse" letter, we'd love to hear from you.

(scroll down a bit to see the article tidbit)

I dont understand the "break-even/profit" disparity. It says 1.75 million copies need to be sold to break even...but 3.5 million units to make a profit. I'm no economist, but what the hell is up with that gap between the numbers? If it sold 2 million, it still wouldn't make a profit? Why not?

All of this being said, I really hope the game shines, because the concept is absolutely awesome. Regardless of developer trouble, I think R* has what it takes to make things right. I'll keep my hopes up.

Let me be the first to happily say to everyone, ignore my post. The game currently has a 95 on metacritic...seems they cleaned up the game's problems extremely well. Good stuff.

So far so good, love me some westerns so I might be biased, but I can tell im gonna like this game more then GTA series.

Posted by KiNeTiC ENeRgY on Jun-02-2010 18:47:

Much better than the gta series, imo. The bounty quests get repetitive, but the main story is damn good.

With all the prostitutes in the game and u can't even bang one of them. Sorry ma'am I'm married, lol. Fuck that I want a bang a whore

I really hope this makes it to PC. Rockstar had a bitch of time getting the engine (RAGE?) to PC, and when GTAIV was launched, it was an absolute mess. I think Steam was even giving refunds temporarily due to outright non-functionality. It's been a long ride, but GTAIV works great for me now. It usually takes 6 months for a Rockstar PC port, so I await an E3 announcement

Games are insane expensive to develop I think GTAIV cost $40 million to make, and another $50 million went into massive licensing programs for all the attached. And then Take Two put another X million to advertising ($20m?)
That must have been some serious mismanagement to bump that price to $80million.

got a playstation 3 with this game, fuckin love it!! that may be due in part to having never played a 'sandbox' style game before but it's damn fun either way

lol...I'm PC all the way, but let's face it...the titles just aren't there for us. My new machine can play anything out full on, but lack of good games is pissing me off that I have to play the consoles. At least for now. I'm waiting on The Old Republic which will be my game for a looooong time.

Yeah, tell me about it for all intents and purposes, PC gaming is dead (excluding strategy and MMO). Its a real shame, but that will teach all the elitists that stealing games is bad for the platform.

haha. I havent played any supcom for a number of months now, been playing lots of RPGs and some coop with a mate. And by RPGs, I mean real RPGs, not these weirdo jap movies.

I cant believe though you spent all that money on a PS3 when your PC is so old especially now you have a real job!

well i decided 800 for the ps3 with some games and the extra controller was a better spend. i have a 2 weeks on, 1 week off roster and sometimes im out in the middle of queensland or whatever for those 2 weeks and since i seem to be splitting my weeks off between melbourne and newcastle, i couldn't really justify the spend. yet. maybe if i get a good tax return? i've gotta try saving for a house or something too you know, maybe a car as well. this real world shit is stuffing me around

dont let your real world rationalisations get in the way of my disappointment!

How do you figure? I was about to buy an XBOX or PS because they are dirt cheap, then I realised that the consoles games I can't get on PC I can count on two hands, possibly one. The vast majority of blockbusters are released on PC.

im less worried about the titles that dont make it to PC, than i am about the quality of the titles that do. im so sick of menus and controls that were obviously designed with a controller in mind. other than graphics & scaling options, i cant tell the difference between the two formats any more, across virtually any multi-platform title ive played (not you divinity 2; PC title all the way you sweet piece of goodness).

oh, and im also sick of FPS titles that lock the viewing angle at 60 degrees. personally i cant wait for the next generation of consoles because i want them with more grunt.
