HELP: what speakers should I buy?

Hey, I'm moving back to school soon, and I've been saving my money up for a while to buy some sweet speakers/receiver. I've got a good amount of $$ saved...so what kind should I look into getting? I would like to get 2 floor speakers w/ enough power so that I don't need to get a sub to go with them. Right now I was leaning towards Polk...but I was hoping someone could lead me in the right direction. Thanks

these are the best speakers at the best value you will ever find in your life.

on sale now for $200 CND at radioshack. .. i know, its radioshack, but surprisingly these speakers are actually VERY GOOD. Merak is an amazing canadian speaker company.

and they're big speakers. 27 pounds each

all of you are wrong with speakers... you want qaulity, clear sound, precise accurancy and no amp needed ! i can only tell you 1 pair of speakers ! they will cost you though but if you're looking for qaulity i suggest you get these.

this speakers will cost you about $1300 for a pair. there studio moniters but they're amazing i have tested them out and i couldn't be more pleased. so thats why im saving up to get a pair... even the big boys use these i can't remember who but i know ARMIN owns a pair in his studio. theres a built in amp within the speakers.

I don't know if you spin or not, but the best speakers I have heard as far as power and clarity(this is of course excluding really really high end stuff)are the powered Mackie 15" pro PA speakers. I spun at a party where the guy only had 1 hooked up and it was ridiculous. We didn't even need a monitor. I think they are about 6-700 each but don't quote me on that. They are definitely loud enough to get you multiple noise violations from the cops.

hey man,

i can't tell from your post, so i'm not sure if you're looking for sound quality or lots of boom. if you're after SQ, then definitely check out paradigm. their "monitor" line should be within your budget; price ranges from $350-$1200. if you have enough cash then take a look at paradigm's "reference studio" series; price ranges from $750-$3000. in case you don't know the paradigm brand is highly acclaimed among budget audiophiles for their bang for the buck, and are often compared to more expensive brands such as b&w.

you may also want to check out a speaker called "rockets" by Onix, which is the successor to the "diva" by swan. these are only available on the net and have gotten GREAT reviews. (http://www.av123.com/) other brands that produce decent entry level speakers are polk, energy, and mission, but i'm not as familiar with their models.

on the other hand, if your after loudness, then just goto your local best buy or whatever and listen to as many speakers as you can and buy the one with the biggest slam.

i know you didn't want to go this route, but my recommendation is to get two bookshelf speakers (they are just as good as towers when it comes to mid-range and high frequency response) and add a good sub. this method could be cheaper than getting towers, provides much better/lower/louder bass, and some say it sounds better than most towers (under $20k).

i assume you wanted a 2 channel music system and not a home theater system. if this is correct, i would not recommend getting a receiver. receivers sound bad and are WAY underpowered. you'll often see "100watts x 6 channels" and think "wow, 600watts on this baby!" that's not true, the marketers often twist the power ratings to make it look good. i won't get into the reasons, but with entry level receivers the power is typically half of what is says on the box. so "100 watts x 6 channels" actually gets you 40-50watts per channel in stereo mode, and even less with all channels driven (for dvds, etc).

the best bang for the buck can be gotten from an integrated amplifier, which do not have twisted power specs or a really cheap receiver combined with a separate amplifier.

g'luck with your purchase.

Thanks for you help so far guys...but I still have some questions, for acustik especially.

I have been looking around on www.audioreview.com and some stores to check out prices. I think the best thing for me, being that it will be set up in a small dorm room, would be to go with 2 bookshelf speakers and a sub. I would like to use this to run music from my computer (mainly), cd player, radio, and TV. What else would go best with this setup??

Should I buy a 2 channel receiver and use that to control it? Or like acustik was saying...an integrated amplifer. I'm unfamiliar with how that works, and they seem to be quite expensive. If I buy a receiver, should I also run an amp to give the speakers more power? I'm open to any suggestions at this point.

My budget is around $1000 maybe a little more if it's worth it.

Thanks!

mission speakers are a definate choice

most models come with subs built in. some even with dual sub and they are superb quality

'sup,

good choice. the bookshelf/sub combo will definitely bring your trance music to a whole new level.

given all the info, you shoud go with a decent receiver for two reasons. first, in order to use the sub, you need something with a "subwoofer preout." these are only found on receivers and not integrated amps. second, with bookshelf speakers, you will not need as much amplification. this is because bass requires ALOT of power, but since your sub, with it's own amp, will be taking care of the bass, the workload on the bookshelves is lighter (mid/hi frequencies, which require less power). take into account the setup will be in a small dorm room, a decent receiver will have more than enough power.

what is a decent receiver? well, off the top of my head, alot of the ones available at the mass market shops, like pioneer, most sony's, and technics are considered cheap/low-end and often twist their power specs the most. some brands that make decent mid/hi-end receivers are denon, marantz, and yamaha. the amps in these receivers are far better than those in the cheapies.

fyi, here is my understanding of amps (don't shoot me if i'm wrong): an amp is, well, an amp. an integrated amp is just an amplifier with a volume control built in. a receiver is an integrated amp with a radio tuner built in. you'll have to double check the prices, but in the end i think you're best to go with a surround receiver from one of the mid/hi-end brands above.

to start, take a look at paradigm mini-monitors ($350), hsu vtf-2 powered sub ($450), marantz sr-4200 ($350).

you'll have to get stands (or improvise) for the bookshelf speakers. contrary to the name, they should NOT be placed on a bookshelf or close to walls. 2-3 feet away is the ideal minimum, but not always possible or neccessary, depending on the room and your ears. other than that you might as well add a dvd player to your setup. they're pretty affordable now and most offer MP3 playback. not to mention they play dvds...

all that said, you'll have to get out there and see what's best for your needs and your budget. take what i have said only as a guide to start your search.

tranceaddict, while a great site, probably isn't the best place to be asking your question. if you haven't already done so, you should ask for some advice in audiophile/home theater forums:

http://www.avsforum.com/
http://www.hometheaterforum.com/
http://www.audioasylum.com/
http://www.hometheaterspot.com/
and the discussion area at audioreview.com.

or try newsgroups:

rec.audio.opinion
rec.audio.high-end
alt.home-theater.misc

there are some really helpful people that'll give you alot more info and suggest other brands and models that i'm not familiar with.

I'd also add Monitor Audio to your list of loudspeakers to check out both floorstanding and bookshelf

the avsforum is fantastic and the guys there REALLY know their stuff.

however having read all of the posts above I didn't see the one bit of advice that I know will help you make a decision (apologies if some1 said this earlier). and that is to audition as many brands and combinations with amps/receivers/integrated amps/diff cable etc and go with what sounds the best FOR YOU and your budget.

the other bit of advice I have found priceless is the quality of service that you get. the store I go to now I would never leave and go elsewhere because the service is ALWAYS the best. believe it or not I was in one store listening to some Klipsch reference speakers and the guy said to me that because I was not going to buy something there and then that he was not prepared to spend anymore time with me. that's no shit !!

it really doesn't matter how much money you have to spend as there never seems 2 b enough once you are bitten by the audiophile bug !!

best of luck and let us know what you and your ears decide.

cheers
BJeT
