Arthur C. Clarke Is Dead

Since my previous few mixes here have been quite straight forward, I decided to do something quite different this time. I've always liked futuristic-sounding music, something electro (the kind NOT involving fart basslines) is particularly good at when done just right. Unfortunately, I find it difficult to sound futuristic when you're constantly having throwbacks to electro in the 80s, be it yet another sample of Planet Rock, more party/robot takeover vocoder vocals, turntablism etc. etc.

So, this mix will be my attempt to display electro that is looking forward and show off the quite interesting grey area between electro and drum n bass, which isn't explored nearly often enough for my tastes. It also gets quite hectic and fast towards the end, so if you don't like that kind of thing, you are hereby warned.

And yes, there's more music from Dopplereffekt/Der Zyklus/Drexciya/Arpanet in here. There will always be music from Dopplereffekt/Der Zyklus/Drexciya/Arpanet in any set from me that involves electro, so there.

Gracias as always, Ms. Echo.

Don't know of hardly anything on here, which is always a good thing. Snaggin.

Another wickedly crafted mix here my man. A few of the darker/dirtier tracks were a tad harsh for my ears, but that's only a preference in taste. Construction and flow were top shelf once again. The last 25 mins are sublime. Great work once again.

Downloading now. Very cool theme. I am a huge 2001 fan and just actually watched 2010 this week. (Not as bad as I thought It could've been).

Anyway, looking forward to some spacey shizz

Awesome mix! Solid mixing and great buildup. I liked that it went totally bonkers about 3/4 into it. Been ages since I've listened to anything like this. Enjoyed it!

Posted by Lews on May-12-2010 19:23:

I don't recognize a single there here and have no idea what I'm getting myself into, but definitely downloading

Paul Blackford should thank you, Jan Henrik, for presenting so many of the Militant Science tracks in such a favorable light. He actually put together a mix using only Militant Science tracks. I should find it and give it a listen. Anyway, yes, this mix is fantastic.

Pure madness. It starts out so sweet and gently, teasing, tinkling and then oh so slowly it builds and builds; before we really understand what's happening, the music is driving us pushing us pounding us beating us relentlessly into a wild frenzy.

Very nice..fun stuff.

Thank you.

mind-fucking music.

This set was fucking magical, dude, I had no idea I was about to be assaulted and obliterated by all these different styles. The first half I felt like a hipster with a nice gray scarf and a cappuccino, the next moment I felt like Technoviking about ready to curb-stomp some bitches, and then at the end I felt like a candy raver that had overdosed in the parking lot and was floating in some clouds and rainbows and shit. I've never experienced a set like that. Impressive stuff.

Posted by enydo on May-15-2010 04:55:

Oh wow, now this was an absolute treat. Incredible build up through the entire set, fantastic tracks, and some very smooth mixing. This has definitely sparked my interest in this type of music, and I'm sure I'll be digging around the various artists and whatnot to find more of it. Just a really great set, you just put out quality set after quality set. It'll be on repeat for quite some time, thanks for sharing.

Pretty fucking awesome this, real progression and purpose. Im fairly sure that if I listened to the mental tracks in the last third on their own I would not approve but as part of this set I couldnt get enough! Top work

Posted by Burn Notice on May-15-2010 21:10:

You continue to make some of the best mixes on this forum. This set was mental. Now THAT'S a fucking build. Great job.

It was actually Mossman's mix for Spannered that inspired me to do this mix in the first place, even though the second half of it is a bit dull.

Well, that's what a good DJ should be doing in my opinion: setting up tracks in the appropriate context, no matter how fast or "extreme" they might be.

Cheers for listening everyone, it's good to see that you're all liking something that's quite different from the mixes I normally post here.

Posted by Lews on May-18-2010 03:29:

Definitely will be saving this one for a long time. Fucking amazing.

Had no idea what to expect going in, but this is just incredible.

Fantastic set, as always

Finally had chance to listen to this all the way through. All the summery weather hasn't fit an electro mix. I have to say the massive praise in this thread gave me expectations the mix itself didn't quite match. I really liked the first 45 minutes and the final 15 or so, but there were points between (especially around the hour mark) that I found pretty boring and uninteresting, despite the mayhem going on. Despite that, I'd definitely say you succeeded in providing a fresh spin on a well-worn genre.
