I know nothing about amps....do you???
OK, so here's the deal. I live in an apartment complex, and there are times when I can shake the room if need be, but for the most part I don't have the need for the full power these things (JBL monitors) can put out.
SO, is there an amp that you can suggest I buy? I don't have a home stereo center (I rely on my computer for mp3's, etc). I am looking for something cheap. I don't need any "save up to buy the (insert newest, best amp here)" responses. SOmething cheap that will give plenty of power to my speakers if need be. I know absolutely NOTHING about amps, so anything would be appreciated. Thanks
P.S. Remeber, the key word here is affordable Maybe $200-250 ????
here's a couple to check out, at that price range:

I went to www.123dj.com (I know they haven't gotten the best track record ever, but still) and you have to "e-mail them for the super-low price they can't put on their site" and the same amp is $229. I might just go ahead and get it. The speakers will be ariving anyday, so it would be nice to have this shit set up ASAP. |

DJ Chrono - Thanks for the input on that Kenwood amp, but I don't really need 400 watts. Thanks though, seriouslly. 300, at the max, is all I'm gonna need. That's why I think I'll go with the Crown. I might get on www.ebay.com to see if I can get a better price than the $229 I got on 123dj.com |

I'll do that Meridian, and I am going to look into getting the Crown from DJTronix now. Wow, this just gets better and better. I'm going to call 123dj.com and see what they say about the shipping
btw I dont know a lot about amps either and as I want to buy one as well, I have to get one that matches my speakers impedance, but how do I know what my speakers impedance is? I have no idea so is there any way of telling?
yes it should say something like 2, 4 or 8 ohms (might be a lill ohm sign instead of the word) on the back of the speaker..it's usually placed close to where the jacks are on it.
?????
please elaborate..
I know about the simbol, etc.. what happens when they dont match?
I thought u could adjust amp to go 1, 2, 4, 8, etc..

| Originally posted by MERiDiAN5i2 http://www.djtronix.com/crownxls202.html ok.. i know the price there is $249, but the shipping is no charge - im sure the amp is kinda heavy... so if 123dj.com wants more than $20 to ship it, you'd do better at djtronix.com - i purchased a mixer from these guys and they had to back order it (the RM3S when it just came out) and they sent it to me 2nd day air at no charge (yup.. totally free) because of the wait from stanton. so i had a good experience with them... good luck.. and let us know how ya like the XLS202 ![]() -mer |

I found the Crown amp at www.123dj.com for $229 (it's "Blowout week" or whatever), so I called Music Center Inc's phone number and told them to beat that price, and he offered it to me for freaking $219.00. Not only that, but they are having a special where any order over $150 is free shipping through UPS. I'm telling you guys, you can't beat it with a stick. Go get 'em!!!! |
The Story about the Ohms
Ohm is the value for the resistance of a speaker. You don't adjust your amp for it, if the resistance is lower your amp puts more power into your speakers. Compare it with cycling on an mountain: If you're cycling to the top, the resistance is quite high, so your speed will be low. If you're cycling downhill, the resistance is lower, so you will have a quite high speed. Your amps owners manual will show you the minimal resistance a speaker (or more speakers wired up parallel) needs to have. Your amps power supply can only deliver a certain amount of power, so if you have a really low resistance you could f*ck up your amp. The most amps can handle a 2 to 4 ohm load as minimum (the more expensive your amp, the lower minimum load). The JBL speaker would probobly have a resistance of 4 or 8 ohm, so you can wire them up to almost every amp. But be carefully when you use more speakers parallel, the total resistance will drop (see your physics for that). One 8 ohm speaker has a total resistance of 8 ohm (amazing!!!), two 8 ohm speakers have a total resistance of 4 ohm, and four 8 ohm speakers have a total resistance of 2 ohm.
If you need to know more, ask me, but it may take some time before i respond.... I am at Crete for the next 15 days
