WIP - going nowhere at the moment!

I usually bin stuff like this when it's going nowhere but there's an energy in this one that I quite like so i'll see where a few suggestions or people ripping into it take me

None of the drums, levels or transition stuff is final, it's just a sketch really.

Sounds like a solid foundation when everything comes together.

The next thing I'd work on would probably be the drums. You say you like the energy right now, but I think you'd like it even more with more driving percussion.

Personally, I'd give the bassline and pad a bit more flavour, and perhaps give the pad more volume. I like your other synths!

Hard to say much more with such a short sample. Post up an updated version if you continue and I'll hopefully be of more help.

Check your SC for my comment G. - I can't ever wait for your next track man, add some vocal (you have pure gold vocal at home already) and this would/could be crazy good track from you again

Cheers

I think you're spot on about the percs and pads and you're not the first person to mention that.I've gone through about 6-7 pad sounds now as well, the ear fatigue sets in really fast for subtle but important sounds like that, or for me it does anyway! The bassline is also not there yet i'd agree. I'm messing around with that growling subby bassline these days and it's really hard to get the EQ spot on and it sitting just so. Onwards!!

Thanks D!

I was thinking about some spot vocals for this one and I may do at a later date. I've got a mic and interface coming in a few weeks so i'm holding off recording anything until then.

Thanks for listening as usual!

The bass and also that plucky at about 30 secs are ace and the track has great energy. I imagine a bit of a spot vocal by your missus - do something quirky though, not straight classic sirens o the sea stuff

Ok, the drums; The kick is bad brother. Way to much mid and muffle. You need one with a lot less mid freq info to allow the rest of the track som,e room - and I mean big scoop out. Then make more driving hats and percs and vary them over say 8 bars.

The snare also sounds very muffled - maybe get summit a little more techy.

Pads - sound okay to me.

I dont think that bass needs much if any tweak tbh.

Nice work.

You're right about the kick, that's currently in 'ballpark mode' and was the closest match to what I wanted pre-EQ etc. The snare's already been adressed but i'm still not 100% happy with it. I've got an inserted reverb with a beat matched predelay on it thats still not sitting 100% right but it's been boosted at about 500-1000hz to give it that thwack.

That 30 second part is exactly why I hadn't already binned this one, I just couldn't hit the delete button.....goes against my own advice of 'if it ain't workin.....bin it!'

I'm torn on the vocals now. If I wait until I get my new gear i'm pretty sure the track will be complete or near complete and the vocals just won't get added, and if I use my current setup I may not do them justice. Hmmmmmmm. If I do put some in i've already decided they'll be in a similar style to the ones in Pattersons 'Always'. In fact that's kind of where this track is headed already.

Cheers

Mildly updated in response to critique.

The initial part before the tiny break has been changed slightly to include some verse vocals at a later date.

Really picks up at 1 min mark, the bass is far too quiet tho, and the kickdrum has too much lowend. Plucks sound great tho!

I think there might be an odd interaction between the basslines and kick that i've not picked up on yet. I may be at the limitations of my monitoring setup however so it may need a rethink.

Maybe I should just use my usual method and smother it with moar noise

This has a lot of potential. The string seems a little high and could come down an octave. Keep at it. Looking forward to another finished product.

That string will be much reduced in the final mix as it's really there to provide a separate topend to the pad sounds, a bit of definition if you will!

I've re-arranged it a bit and got some ideas for vocal melodies in it, I'm quite liking where it's going now tbh

interesting track

the deharmonized notes are a drawback that adds character.

good stuff though.

I keep going round in circles I think

Kick has too much lowend still lol, plucks sound great, pad/strings could use more mids, love the bassline tho!

FFS!!!

You know I usually throw stuff together and spend maybe an hour on a mixdown.

Serves me right for trying to do it properly.

I'm gonna just record the vocals, do the intro/outro, pull all the faders down and mix it fast

Posted by Owsey on Jun-09-2010 15:24:

People seem to be talking a lot about your mixdown. Unfortunately, I can't comment on it because I have a case of temporary tinnitus. However, here are my thoughts on the music:

As I said before, the plucks are great. I think another trancey pluck playing behind the main at a lower volume could work well, especially if it were being filtered in and out.

The pad seems to sound a lot nicer this time around. Personally, it wouldn't quench my general thirst for pads, but it works well in this context.

The drums aren't bad, but brining the "hits" out a little more probably couldn't hurt. Some more delay wouldn't go a miss, either.

I would work on building the track a character from here. Have you tried a Piano or something to help it stand out a little more?

Well done overall, chap.

Cheers matey.

I've a sneaking suspicion that there's something amiss with the drums and percussion all round. I can't quite put my finger on it and i've probably gone a bit deaf to it now. I may well look into that layering idea (although the current lead is already a layer of two sounds) but sometimes it really does work. Pianos too for that matter.

I'm loathe to add any more 'stuff' until the vocals are in (and that's why the pad has taken a back seat too) but i'm pretty sure the drums will be started over.

Thanks again buddy

I guess I don't have to respond here on your track - you know what I think about it - spending most of my time on SoundCloud right now and left my comments over there on your track.

Sweet effort G, well done.

Cheers

Cheers Darek

It's about time we heard something new from you I think!

Posted by TranceLover007 on Jun-09-2010 18:34:

Yeah, it all about pressure man lol.

You are right G, it is not going to take long before I will crank out some tracks again.

Damn it, I start to feeling this/some pressure again lol.

Cheers
