Review: DEMF 2010

Review posts should go in here. Just finished waking up from a 13 hour deep sleep. Can't remember feeling this tired from my 3 DEMFS prior. But wow.... Review will follow at some point.

I can't even begin to review! I'm still exhausted! Slept 1pm Tuesday when I got back to Windsor till just now about an hour ago (10am Wednesday)...

Every piece of me hurts, from my feat to my head, from my skin to the depths of my soul!

I'm gonna try to remember it all lol, next year maybe need to take notes along the way!

I'm really kinda pissed about my videos... I took some epic videos, and the quality/clairty of the video (seemed) amazing when I put them on my computer, HD and all that... but it must have been WAY louder than I thought it was because my camera kept cutting/clipping out the audio

Didn't take nowhere as many pictures as I usually do...

I feel pretty fantastic Just in serious DEMF withdrawls. Will work on my review throughout the day. My brain cant focus on work.

I am at work and I only had a chance to snatch about 10 hours of sleep last night. I am not going to say how little I slept this past week... review to come maybe Friday.

Still so exhausted FML

1) Plastikman Sucked Hard. Richie should keep to being Richie.
2) Didnt Seem as packed as last year which was not a bad thing
3) Drumcode Party got shot up
4) Seth Troxler alwasy rocks. Infact blue collar was like the only party that didnt get shut down.
5) Detroit needs more weed!!!!!
6) all in all great times because of the people but no special
highlights like years past...Maybe Barem..who was great.
7) Liebing Tore it up at the End..you can always count on Crhis.

I read this year had an extra 15,000 people attend. 95,000 in total. Crazy because it never felt that packed.

Definitely the highlight of my trip.

My expectations were high for this year as last year was ridiculous on so many levels. My expectations were def not met. But as we all know, going into a party with expectations, 9 times out of 10 leads to disappointment.

There was nothing surprising about the music. My favorite set was Josh Wink and Martin Buttrich at the Festival. Mind you I didn't stay on the Monday which I can guarantee would have transformed my opinion of the entire festival.

Old Miami definitely didn't compare to last year in antics, vibe and music. I don't even know who was playing for the duration I was there. There were a lot of quality DJ's there partying, just not playing. Could have used another Troxler set. Yummm!!!!


Oh how I craved a pool!!!!!

Other brief moments of awesomeness that I remember now and looking through videos...

1) Mushrooms in a hotel room = Bad (awesome) idea...
2) Best part of the festival is finding new music, didn't know who Pretty Lights were but glad I do now! So much fun!
3) SMD was AWESOME! That Redbull tent was insane!
4) Booka Shade played later than any other tent which is weird, but great!
5) Anyone know that sweet "horny" song that Sneak played on the boat with male vocal going "My affection" - that was retarded!

Wish I had the engery to close down the Detek party... was dieing and had to go back to the hotel...

Was gutted to miss Old Miami, but kinda glad I did because it gave me some energy to finish off the festival on Monday night!

Said it in the other thread, say it again here, was great to finally meet many of the TOTA crew, to many to name you all, but you all know who you were!

I HAVE to get this Claude Von Stroke video sorted out... soo much BASS!

From another board, our weekend in a nutshell:

Over and above all, Rob Hood destroyed the Made In Detroit stage. The man produces incredible swing out of such simple percussion, people were jacking up a storm in that pit. Easily the highlight of the weekend for me.

Backtracking, we started off Saturday with a fantastic dinner at Angelina Bistro (thanks for the head-up on that, Chaska!) and then entered the fest to Woody McBride banging it out on the main stage - he was having a blast rocking an all-wax set and segued into some sweet, crackly, oldschool acid techno toward the end. His sound really should have been booked in for a later timeslot, but such is...

Theo Parrish brought the deep to the MiD stage, teasing the bass perfectly and bringing out the souled-out heads. The Plastikman spectacle was just that, a nice little bit of nostalgia, entertaining visually and fun to watch a new generation of raver kiddies experiencing something they missed the first, second or tenth time around. The giant LED curtain also helped to diminish the Richie worship - you could tell much of the energy (cellphone brigade aside) was actually focused on the music.

A sunny Sunday aft and the Ghetto Tech boys were hella fun - the jittin' was surprisingly absent, but a small circle opened up near where we were dancing and we had a blast watching some slick moves. Really surprised to find out that Brian (Godfather) still remembered me, even though it was over a decade ago when we booked him to play in T.O. Standup guy and seems to get faster and more precise with his mixing every time I hear him.

The missus and I decided to take an old folks nap on Saturday aft, so we missed Shake, Larry Heard and Orlando Voorn but made it back in time to hear Carter lay a decent Chicago beatdown - nothing special, but at least he's consistent. Inner City closed the main stage off quite nicely, you could see this was the act that a lot of oldschool Detroit people came out to see. Highlight was their covering Octave One's "Blackwater" with Ann Saunderson on vocals (she'd been singing backup to Paris Gray up until that point).

We'd bought advance tix for the Metroplex 25th anniversary party, and while the soundsystems were outstanding (honestly, why don't any clubs in Toronto sound like this anymore?) and the vibe in the main room was solid as a rock, overall this party was a huge, tiring letdown, to the point where we've asked the promoter for a partial refund. First off, the door staff were holding people in line for over an hour - big surprise when we finally got in around 2:40 a.m. to find the venue wasn't anywhere near capacity. Top that off with Ben Sims (the main reason we decided to hit up this gig) being a no-show, with unconfirmed rumours that he was left stranded at the Detroit Metro Airport. He posted a couple of pretty p.o.'d messages on his Facebook page, must have been an incredibly frustrating experience on his end.

After checking out of our hotel on Monday we tripped up to Hamtramck, stumbled upon a great little Middle Eastern resto for brunch and then went and did some bin digging/clothes shopping at Detroit Threads. Came back downtown, parked the car (Memorial Day = no tagging!) and started off the day with Sean Deason. The guy may run a seminal Detroit label, but from what little we heard, can't mix for shit. Then headed over to the Redbull stage and were pleasantly surprised by Francesco Tristiano. Young guy, very humble and focused approached to his music, you can tell he has a deep appreciation for his own talent and his set was a real treat. The Moritz Von Oswald Trio brought on Carl Craig as their special guest, playing a beautifully dubbed out set that fit the heavy mid-afternoon climate perfectly. Spent a little bit of time catching up with Stephane Vera, who was shooting vid for a lot of the fest, and also had the pleasure of running into former T.O. promoter Bev May, another person who I haven't crossed paths with in over 10 years. Seems like she's doing quite well, now living in New York and working in IT - decided to not ask her when she's finally going to get around to publishing Future Jazz.

Next up was Punisher back at the MiD stage - I've loved what Michelle does ever since she first came to T.O. as a teenager for the Phryl parties in the late 90s, and her Movement set was no exception. She's an amazing storyteller and is as great a musical representative of the Motor City as any of the older gen crew.

By the end of her set, the rain began to set in. We were hoping for brief thundershowers, but after an hour and a half of steady downpour, we decided to preserve what little energy we had left for the drive home. Would have loved to have caught Stacey Pullen and Kenny Larkin's live PA, but I'm glad we booked it when we did.

Had an absolute blast with our travelling companions, who were supposed to have been booked in with us at the Inn on Ferry Street, but ended up being upgraded to the all-suite Antheneum, when the Inn oversold their rooms. Since they were within walking distance of the fest, we often just grabbed the free shuttle from our place to theirs and had a perfect rest stop for snacks and drinks between the various goings-on.

Also, thumbs up to Byblos Cafe for providing a healthy alternative (fresh raw carrot and apple juice whut!) to the standard concession crap and thumbs down to the nauseating number of smokers in the underground area.

Overall, a very worthwhile weekend and great inspirational fuel for our upcoming Toronto ventures!

Not sure about if anyone got hurt. I heard it happened outside the club. All parties in the area were shut down. Really sucked for the centre st people - that party was just getting started.

Ricardo was taken off the line up do to visa issues. He was at the festival - saw him walking around. Guess he couldnt get a work permit. Hawtin replaced him. Someone told him Ricardo played an after party, not sure if that was true. Was a bit sad to miss out on seeing him but didn't really let it affect my DEMF.

Should add that we had a laugh and a half the few times we decided to peek in on the Beatport stage. Truly appears that the new hallmark of a DJ's popularity is to see how many attention-whoring hangers on you can pack into the booth during your set.

The person everyone thought was Ricardo was Adrien de Maublanc of Masomenos who played at Old Miami. He looks exactly like Ricardo unless you see him up close.

Oh yea, this must be part of your continuing campaign to bash the more popular flavours of techno in order to give the illusion that your elitist, techno-purist preferences are more important. Why can't you just enjoy the type of music you like, and stfu about this already?

Did you and your girlfriend really go to the Beatport stage just to laugh at how other people party?

Please tell me, what if anything do a bunch of fist-pumping booth bunnies have to do with what you perceive to be "the more popular flavours of Techno" (<---speaking of elitist preferences)? Does one automatically accompany the other? Does crowding the booth with people who clearly just want a piece of the onstage action somehow make the music sound better?

And double lol @ the "Techno purist" comment - I'd say that moniker is considerably more reflective of the "oh that track was so five seconds ago" Berlimnml contingent that worships the Beatport Top 10 like its the second coming than it is of my personal tastes, which span some 30+ years of electronic music.

This thread is for picks and pans and I've given both. Don't like?

Wow Adrien from Masomenos looks so much like Villalobos.. He even conducts himself in a very similar manner. I seriously thought it was him.. until I read Highroller's post.


Did anyone get to see Booka Shade or Magda? How were they? My friends and I ended up heading back to Toronto because of the shitty weather.


A brief review of some of the sets that I saw.. starting from my favourite:

1. Claude Vonstroke: What a versatile dj.. never heard anybody throw such a wide array of big-room funky tunes at his audience so consistently. So many different tempos, sounds, moods.. IMO, out of all the djs I saw at the BP stage, he probably made the best use of the speakers. On top of that, he maintained a very positive vibe throughout his whole set.. whenever his set would get darker and more serious.. he'd bring in a sample / track that would put a smile on your face again. He's pretty much the dj I wanted to see the most.. and he delivered.

2. Plastikman: Never heard a set like this before.. Very minimal techno with a touch of breakbeats and acid synths. He would stretch every sample he used to unimaginable extremes. Some people didn't enjoy the fact that the set wasn't continuous.. but I loved it.. at times, the set would pause for a few seconds and continue into a new chapter.. very theatrical. Didn't get to see much of the light show.. but what I did see looked awesome.

3. Richie Hawtin: Proper techno with a little hint of house at times. He kept in dropping these darker retro /electro sounding minimal tracks, which got me going nuts.

4. Jamie Jones: Slow deep sleazy sounding disco tech-house. Very solid set. Never imagined myself dancing so much to a down-tempo set.

5. Rex Sepulveda: Beautiful orchestral progressive house and techno.. flawless mixing. I've never heard of him before I saw him at DEMF.. he's very skilled.
