00.db - Melatron....what genre is this song?

I picked up the Mindwave remix of this song last night and it's awesome:

But what genre of EDM is this? Beatport has it labeled trance but it doesn't sound like it. It sounds a lot darker and has some ambient/atmospheric elements thrown in there.

What other songs sound like this?

Live mix is the best imo. It's Trance

Is it really just plain trance?

I feel like trance is just a blanket term for anything that doesn't fit in the confines of another genre.

Like this song is clearly different than stuff like Solarstone's "7 Cities" and Rank 1's "Airwave", and those two songs are considered trance.

According to the record label which I received the promo from (Bonzai) it is labelled as just Trance but if you want to get technical it's Psy-Trance imo.

Coincidentally I just posted a link to this track on facebook last nite

J00F plays both Psytrance and Trance so this is should be a mixture

Trance as a genre is over 20 years old now and it's evolved a long way in many directions. Just look at the huge variety of music that gets labelled "house" in one form or another.

With that said electronic music really needs to come up with some new genre terms rather than just mutating the same ones so they apply to bafflingly large selections of music. Electro, deep house, tech house, progressive and, yeah, trance are today used to describe very different music than they originally did. It's confusing to people like yourself and it's just lazy.

By the way, I can see your tastes gradually improving. Within a few years you'll be safely past Aly & Fila and will be completely contradicting your early posts. Just like DOOMBOT.

What are you talking about? Psytrance can be more psychedelic or more trancey, depending on the producer. 00.db and J00F both encompass a realm of deeper, darker trance with hints of psychedelia. You can have both, they aren't completely separate.

Read it again and think harder.

I'd call that dark uplifting Trance. But j00f/00.db are probably like the only guys who do that kinda style.

Uh...I really don't care if what I listen to is "hip" or not on TA.

Your behaviour suggests otherwise.

Just because Trance music is almost only associated to uplifting melodies, doesn't mean that there cannot be a darker and often less cheesy take of it.

Concerning other suggestions check out tracks released by JOOF Recordings, Pharmacy Music and Propulsion Records. Some of the releases are presented and reviewed on Trancealert.com.

That has absolutely nothing to do with what I just said.

Because there are many different types of trance besides "uplifting trance" such as Rank1 - Airwave.
