If you were starting out a new vinyl collection tomorrow, what would it be?

I've been CD DJing on a pair of Pioneer CDJ100s's (and a DJM-300 mixer) for about two years now and after 20mins on a pair of Vestax PDX-2000's I finally saw the light and am going to start vinyl DJing. Problem is, I only have four vinyls and a fairly limited budget - probably can scalvage $500 or 20ish vinyls. So if you were in my position, what songs would you buy? I'm talking about your absolute favourite songs, both old a new, the songs that defined the genre. Songs that the crowd will love, songs that will set the place off. (And yes, I know this kind of stuff is in other sections of the forum, but I wanted an opinion from the local crowd).

Finally, what turntables do you guys use? I loved the vestax ones, but they're fricking expensive.

BTW, the four vinyls I have are:
Aurora - Ordinary world (Positiva)
Gouryella - Tenshi (Codeblue)
iio - Rapture (Data)
Veracocha - Carte blanche (Positiva)

Well i dont own any vinyls...i cant afford them.
But i think a tune you should have is:

Push - Strange World (2000 remake) (i dont know the label)

A great song that Tiesto, Ferry, and Armin have all spun consistently over the last 2 or so years. Must have IMO.

Hell yeah! Fantastic choon that's certainly been doing the rounds. I don't think there hasn't been a trance DJ that hasn't used that as a set ender :-) In a perfect world I would buy The Legacy and Universal Nation too.

OK that's one down ... 19 to go

Posted by discitelli on Jul-20-2002 11:53:

solar stone - seven cites (v-one or armin mix)

one word comes to mind whenever i hear this being spun live:

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your getting decks and your serious I would suggest (like most people I talked with when I was buying mine) Technics Technics Technics. Mark2's or Mark3's makes no difference. But if you're going to be playing out anywhere that's what you'll most probably use. Besides their cheaper than Vestax and you're not going to need most of the additional features on the Vestax. And from my experience Technics are more durable.

Yeah, from what I've been told and seen, Technics 1200s are basically the industry standard and installed in about every club in the world. And price is definitely an issue. Any suggestions on where would be the cheapest place to buy them?

Posted by Tak on Jul-21-2002 04:00:

Gotta say:

Gouryella - ALL
Cosmic Gate - Exploration of space
Marco V - Godd
Moogwai - Voila (Armin Van Buuren remix)

There are so many out there that you can't go too wrong, just buy all jeronemango's and you're set!

Posted by TBA on Jul-21-2002 06:43:

I'm in Sydney and light & sounds has fully loaded 1200's Mk2 w/case for $999.
One Stop DeeJay had Mk2's fully loaded for $850 and Mk3's for $950 (I think).
But if you show your local shop those prices they should match it. You shouldn't pay much more than that.

Firstly, thanks to jeronemango for the list of vinyls you're selling. On first glance at it, I'm interested in a couple of vinyls, but I'll send you an email if I decide to definitely purchase them.
lost tribe =gamemaster (original - signum)
gouryella = touryella
system f = out of the blue
push = strange world remake
cygnus X =superstring (rank 1 remix)
binary finary 1999 4 pack Orb,matt darey,pvd,
armin =communication (AM:PM)
Barthezz = on the move (dumonde/riva/original)
atlantis =fiji (spot on records)
Angelli And Nelson - Everyday (original /vocal mix)
peran van dijk - good time *cheese* :-P

Currently, my knowledge of trance is pretty much limited to a few dozen livesets and the Ministry of Sound albums - Trance Nation 1,2,3,4,2001,2002 and Addicted to Trance. Can anyone suggest what would be a good series (like Gatecrasher or something) to collect if you wanted to get a more broader set of tracks to listen to? Also, could anyone please list their picks from jeronemango's list? Thanx.

Thanks for the info on the Technics 1200s TBA. Actually, that's not a bad price. I know a mate who paid $1400 +P&H from the US a couple of months back.

Oh and thanks Tak too.

Finally, like my new avatar?

cdj100s's

Hey dj dowlz

Just a quick question or two. Can you play downloaded cdr's on cdj's not in mp3 just in music format? And are you actually selling your cdj's and mixer to get new stuff? I might be interested.

Thanks

As far as you're first question is concerned - absolutely! I don't think anyone would buy the CDJs if you couldn't play CDRs on them! Otherwise we'd have to buy S-Club-7, Bardot and Backstreet Boys! :-P And before people scream at me and say I don't support the industry, I have over 380 CD singles (140 trance, 140 dance, 100 pop) that I have bought, so I think I've made my fair contribution to the industry, thank you very much. Back to the topic at hand ... I think the manual says it can also play CD-RWs, but I've had problems with them and they don't normally work.

As far as selling my decks is concerned - it's a possibility. However, it might not be for a while. I definitely have CD-required gigs (ie Uni balls, 21sts and even the Australian National Debating Championships dinner) on the 4th and 10th of August. So I wouldn't be able to sell them before them.

Actually, I don't know if I'll sell them. CD players are cool cause you can test out songs you don't own or play songs that haven't been released etc. And even though DJing functions kinda suck (cause you usually have to play a fair bit of pop singles to get people dancing - nothing gets chicks dancing faster than Destiny's Child, trust me - before moving on to a continuous dance mix with a definite commercial flavour to it) they can make you a nice bit of cash and you get free food and booze! I really should reword that last sentence and bracket.

Moral of the story. If you're at a function, such as a Uni ball, with a lot of drunk, unenlightened people (ie not fans of trance):
1. Start out with pop - Destiny's Child, Kylie, etc etc
2. Pop brings girls
3. Girls bring boys
4. Now that boys are dancing, your crowd will be more receptive to commercial dance, so ...
5. Throw in some commercial dance and start your continuous set - ie Planet Funk - Chase the sun etc etc ad finitum
5. Play a little more commercial dance - Madison Avenue, Basement Jaxx etc
6. Move onto commercial trance ... Darude, Ian van Dahl etc
7. You might even want to chuck in a trancey remix of a commercial track - Madonna - What it feel like for a girl (Above & Beyond mix) for example
8. The key part of the night - enlight them to the world of trance.
9. Always finish with drunken beer songs (Holy Grail etc etc) - they will love you for it and you will gain a reputation as the greatest DJ ever (LOL - a drunk chick said I played a better set than anything she'd heard from Judge Jules - mind you that's not hard, the guy can't even consistently beat match - listen to Homelands 26.05.01 for a prime example! :-P Actually, I'd better stop being harsh on the guy. I mean he's not that bad - he did produce Angelic - Stay with me - and that song just takes you away!)
10. Get paid your $300 or however much you've arranged, so you can save up to buy your SL1200s MkIII

I promise I'll try to keep my posts on the topic next time :-)

What about the chicken song? Last wedding i was at the "dj" played that ole classic and the nanna's were throwing their super support briefs at him left right and centre.

You are a lucky man!

Well the Gatecrasher cds are pretty good, I have 'Wet', 'Discotech', 'Digital', 'Experience' and 'Digital Trance'. I'm hoping to get my hands on 'Black' sometime soon, if I can find it at a reasonable price...

Some of the Global Undergrounds are good if you want a feel for the more progressive and underground forms of trance/house.

Digweeds GU14 Hong Kong is pretty 'trancey'. Tracks like Medway - Flanker, Bedrock - Heaven Scent (Evolution Mix), Science Dept - Persuasion (Funk Function Future Mix) etc..

Both Oakenfold compilations are good too, be warned they're pretty old now and not the 'Oakenfold style' known to many.

Dave Seaman's Cape Town & Beunos Aires compilations are both hell wicked. Tunes such as Planisphere - Deep Blue Sea, Cass & Slide - Perception, Ambassador - The Fade come to mind

yeah so if you want to get some diversity in your CD collection get a couple of GU's.

I read somewhere that the chicken dance mixes well into Binary Finary 1998 PVD mix? LOL I just tried it and guess what? It does - the end of the chicken dance speeds up quite nicely to mix into this classic tune! I will *have* to play this one at my next gig and see what the crowd response is like!

Could you just imagine playing that a club? I'm not certain you'd be able to make it through to the start of the PVD mix without the manager throwing you out first!

Hehe, sounds like something DJ Jean would do.

I seriously doubt DJ Jean would play a track like that!!

I'm talking about Binary Finary btw

He'd probably mix the chicken dance into the Whistle Song or something...

Lol webmeister. Totally agreed! I don't think DJ Jean would have heard of PVD :-)

As far as the whistle song goes, I can't believe they re-released that P.O.S. song - could you possibly make a song any worse? (I'm talking abou the Flip 'n' Fill remix) Grrrrrr ... god I hate people with whistles!!! Underage wanna-be tryhards.

Posted by Tranzmit on Jul-25-2002 15:06:

Gatecrasher digital is really good with a decent mixture of tunes in different genres from trance to Tech-trance and onto ambient/Pure trance

I can heartily recommend the GU's for quality listening as they're more progressive but they take time to learn to enjoy.

There's heaps of stuff but it's not easy to know where to look for it. Thats another thing about cd mixing and thats that you can just download the tracks you can't get ahold of.
