It's a sad year for space buffs...
With this being the last year for our space shuttle being in service, I feel like an old friend is dying...
I have been a big follower of the shuttle program since it's inception and I'm truly sad to see it go...
It's sad, but the closest the space shuttle gets to retirement, the higher the public interest. Perhaps that's why NASA is pushing now the most amazing videos of the mighty spacecraft, thanks to the overload of high definition cameras...
This video shows the last launch of Atlantis from NASA's Kennedy Space Center on May 14, 2010. It combines all the footage from every camera on launch pad 39A. Stunning...
the video is crazy. have you seen When We Left Earth - The NASA Missions on bluray yet? its pretty good stuff.
maybe now the american government can spend more money in to finding osama bin laden.
Another setback for space exploration. :(

A few friends went down and saw the pre-dawn launch just before Easter. They said it was most amazing thing they have ever seen!
I gotta get me a ticket and head down for one of the last 2 launches.
I was in Daytona many years ago and was planning to look south at a launch on the off chance that I'd see something...
But when launch time happened, I was distracted and forgot to look at the right moment. What was shocking was that when I did look, I actually could see the smoke trail from the rockets. If we didn't have cloud cover over Daytona that day, I wouldve seen the shuttle way up in the sky...
That's the closest I'll ever be to watching it go up in person...
End of an era...
Once a few years ago we saw the Space Station go over, followed shortly by a Shuttle which was about 40 miles behind and approaching to dock. Still have a chance to see that again maybe. They have exact times shown on the NASA website.

There will be chances to see the Station June 7 to 19 depending on your location and weather, and probably later this year for the Shuttle. Looks like there is also a chance to see the Russian "Progress" space capsule which is tiny compared to the Shuttle.

Too bad NASA TV is now hard to get in Canada (it's free in USA).
They show detailed coverage of the activities on the Station and Shuttle, the launches etc, and several hours daily of views of earth from space.

I would love to see a space launch. My old high school teacher said its one of the most amazing things you'll see. The heat, the sound, the intensity... sometimes they are even delayed a few days due to technical problems or weather. So it makes the anticipation so much more incredible.
Is that Constellation program to replace the shuttles still on, with those Ares series rockets?
I hope so, because space is the coolest shit ever.
I think, for the time being, they're using a private launch platform...
