Who else is getting the new iPhizz?

I can't be the only one?

Lot less fanfare (on my facebook, which usally goes ga-ga over anything Apple) than I expected. The two most talked about features are the video chat (don't think it'll be huge in the end) and the 720p video (which will compete with the Flip Video device...an obvious win for iphone/ipod touch. The new Sprint 4G android phone does this too, though, and with an 8mp camera).

Some people can't wait, but overall it seems people are just like "whatever" right now. I think they are just fed up with AT&T more anything and don't want new contracts. Whenever the deal is up in 2001 and they most assuredly go on Verizon (too), think we'll see astonishing sales. Unless Android becomes polished and there's no big incentive to.

...and AT&T is ending its unlimited data plan, so the new video chat feature could become very expensive once the 200MB monthly bandwidth limit is exceeded? I guess there will be no data rollover, compared to talk minutes with rollover?

Put me in the whatever group. The resolution of the screen sounds impressive but I just wish they would have made it a little bigger like a 3.7". The bezel on the top and bottom are so thick. It would have been nicer if they used a bigger screen to fill the space up to the speaker and lower by making the bottom button smaller.

I don't think I would use the video chat. I don't think I would use the video recording either unless it really is as good as Steve hyped it up to be. I wonder if there is a time limit on clips or if it is only limited by storage space?

I'm pretty fed up with AT&T though. Coverage seems to be okay most places but it is horrible at my work. Everyone around me has decent connectivity speed (Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile) but my 3GS is constantly switching from 3G to E to 0 to Searching . . . It sucks when my phone doesn't ring but I eventually get a voicemail notice and then I can't listen to the voicemail

I think the video chat only works over WiFi so it shouldn't use the data plan.

Yep. Its WIFI only.

I'll be using this for video in the Ibiza clubs this summer since normal cameras are confiscated at the entrance.

The video chat is wifi only? LAME.

I agree with the last two points. There are always "nice to haves" after a release and I think screen size is in that category. In terms of the overall device, after trying out all of the Android phones in the market, I still think the iPhone is still the best mix of hardward/software. Although there are devices which do some things better,(better screen, multitasking, etc) IMO the iPhone executes the form/function the best. With more competition from Android, Apple can't afford to slow down in improvements and they seem to be listening to their customers somewhat.

Having said that, video chat is an overhyped feature, especially if it's only via WiFi. Personally, I don't even know why people were making a big deal out of this function prior to the announcement. It's a no-win situation for Apple in that if they left it out, people would bash them for it, and if they introduce it, people like me will downplay it as being a novelty.

The biggest issue I have is AT&T. It's been en vogue to disparage them and pine for a Verizon version of the iPhone. Although I feel that Verizon's network would be in the exact same situation as AT&T if it was the other way around in terms of network overload, I can't deny Verizon's superiority in reception. I'm tired of calls being dropped on AT&T on top of the spotty 3G. This is the biggest factor that makes me hesitate before jumping on the new iPhone. The phone itself is great, IMO.

Yes, Apple says they're working with the providers to bring it out in the wild in 2011.

The only thing is that they're charging $10 on top of service/data plan for 4G usage, even if your area doesn't have 4G, yet. Also, they are charging $5 for video conferencing feature. I'm sure Sprint cell coverage is better than AT&T and their network isn't overtaxed like AT&T, though.

The $10/mo more thing seems to becoming more normal over time. I have seen phone carriers starting to charge $10/mo more if you use some smart phones like the blackberry on their prepaid plans.

Won't be amazed if the contract plans start seeing similar things.

I think AT&T's take is to reduce bandwidth limits and others are just to charge more per month for the high bandwidth devices.

get a palm pre plus, way better than a iphone. pre has real mutiltask baby!

Posted by DaveT on Jun-07-2010 23:17:

BTW, even with the $10/mo more, it's still cheaper than AT&T's plan. And with unlimited bandwidth.

i wouldnt mind the 4 or evo! both are awesome esp the evo -- i like android more. the 4 is def an upgrade from the original. but for calls, texting, gps and rare internet look ups im fine with my windows mobile touch pro on an old $30 sprint 450min and unlimited data/txt plan. likely just pick up a used sprint hero for my gmail and facebook integration so long im able to keep my plan.

I got a 3GS back in january so i'm set for now, but the 4 does have some snazzy features. I like that they're letting you get the discount price if your contract is expiring anytime in 2010.
