Random Mini-Reviews Mixtape 1: The Random Session [a whole lotta genres]

Whatever is this one, then? Well, for a couple months now, I've been doing mini-reviews of randomly selected songs from my own music collection, a kind of tide-over until I can afford to buy new music again (don't ask, long story). I do five per week, and I've since passed the ten-week mark. For a bit of fun, I decided to see if I could make a mixtape out of the songs I've covered.

Still, I didn't want to go an easy route and simply line up all the trance that popped up (a fair bit); rather, my aim was to create a mixtape which provided, at the very least, the most interesting listening experience while adhering somewhat to the random nature of the songs coming up in the first place. As such, there are a few rough transitions and key clashes, but they don't detract much (plus, as anyone who's checked out my mixtapes before, this is par for the course anyway ). I also limited myself to 90 minutes, which means of 50 tracks, only 20 made the cut.

Ultimately, the only theme present here is random music forced into a cohesive set. For the most part, I believe I succeeded. Of course, the true judge of that will be those who take a listen.

You definitely won't find that here. Well, maybe for a few songs before I switch things up.

Well the tracklist is an obvious representation of how excellent this set is. However, like the title suggests, the real character of this set comes in how random it is. You are all over the place on this one. You play gangsta shit, you play fast crazy shit, you play slow mellow shit, you play cool prog-rock, you play trance. This set has everything. Mixing was solid for the amount of time you switched genres. Love the 3 hip-hop tracks in the beginning. Love how it gets a bit weird and crazy and then mellows out and you drop Winterlong. And you GOTTA love Pennyroyal Tea, so classic, definitely a highlight for me. Played some driftier, trancier stuff after that, and Michelle kinda came out of nowhere. A relatively pleasant surprise. Your mix ended on kind of a quiet note, I was sort of hoping for something really cool and interesting to finish the thing off but I will accept the mix the way it is, and I think it's great. Everybody needs to hop on this one and listen, this was very good.

smashing. i'll have some of this.

i was just going to post, fuck yes. because the mixtape is that awesome but i also think you should have pulled some faster cutting with one or two tracks. but anyhow. fuck yes!

just listened to this one, starts off really well with the hippy hoppy tracks, which i must insist, worked very well. i feel black now. we have some techy breaky stuff in here, flowing downstream. i think im on track 4 now, either way im diggin' it.

not too sure about fear factory though, bit too aggressive and goes against the grain but then again, this is a random mix so its allllriiiight. ANARCHY FUCK YEA.

hold on a minute, where am i? some sort of perpetual black and white cartoon??? oh yea, it must be the orb. half an hour in and im feeling tired, but im hearing some really soothing pads and dirty vinyls. i feel good, like the onset of the benzo's kickin' in. fantastic feeling so far.

!!! now neil young is in my face, along with his whole fucking band!! here come in, make yourself at home, teas in the pot and help yourself to the erowid vault behind the mirror. not sure if i invited kurt cobain though, he'll fucking wax the lot.

ah yes, some technoey shit, this is moar like it..glitchy beats on the street, we're on that shit right there, the mood of the mix has definately drifted somewhere else by this point..btw LFO is classical.weeweewoowoowah. 303!!

im not entirely convinced that michelle was placed correctly in the mix, paul mccartney walks into the party and just starts playing and you kind of fade it out and look sheepish. the marks and spencer advert is on the television. really delicious looking food and pure sleaze. mixing out and concluding the set on a quieter note. i was expecting something fucking spectacular, considering you played such a variety of songs, i was half expecting johnny cash to burst into the set and fuck shit up. ahh well never mind.

terrific mix, had everything a growing boy needs, minus the pack of smokes and a knife. keeping this one just for the neil young track.

One of the tracks I could have used was Willie Nelson's Georgia On My Mind, but I felt I'd used up my 'country-twang' quota with Winterlong (which is more country-rock, but still...).

Thanks for the comments, all. They've certainly been an 'eclectic' sort thus far.

Well, certainly a daring thing to put out

To get the sourness out of the way, the only thing i didn't like was going from experimental funny lands in to, shall call it... generic rock. About mid way through.
Neil Yong popping up was kind off humorous, but the smile faded when Nirvana's cranky draft appeared, where i was left grinding my teeth like a depraved amphetamine junk. Too sober . Although i am now complaining about randomness which is rather daft considering, just thought I'd bring it out there eh. I wasn't phased by the Beatles cut for instance, it's all fun to me.

Besides, it is quickly redeemed itself by the proven routine of including Gas and other outer space bliss. And anything else is fine. Cool techno part, although the hardfloor cut is not his best work. But that's random selection for ya.

Considering how this thing came together it's good fun to listen to, and also offers plenty of musical indulgence, although few and far in between. You gotta just take it and eat you fill i guess. I think i get it. Such a sweetheart i am. (the final part of the mix makes me apathetic, positively so i might add).

Looking forward to future randomness if you choose to continue.
