30 for 30: The Two Escobars

Has anyone been watching this series on ESPN? A few of them have been pretty good... especially the ones about Ricky Williams, "The Trial of Allen Iverson", and the one about Len Bias.

This week's was called "The Two Escobars"... it's seriously one of the most riveting documentaries I've ever seen. It's about the interrelationship between Pablo Escobar's rise/involvement (and drug money's involvement) in Colombia's national soccer team and the player Andres Escobar on the team, who was the model of humility and goodness, and the events that lead to his murder after scoring an own goal in the 1994 World Cup. I couldn't peel my eyes away from the tv for 2 hours... it was a fucking incredible film. I highly recommend you guys record or watch it when it comes on again.

Yeah, it was really well done. Except I felt the filmmakers attempted to humanize Pablo Escobar as a man of the Colombian people. Like fuck he was. That dude was a monster. He was a ruthless criminal.

Aside from that, the documentary was exceptional.

Kevin, if you haven't already watched it, The History Channel had a spectacular documentary on Pablo Escobar's fall. The entire 10 parts of it are now on Youtube. Here is the first part:

The rest are on Youtube.

Haven't seen that one man, thanks for the heads up. I'll definitely watch it. I agree with what you're saying about the "humanizing Escobar" thing. I couldn't tell if they were specifically doing that or trying to show how well he manipulated the poor for his own personal gains. Either way, yeah that dude was a monster. I did feel bad for his family though, when the PEPE's started closing in on Escobar and going after them to flush him out... how they gutted Escobar's cousin (or brother, can't remember) in front of his wife, and murdered another family member in front of his kids. Fucking brutal!

Ah I missed this! I gotta try to catch a rerun. It looked excellent.

My favorites so far have been "The U" and the Ricky one, naturally.

Oh shit... yeah I forgot about "The U". That is definitely my 2nd favorite one. Good call.

Yep he was a man of the Colombian people, having a player shot for scoring an unintentional own-goal at the world cup, that's what the people wanted.. for him to be brutally murdered.

Twat.

Incredible. One of the best made documentaries I've ever seen.

I don't usually watch 30 for 30, but I stumbled on this one and had to watch the whole thing. I found it quite fascinating.

It definitely keeps your attention. Very well done.

the one about The U was great

Straight outta LA was Horrible....

Not one mention of Bo Jackson's impact, Tim Brown, the additions of Roger Craig or Ronnie Lott or even Hostetler. ESPN should be embarrassed for airing that one

I agree on both counts. Even as a former Florida State student, watching "The U" was awesome. My 2nd favorite of the 30 for 30 series.

Ice Cube did a shitty directing job on the LA one. That episode sucked. The gay ass cartoons... ugh. The least he could do was use proper English and grammar while narrating. And yeah, how the hell could he neglect to mention Bo Jackson and the others? He was basically making it seem like he and Eazy E are solely responsible for Raider Nation.

i felt it was a good documentary. my top 5 so far:

1. Without Bias
2. The Two Escobars
3. June 17th, 1994
4. The U
5. Small Potatoes : Who Killed the USFL?

with a good number of honorable mentions

to answer a previous question; ESPN is one of the biggest sports networks in the US.

as for the Two Escobars, Great Great piece. I was moved.

the football player that died was killed because he stood up for himself outside of a night club after being taunted for the own goal and the people he wouldn't take crap from were drug cartel thugs who don't put up with shit.

so they killed him.

Pablo was actually friends with the whole Columbian football team. thus, their stories were intertwined.

loved the escobar documentary, haven't seen any others though . have the gretzky one on dvr though; need to get on top of this. i was really impressed by the one i saw.

Just wanted to add that I did find it a bit problematic how they depicted Pablo Escobar towards the end, having his felon scumbag cousin as well as his sister speak highly of him...along the lines of "under Pablo this murder would've never happened..those bad bad PEPEs, etc. etc.". It was a bit tasteless to sum up both deaths as victims of Pablo's Medellin rivals, thus "sharing the same destiny".
I wished they had counterbalanced this myth of a "necessary strong leader" to maintain order. Nevertheless, I rely on the average viewer's intelligence to take those statements with a grain (or more) of salt.
