Internet Service Provider

I need a new ISP. I live in Ontario and I'm moving into an apartment. I don't want Rogers or Sympatico because of their caps and/or limits. I want something as fast or faster than cable but as fast or less fast than T1. Any ideas?

Unhappy

I think you may be SOL on that note...
Just about all of the ISPs are looking at caps.
Unless you want to shell out the clams for a T1 or something like that...

How much is T1 and can I get it in an apartmen. I know it's fast and businesses use it but that's all I know hehehe.

KarateKid which one ... ?

atleast a couple of hundred i believe..

you might wanna look into 3rd party DSL companies if u wanna avoid Sympatico or Rogers caps. There aren't any 3rd party cable provider since Rogers holds a monopoly over that but if there's Sympatico in ur area that generally means that you can find a third party DSL company too. You might be required to buy the DSL modem as well which isn't always bad since it might reduce ur monthly fee. Just hope that you're not located in a DSL blackzone like I am and FORCED onto Rogers along with all other 500+ homes in the area... :[

I heard from someone that there is a company that won't be having download limits thats DSL but unless I can get that with something as fast or faster then cable then I might stick with Rogers, hopefully I'll get a good deal of some kind.

Shit that must suck. I can get pretty much anything but my problem is that I'll be living in an apartment so DSL may be the best way or maybe ADSL.

Thanks for the help guys ,much appreciated and any other help/info people can give me is also appreciated .

KarateKid alternative...

if u live in one of those expensive apartments such the Apex or Cityplace buildings on the Lakefront u can prolly get vDSL which is basically equivalent to a T1 since each apartment complex has itz own central office which is pretty sweet.. ask ur landlord.

I might be able to help you out.

It's only a small apartment in Streetsville (next to Mississauga) so I dunno how exactly I'd get anything too good. Maybe ADSL which is now the equivelant to Rogers with the speed caps in place.

repeating myself (again)

www.accessv.com DSL no limits, great speeds, no fucking caps, no downtime. 25$/month first 3 months...

I should get paid for the referrals i'm doing...

haha... i live like 5 minutes away from there... Streetsville is part of Mississauga just like Scarboro is part of Toronto.

So it's faster than cable... before the caps??

Posted by malek on Jul-22-2002 06:55:

its 130K/sec download and about 17k/s upload.

So its not faster than cable... but at that price you can't complain.

Also there's a company called Rocler.com they have a 370K/s down and 70K/up speed at 55$+tx/month DSL

Posted by Blue. on Jul-22-2002 16:16:

Rogers Cable internet speeds used to be 3MB/s limit but now it's capped at 1.5MB/s and they never even told us.

I'm not too concerned about speed caps, because it's still faster than dialup, and any huge files I download, I give them the day to finish. I'm just not looking forward to when total byte caps are implemented by Rogers anyone know when this will happen? (hopefully it won't)

Posted by Blue. on Jul-22-2002 16:36:

The limits fucking suck. I dunno when they'll be implemented but Sympatico is doing it as well.

It's been long done.

i'm on primus

.. not bad, not as reliable as sympatico

I've seen my browsing speeds cut in half by rogers...

...I'm still waiting for the monthly bill they send me to do the same.

I'm not talking about the speed caps, I'm talking about the download limits per month. And it hasn't been long done for me, it's been a week or so since Rogers slowed down for me, that's it. I just hate how they're giving us a limit to how much we download

Posted by c0ld 0ne on Jul-22-2002 20:27:

I was referring to download/upload limits.

Posted by Bizz on Jul-22-2002 20:57:

The total byte cap has been done for Sympatico, not for Rogers... right now I'm not aware of the day when Rogers will put up it's byte cap

Does anyone know how reliable the Rocler service is? Specifically the 3mbit/s service for 55 bucks a month??
