What should I download?

So, I'm staying at quite a nice hotel. The arseholes decided to charge me �15 for 24 hours worth of internet. Even McDonalds has free wi-fi! On the upside, the connection is outrageously fast, so I'm going to rape them back.

What should I download? I got 1GB worth of German audio lessons last night.

i was recently introduced to a new comedy series, community. its pretty fucking funny. sushipunk's the art of homosexual rape audio book is also a classic.

Where are you?

TV Shows and Movies, they take an awful amount of space.
Oh and computer games, too.

My hotel has a great T1, but nodes throughout the building will throttle bandwidth to certain areas of excessive traffic. Occasionally when this happens, I get a handy little call from Sboca and they can inform me what part of the building is experiencing this, even the IP of whomever is doing it- to which they typically lock the person out of the network until they're dealt with.

It's rather insidious, but so long as you aren't in the US, this probably won't happen to you.

Just 1 T1 for a hotel, Hal? Are you certain the service isn't stacked upon multiple times? Only asking, because a single T1 line can only carry 1.5mbps up & down. If shared between all the rooms in the hotel, this would be ridiculously slow if multiple people were on at the same time.

Quick way to find out is, are downloads ever faster than 192KB/s?

I guess I am not 100% sure. I've gotten 3mb/s download here on the weekends though, so it's probably multiple lines stacked.

Oh yeah, you have something quite a bit faster at that hotel than what a single T1 could offer.

I am hesitant to say it's a T3 though - I always thought those were for large office buildings, but I am generally a pleb when it comes to internets, so I could be quite wrong.

Well, you gotta think about it like this...

I'm going to make some assumptions here, so bear with me if these are incorrect.

I'm assuming your hotel is a 100+ Room Hotel located in an area that usually keeps the occupancy levels at the very least 50% year round.

You have a front desk with at least 1 terminal for check-in/check-out procedures, with the entire POS system setup on that terminal, all credit card transactions are processed and handled through this terminal.

All 100+ Rooms either have a LAN-Jack or a wireless service throughout the hotel is provided (or both?). Either way the service is distributed amongst all those rooms and possibly has the Hotel's computer(s) connected on this connection as well.

If only 1 T1 line were divided up between all of the potential users that could access this at the same time, the speed would actually be less than what a single 56k modem could provide to one computer (this is under the assumption that 100+ different IP's were utilizing all the available bandwidth allocated to them).

Here's the other part that you probably didn't think about. Dedicated lines like T1 or greater can also be setup to handle the phone systems in the office. Instead of having a dedicated Trunk POTS system, the hotel would more than likely have this setup all on the network connection already brought into the building. If it's setup this way, half the line has the potential to be used up by the Telephone systems (usually quite a bit less though).

Honestly, when adding all of this up. I wouldn't be surprised if your hotel has something setup that can handle more than what even a T3 could offer. Probably an OC-3 (155Mbps) or an OC-12 (622Mbps).

And everything was generally spot-on, save for the fact that our front desk/back office computers are all wired and on Hilton's own, seperate internet connection. They like to keep tabs like the shadowy overseer that they are. In fact, I'll bet they're reading this right now. Hi, Hilton admin! I hope your day is going well and I promise all the girls in those pictures were at least over 18!

I hope that isn't the case. Oh well, I'm only here for another twelve hours or so, with no real reason to require internet access.

Since pkc was the only one who gave me any real suggestion, I suppose I'll go with Community.

Here's a tip for anyone staying in a W hotel.

The cheap bastards try to charge you for in room internet.

Fuck that.

Go down to the lobby, log on to the free wifi (get the cookie) and go back up to your room. As long as you don't let the computer sleep or interrupt the connection, you'll only have to go down once every 24 hours to renew the connection.
