Kicking off Independence Day in America

Yes yes, it's tomorrow. But I'm eager to celebrate! So how knowledgable are Americans in regards to history and what July 4th means?

Take it away, Jay Leno:

Notice how grandpa at the end is the only one who knows anything. It would be hilarious if it weren't so depressingly sad.

God, whenever I watched those, I had a really tough time believing people were that ignorant. I almost feel like they're paid to not answer correctly.

To be honest, I'm not all that proud of being an American.

I'll be spending my 4th working 6pm - 2am.

I would dare say foreigners know more about July 4 than most Yanks do, though that's quite common for almost everything other than maybe NASCAR, Baseball and over the top Christianity.

Just because half the people in this country are idiots doesn't mean you shouldn't be proud of having the privilege to live in a free country. A lot of people take freedom for granted just because they feel embarrassed by their neighbors. Would you rather live somewhere where the government tells you when you can and cannot take a shit? Also, I'm sure a lot of other countries have their fair share of idiots.

HELL YEAH USA USA USA MURICAAA WOOHOO!!!

Yeah!

Just because I can't do anything about the bank holding a check I deposited for five days while showing the balance to include it without actually applying it to the money I have in the account in order to then charge me for over-drafting the account by more than the check was worth doesn't mean I can't enjoy the freedom to express my impotent rage.

Yay! Mother-fucking America!

It's a 17.5 billion dollar a year industry. Without it, PayDay Usurer Loans (400% APR) wouldn't have nearly the market that they enjoy, today.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/creditcards/

This one talks about almost everything banks have done, from surprise fees and interest hikes on credit cards to over-draft 'protection'. So, great! What a fucking wonderful country. When the balance in my bank account is subject to what is essentially informationally one-sided, zero-sum game theory AND they can get away with it, it totally pisses me off.

Just as a fucking reference point, our van got broken into, last year. The idiots who broke into the van were going around to every parking lot in this town and looking for unlocked car doors. We had a door which was busted and couldn't lock so our car was targeted. Someone saw them doing this, in our parking lot, and called the cops.

The thieves were caught with maybe ten dollars worth of junk. Shit like an old portable CD player practically forsaken to the elements in our 1991 Plymouth Deathrap LE. They also took a tire-gauge, on its last legs anyway, and a tampon left prophylactically in the glove-box.

For ten dollars worth of garbage, the county spared no expense in prosecuting these dangerous thieves. And rightly so: It's not as if they should have been allowed to get away with having poor taste or my adrenaline shooting through the fucking ceiling answering the door with a cop on the other side of it. I actually do believe the thieves got what they deserved (pleaded guilty and three years of probation) but considering what the bank gets away with, it is nothing less than a travesty.

Here the bank comes along, operating on the same ethical principals. A door which won't lock being the equivalent to a bank account which maintains an available balance beyond what the actual applied balance is, in the account, and one trip to the grocery store for goods which only exceed the actual balance by seven fucking dollars, and we're accruing $35.00 per day in over-draft fees.

It's fucking bullshit.

Classic 2nd generation uselessness. He's well-spoken and at least competently informed. His kid can barely speak English, and is raising a son who, we can only assume, will be another world-beater.
