Connecting laptop to TV via RCA
In the past I've been able to plug a 3.5mm headphone jack into my computer with RCA connectors on the other end. The red, white and yellow plugs then go into the TV so I can use it as an external screen.
At the moment, all I have is a cable which is missing yellow. I thought I'd just watch movies in mono rather than stereo. However, despite being set to 'AV', the TV thinks it's getting no signal. When I plug the red and white in to the appropriate ports, I'd expect to get sound, but I still get nothing. The laptop's sound is up to full and when I pull the headphone jack out I get blasted.
Any ideas why this wouldn't be working? I'm using a Asus netbook with Windows 7. Could it be something to do with the chipset etc? I don't see why if I can use headphones perfectly, the sound can't be routed to the TV via the same method.
The only thing I've thought of is that the cable is broken. I bought it from some woman on the side of the road for less than a buck, so there's a chance, but it looks to be in pretty good condition.
just wondering ...
do you have this?
also i have ran into this problem this weekend with my win7 laptop. it's odd. I connected my HDMI and audio cables to the tv. video works, but the sound doesn't work. so i had to connect my audio cables to my receiver, and the sound works fine now. it might be my tv, since it's a bit old, however the video looks pretty good on my tv with HDMI. /shrug

You'll need to delete System32.exe.

This thread hurts my brain.
uh.
the 1st image will only give you audio anyway...
what outputs to you have on your laptop for video? (svideo/vga/hdmi?)

Yeah, the lead has to be fucked. Especially after telling us where you got it. I've got a few of these that appear to be fine(look new), but don't work.

| Originally posted by r5a you can't just plug a 3.5 to RCA and hope to get video and audio, lol. your laptop headphone jack or 3.5mm jack DOES NOT output video, just audio, thats why your not getting picture. You use the 3.5 -> RCA for your audio channels COMBINED with your composite or svideo to get picture chief. |

| Originally posted by Domesticated Well, that method has worked for me since before the year 2000, when I first hooked up a video camera to my television. It's also worked with every laptop I've had prior to this one. Time to review your technical knowledge, champ. |

| Originally posted by shaw that's because most of those are A/V ports, not headphone jacks (as it likely is on your netbook). The correct 3.5 connector for it has 3 rings, not 2. The 3rd is for video. Even if it IS an a/v jack on the laptop, using a regular 3.5/stereo adapter won't work because it's not making contact in the correct place. You can't just yell at it and say "I WANT VIDEO THIS TIME" and have it physically rearrange the rings on the connector. |

| Originally posted by Domesticated Cheers. That seems to make the most sense. However, imagine the laptop's 3.5mm port is just for audio only. The rings might be arranged like this: _|__|_ And an 3.5mm AV cable would have rings like this: |__|__| and therefore not match up. But, as I'm using a simple headphone to R/W RCA jack, the rings on the plug are the same as headphones, so I should at least be getting sound through the TV. I just think the cable is broken. It's happened to me in the past that I've lost one channel due to one of the three R/W/Y wires becoming frazzled. |
lol ok.
let us know when you get video working. i dont expect it anytime soon
