Spain - Germany (July 7) [Semi Final]

May very well turn out to be the game of the tournament.

I know the Germans are in great form right now but so far they have destroyed good teams with crap defenses.

If Spain finally do show up on Wednesday, I think they will have the Germans number and will go through. 3:1 to Espanyol.

I'm thinking the Germans have got the bit in their teeth and aren't going to suffer a Spanish team that barely got past Paraguay and Portgual. 2-1, Germany.

sounds about right to me. the spanish side had too much trouble scoring against paraguay and portugal. let's be honest here - the german team has looked incredible in the back. 2-0 to the germans with a podolski goal, i hope.

A couple of things to consider though:

- Portugal had not conceded a goal in the world cup and had also gone without conceding in 22 of their past 26 games without conceding.

- Paraguay also have an extremely staunch defense and barring that lucky goal Italy got against them in their opening game, had also gone without conceding a goal in the world cup.

- The fact that Spain was able to breach the defenses of both the above teams shows that they have the quality to unlock even the toughest defenses. Paraguay and Portugal are primarily defensive teams while the Germans will come out to attack which can make it easier for Spain to hit them on the break.

- Thomas Mueller is suspended for the game which will be a massive blow for Germany. He really was the creative force behind a lot of their goals and is their top scorer for the tournament.

- David Villa

I think Spain will take this one.

Too hard to score playing against 9-10 defenders! that's the reason.
Ultimately, we are a highly disciplined and capable team, stuffed full of stars, who are capable of beating any team in the world on their day.

"Tiki-Taka" vs "Teamgeist" can't wait!

viva espana. David Villa <3 Shame Silva & Mata aren't playing but at least the 'Navas' Experiment seems over, he spends so much time on the ground he could be a member of groundstaff.

yeah i can't wait to wake up for this game tomorrow!!!
and yeah the first 15 min or so of the 2nd half against argentina - it certainly looked like argentina was playing against 9-10 defenders haha

and smcmulli- i feel like you're some sort of spambot that registered in 2001 and is making a reappearance.

I have to say that if Spain make the final that I'm tempted to find a cheap flight to Barca or something for sunday.

LOL meanie!

but all in all the Germans did not show up to play nearly as tough as they should have. They were more about defense (which doesn't score goals) and when they tried to attack the Spanish defense held too strong.

Every team has their niches and Spain is def a German niche (proven twice in 2 years)

So all in all the Spanish played a hell of a lot better ALTHOUGH I will say that had the German defense not been as strong as it was that match could have easily been 3-0 but thankfully it was not.

Sucks to lose AGAIN in the semi...we've been ALMOST making it since 2002 =/

To be fair, Joachim Lw went in with the same plan he had for the games against England and Argentina. The difference was that this time they played against the best midfield in the world, one that rarely ever makes mistakes and is masterful at maintaining possession. And then, their defense is far superior to Argentina's and England's. Argentina has questionable players in the back and the English defenders were playing as if they were all night up drinking the night before.

I think the inexperience of the Germans finally showed yesterday. They just seemed very very nervous and didn't know what to do with the ball when they had it.

One analyst made a great comment about how teams playing Spain put this pressure on themselves that they wont see much of the ball through the game and that whenever they do , they have to make it count which turned out to be Germany's undoing.

Obviously Mueller's absence made a big difference since his replacements were rubbish but I think this German team is going to be one to watch out for in Brazil in 4 years time. Most of the players are very young and they are already a couple steps short of the world class level.

On a side note, Germany used to be my most hated team until this world cup. I guess the main reason was Ballack and not the actual team. I think they really did play the most attractive football in this tournament.

Hear that Ballack? Go retire now.

Let's not shake that retirement stick too hard. Klose will be 36 in 2014, which is pretty long in the tooth for a striker.

I agree with a lot of this. I think Mller not playing did hurt us but would it have been enough to win? That is questionable because Germany as a whole played extremely nervous as you said. Every team has a weakness and Spain is clearly Germany's (second time in 2 years to prove that)

Germany still needs to work on some stuff but I think they have a great team and by 2014 we'll see how much better they've gotten. They played awesome in this cup nonetheless.

LOL @ the Ballack comment, as much as I've always loved zee Germans that guy does get under my skin. I think he's talented but his cockiness and ego are a huge turn off.

I'm really hoping he at least plays his last cup in 2014

Shit how awesome would be be for Germany (with how strong of team they have) go to Brazil in 2014 make it to the final and WIN! All of this in Brazil LMAO /wishful thinking
