Becoming ‘One’: Anatomy of a #1 hit

Interesting article on Beatportal.com about the SHM track that went to #1 in a few days.

http://www.beatportal.com/feed/item...omy-of-a-1-hit/

Personally, I think that although it makes some good points, it is a bit oversimplified. The things it talks about doing are a lot easier when you've already got a crew of established worldwide names like the SHM guys. Points such as "Make a great record" and "Create a great brand for yourself" are easy to talk about and much harder to accomplish, although I think the article does try to address that somewhat.

Anyway, interesting read for the new and upcoming producers out there.

that track is basically the worst track ive ever heard so im reading this with great skepticism. i dont really want to be anything like the terrible swedish cheesy sellouts. and not only does their music sucks, they are complete assholes too. worst attitude within edm i have witnessed.

I totaly agree, just terrible track.
But it is quite simple, they`re mostly festival djs, and they use that good vibe on festivals to promote their crappy tunes. I remember them playing at EXIT festival last year, they were just terrible, crappy track selecton, crappy flow and vibe, and in some segments even crappy mixing. And somehow crowd was so happy and everyone danced, but it wasnt cuz of their music, its because festivals have that good and positive vibe, and partly because Moby killed it before them :P

For what it's worth, I didn't really like the track either, but then again there is a lot of music that gets hyped that I don't particularly like. It just seems to reinforce the theory that its more about that marketing than the music.

I think you're right. The UK market is especially bad, not that it exactly translates to EDM though which is less marketing driven.

There was this great expose done by king pedo (not joking - long story) - Jonathan King.

He was very famous as a radion DJ and he took the Daughter of a Cabinet Minister (Edwina Curry's Daughter) and promoted the hell out of her upcoming debut single. After a fair amount of work and negotiation, he got a guarantee for at least the #2 national chart based solely on levaraged marketing with the large retailers and distributors.

He then blew the whistle the night before it was due to be released - the best part was: they hadn't even recorded a song. It was all just marketing an bullshit and they'd managed to secure a "hit" record.

As for the SHM, I have no idea what the hype is about. They play cheesey crap-house-pop records and wave their arms about a lot.

It's not as though they're trying to do without marketing, though. I would say, to the credit of this statement, that it tends to be more focused, although lacking refinement. Most of it (at least I find it) is massively obnoxious.

Interesting story RE: expose'. Is there a link to it?

It was so long ago (1997) that there's hardly any info on it.

The only thing I can find was from sinitta's (late 80's early 90's pop tart) wiki:

"Also in 1997 Sinitta's vocals were used for the fake single, You Can Do Magic by the fictitious group The Mojams.[citation needed] The single produced by her former hitmakers, Mike Stock & Matt Aitken was created for the ITV TV investigation programme, The Cook Report with journalist Roger Cook in an endeavour to expose underhanded business practices in the music industry, known as 'hyping' where record labels buy their own music into the charts. Debbie Currie, daughter of the controversial former British Government health minister, Edwina Currie was used as the face for the singer and single. Sinitta was not credited on the single. With her music career in decline, Sinitta returned to the stage."

Jonathan King was the presenter and Cook did the research AFAIK.

Yeah, nothing really groundbreaking in that article but it was a interesting read. No big surprise....marketing works!

If you have $ you can invest in this or buy houses, gamble... money is all in this world.

She's not a bad singer at all.

All of those child singers usually aren't very skilled for the reason that they want other kids to sing along.

Beatport -

'We get between 7,000 and 15,000 new releases a week'

'I know this seems obvious, but in my 30+ years (I know, really) of selling records, one thing is always true: most releases suck'

No wonder most tracks never make an impact.

i dont give a shit about swedish house mafia, they suck.

Posted by evo8 on Jul-08-2010 11:27:

its funny - they make a big list of stuff that "you need" to be a beatport no.1 with a good tune being 3rd in the list, however the irony in the article is that SHM achieved their no.1 without a good tune lol

That includes most of the ones that make it to "number one," too.

How much does a #1 hit on beatport worth for the artist anyways? 200$ ??

wow thats really sad, you can sign anything no matter how bad the track is. Im sure someone can cook up something in 5 min and get it signed easily

This should be a contest for this forum! Come up with something in the shortest amount of time it takes to come up with it, e-mail it to a list of labels, and see how many of them get offers.

The equation for determining the winner would be number of offers/length of time in hours it took to come up with the tune.

Posted by Richard Butler on Jul-09-2010 13:23:

I often notice this comment about 'most releases being sh1te'.

Makes me wonder whether most of us are deluded, myself included.

I'd like something called the BRUTAL TRUTH THREAD where you most a work and people don;t hold back and try and feedback as if you were just a random producer offering on beatport. Given we only buy a small percentage of each months releases, we must be a lot fussier than the normal feedback threads would indicate.

This won't appeal to everyone, but for me as an obsessive I'd love just a thread where the rule is TRUTH AND BRUTALITY ONLY - NO CONSTRUCTIVE CRITISCISM ALLOWED.

In fact this would be unique amongst forums - any chance we could have such a thread here in this production part - I hate having to click into the feedback section and out of here.

Love.

While I don't care much about the track highlighted in the article, and a lot of it was information that has been presented before, I did like the use of actual numbers and data that was presented in the article.

Posted by music2dance2 on Jul-10-2010 10:36:

Good article nothing new in it but helpful to read.

I believe the track would of got to number 1 regardless. Those guys are massive in their own right, and huge as SHM. Now as soon as people catch wind of SHM very 1st release after years of them touring and putting on events, plus the fact they have their own individual careers, it isnt any real surprise the outcome of the track in the charts.

People follow their every move, it was obvious they would get number 1. That said have you guys heard this? I dont know if its a joke or not.

A blantant rip off of SHM - one.

The biggest cvnt of them all. I can't believe he won a grammy for ripping off a coldpay track and I can't figure out who is shitter for it: the grammy's or guetta.

These people literally give EDM a bad name - it's people like this (note I did not use the word artist) that make me understand why some people think dance music is crap. It's music for douchbags and douchslags, nothing more.

Posted by Zombie0729 on Jul-10-2010 19:28:

and i'm just going to chime in out of complete absurdity... mr. guetta is currently supporting one of my remixes lawls
