Techie Help

I got a new 2tb hard drive and some ppl on newegg suggested running the manufactures utility to zero test the drive to insure its good. Problem is the dos utility when run on my xp system can't access the drive due to size limitation. I got the drive for video on my mac so I'll probably just use it without testing it.

Anybody else test new drives before using them?

I never test em..though if you want to, do a thorough checkdisk using the built in Windows utility. Install the hard drive, then open "my computer", right click the hard drive, choose properties, tools, error checking. Check both boxes and run a full scan.

I've been thinking about getting a 2TB drive, but a techie friend of mine recommended against it, saying the really big drives aren't as dependable for personal use, and that I'm better off going with a 500 gig'er. Any thoughts?

I got a seagate from newegg because they were running a sale $99 for 2tb, but i read a bunch of complains for failures. Its never easy to tell if there as a bad batch or only ppl who have problems take the time to post comments. I read it was drives that were built in china, mine came with a Thailand sticker so I'm probably ok.

Seagate is quality..I don't think you have anything to worry about. Like you said, people with negative experiences are probably 10X more likely to write reviews than people who have no problems.

I don't think that's the case anymore, but I could be wrong. The issue comes with the size of the individual platters in the drives. With a 1TB drive HDD manufacturers will usually use 2-3 platters each with a size of 2x500GB or 3x333GB platters to come out with 1TB. However, for 2TB drives they were using 2x1TB platters and the failure rate came from the issues with the physical size limitation for the platters, with the capacity to hold that much information.

That was about a year ago when I was reading about failure rates related to that. I haven't heard anything recently, so my belief is that HDD manufacturers have gotten over those issues.

Ben or anyone else, know if that's been resolved?
