MMORPGs are souless pieces of shiit

after years of (deserved) avoidance, i recently got the feet wet with a handful of titles, most notably guild wars & DnD. fucking hell, what boring pieces of excrement.

i cannot understand the people that play these games to high levels, for months or years on end. the gameplay sucks, the (text-provided) stories suck, and there's just no fucking point to any of it, other than levelling.

i held out on trying them as long as i could, because i just suspected the above to be true. and fuck im pissed off i was so right. nothing i played in my 25hrs of GW or 9hrs of DnD came close to any of the notable single-player RPGs ive played, and if this is where PC games are headed then developers can go fuck themselves.

for me on games such as this, I actually get enjoyment out of building my character. I have played maybe like 4-5 mmo's and usually get hooked in the beginning. a formula that i've noticed is that by the time I start getting like half way to the level cap, the games just turn into boring grindfests.

I think I enjoy the game more in the beginning when I'm actually gaining a level or 2 easily in a day. once it gets to the point that it takes like 4 hours of grinding to get 1/5 of a level through, I get bored and quit.

only mmo I stuck with was ultima online back in the day. though there was really no story or anything there, I think it was something about the freedom of doing just about anything you wanted. whether you enjoyed killing players or not, the fact that other people always had the choice to kill you always had you looking over your shoulder. and the fact that you lost your equipment when you died, rather than skills/experience I believe is much better.

and just a footnote, uo was my first mmo and I was like 13 so it was cool to have no life at that age.

UO was also a shitload more fun than anything that's being spewed out these days. It didn't take months or years to build a character (and despite the 700 pt limit, you had more freedom to choose how you character turned out), you had freedom right from the start to go wherever you wanted, and the gameplay was much more fast-paced than games like WoW. Oh ya, and PKing people was actually acceptable in the beginning, you could own your own pirate ship and house, and you could steal people's shit.

Which Guild Wars did u try? Nightfall would be the best IMO. You picked the worst MMO's though dude, lol. You should have tried Age of Conan, Aion and yes WoW. WoW is still the shit for MMO's and City of Heroes is up there, though it's getting old too.

only played the first guild wars.

WoWs gameplay doesnt differ markedly from those games already played.

I think jumpgate evolution and/or black prophecy will be the only titles I ever play again, because if nothing else I need a space combat sim, and can ignore some of the more aggravating MMO tropes.

I played Aion starting in beta and played live for the first maybe 2-3 months. This is a perfect example of the type of game I dislike. I thoroughly enjoyed the leveling up to 25 or so (I think the cap was 60?). At that point, all the quests were either to walk halfway across the world, taking 2 hours to complete only to get 1/10th of a level through, or required groups which sometimes could take forever and always ran the risk of a griefer who leaves the group if they don't get all the drops they want.

At this point it was taking me like a week to gain a level (only played a couple hours a day). The few other MMO's I've played after UO all followed this formula. Like spam said, in UO if you really knew what you were doing, you could max out your character in like a month. At that point you can go around and enjoy the game as you wish.

edit: and another HUGE turnoff with Aion was the lack of control with gold farmers. Everywhere you turned there were bots.

Im a huge RPG geek but i just cant get into MMOs. Every one ive tried i got bored before the trial period was even over. Also people online are usually jerks. Which so pisses me off because i want to play KOTOR but won since its a stupid MMO.

Never had that problem. You usually get a no if u ask much higher levels than u to help u run through a low level dungeon or quest line cause it's a waste of time for them. There is an etiquette to playing MMO's, and u need to learn how to play each one and the lingo involved so you understand what all the conversations mean in cities, etc. It's not KOTOR either, the MMO is "The Old Republic" To each their own, but TOR is going to knock out WoW's domination me thinks.

It makes a big difference if you have friends to play with. It's kind of like how baseball is pretty dumb unless you have friends to play with. Not that I am saying MMOs are on the same level as athletics, but you know what I mean.

What Hal said. +1

It seems MMO's are popular because of a social aspect that most casuals gamers want from their video gaming as well as playability in exploring new worlds. It doesnt make the industry better by engrossing it with all these new MMO IP's. But I see why people enjoy playing at large lengths.

I DID play with a friend. Playing a shit game with a friend only makes it moderately less shit.

Posted by BTG on Jul-26-2010 04:32:

i haven't really read the entire post. but i agree.

txt based story should only exist in 1993 DOOM era.

i was really excited about Huxley (which isn't exactly an MMORPG) but i played the beta and it was complete shit.

Well you have to have the ability to make friends as well, in order for it to be as fun.

Posted by pkcRAISTLIN on Jul-27-2010 00:33:

Having a whole bunch of other people playing doesnt make gameplay any less shit. Just more tolerable.

dont worry about him pkc.

some people really like bejeweled too. it's best to just let it be, and ignore it like some kind of homeless person.

Posted by Rodrico on Jul-27-2010 19:02:

lol, I never said the gameplay wasn't bad. I was just explaining to you why MMO's work. You're looking into the wrong genre if you're looking to be amazed by graphics, story, or gameplay.

Wait u guys are missing the main point in playing MMO's...Role Playing. It's Cosplay but in a virtual world...people get off on this.

I'd say try Eve Online, so many options in there it didn't really get boring for me but I just chose going out w friends instead of "really" trying to delve into the game...

I have more fun in single player games though...

I played WoW for 3 years straight. Loved it. I worked my way into one of the best raiding guilds that was very organized and that is what MMO's are all about. Some of my best gaming experiences were with this game and the people I played with on a regular basis. I have played a few others and they just don't do it for me. My last hope is ToR which I'm quite confident can get back into the MMO world that WoW did.

UO was legendary, i played that shit everyday for 3years bed a t6am up at 6pm repeating it over and over again..... Than i got a life lol but it true no other mmo's i have played are NO WAY near as good as that WoW, age of conan all shit in comparison.

Posted by euphoria on Aug-19-2010 15:39:

I played GW, huge waste of time. I regret every minute of it.

Agreed. What ruins it is not being able to see other live players out in the world, except in towns. It's only half an mmo, and the quests we're boring along with the explorations.

Add me to the list of no life when that game came out. I don't understand how over 10 years later no other game can compare. I stopped playing MMorpgs after Ultima Online because they are just really shit.
