Stuck in a rut regarding wether to move forward on a project....but a good rut...
So, my favorite track ever produced (from any style of music period) is Piledriver from Andy Gray (link below)
Well, after long talks I've acquired rights to remix and release but good lord it's intimidating after going back and hearing how great this track was/is. Going to have some top shelf remixers on the project, but I'm still in doubt Andy's mix will ever be topped. Comes off to me as being one of those tracks that is just too good and too unique to be remixed; however, I could be bias'd. That's where this post comes in.....Just wondering what you guys thought? How could you envision remixing this piece? I may give it a shot myself, but it's so hard to imagine this track out of its element and sounding even remotely as good.

Regardless, I'm stoked and it's a good problem to have
It'll be a good package even if it takes me 6 months to get it together. For those of you who have been around you know how big this tune was.
after hearing the track for the first time, I think I'd go for a breakbeat remix.
I was hoping it'd be something I could give a shot, but my style wouldn't fit with this at all. I can see you doing some pretty cool stuff with it, though.
Good luck.
if you go trance, i think scot project does the best and most unique remixes
if you go electro , i think wolfgang gartner has great tunes when he remixes.
Good to hear you finally got the rights, Stephen.

Break trance with plucked chords, long moogish bass-line, a short-percussive mid-line bass, a prominent mid-pitch hi-hat with the emphasis in the mix, still on the vocals. Personally, I'd let it build, over time, starting off with a very quasi deep-house pattern and feel, then letting the other instruments crescendo around the singer's vocals. I would make interplay between the bass-lines and kick drums a focal-point of the music bed. I'd also do without any break.
Personally, I think trying to match up to the mix you posted may be a little wrong-headed. Not that I think your remark puts yourself in competition with him but I do think it sells other possible interpretations short while holding emulation as the test for quality.
OMG I want in I want the package just to noodle with!!
Best track ever made? YES.
Breaks remix has been done but was only released on the video game soundtrack Kinetica http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsfS...feature=related
The grayed out summer mix is hands down the best remix of any song ever made in EDM in my opinion. I cried like a girl in 2004 nocturnal wonderland Oakey dropped this in front of like 10k people. EPIC.
I just want to say again that the Grayed out summer mix will never, ever ever, never ever be beaten.
the only thing I hate about this tune is the male vocal. There is something about male vocals in dance music that makes it utterly unappealing to me. I suppose that isn't always true, I don't mind some rap vocals in electro as it is more percussive but the wailing male singer just sounds so out of place in dance.
and the best dance song ever made is Ferry's Out of the Blue.
The vocals are amazing you're high on the wrong drugs
"Still I felt so right
Guess I've never known before"
Gooooooosebumps....
Breaks sounds good, would like to hear what Stefan Anion, Derek Howell or Aeron Aether could do with the track.

Ambient breaks. I can totally feel it, something like Icehouse - Don't Believe Anymore (Ivan Gough & Colin Snape Remix). The pad in Piledriver just flows, I think taking the ambient route would really make that flow shine.
Assuming you're getting several remixes going, I'd probably go for one sophisticated proggy breaks remix, one straight forward prog trance ASOT type thing, one very bangy electro remix and one slightly more minimal tech house remix... That would cover most genres well IMO.
I'd be keen for a crack at it, mine would probably be more on the techy side...
Fair play in getting the rights to this. To be fair this track was soooo huge at the time, so I agree its one of those tracks that cant be beat with a remix in the same genre.
Breaks is a good call. That said go with what ever works man same genre different genre, what ever. Its going to get alot of attention when released with remixes so it has to be the bomb, no excuses lol, people will be taking note of the remixers so your time to shine, no pressure ;P. Good luck.
If you are looking for breaks look at burufunk http://www.myspace.com/burufunkmusic
His tracks are very nice.
trying to nail the patch for the melody pad-like sound you hear start at the very beginning of the grayed out summer mix. Trying to get it nailed down in my Virus and having a bit of trouble.
*edit
Some sort of phased saw pad thing....pattern follows the bassline, lots of release. Maybe 2 pads going one that distinct pattern another supporting?
Goodluck Stephen!
Ambient - I'm ignorant on it - but does anyone buy it apart from yoga teachers? I say this because you've gone to great legnths to remix this so it would be worth making an impact maybe?
Breakbeat - I don't know anyone who's into it - maybe it's popular outside the UK? My personal taste takes me away from breakbeat.
I'd say do a 4/4 progressive version.

The problem with remixing in a genre that is similar to the original is that it will never compare and this will end up as another pointless remix package of a classic that never should have been touched in the 1st place. |
