Read This! Eye Weekly: The beer-tent blues

The beer-tent blues
http://www.eyeweekly.com/music/features/article/98529

quote:
And with the current (Ontario) concert market suffering noticeably this summer, you have to wonder if promoters might already be eager to find new ways to draw in audiences. Its no secret that Toronto festivals have failed to emulate the European model hell, after the downsizing of last years Virgin Fest, we dont have any proper multi-day outdoor music festivals at all this summer.

Seeing the immense success and relatively unproblematic execution of Osheaga (Montreal) first-hand, its hard not to develop a case of festival envy. And while Farkas doesnt think the open licence contributes to the success of Osheaga per se, he does admit that its a huge draw for out-of-towners from Ontario. On the other hand, and possibly sharing in my envious sentiments, Smid thinks the alcohol situation is integral.

I think its part of the puzzle, he says. And I think this is the biggest thing to overcome for festivals to have value to the overall marketplace. Right now, festivals are more of a niche thing; mainstream people dont go to festivals, whereas in Europe and other places they do. Even if you had a commercial artist headlining a festival in Toronto, youd have people who would rather wait two years to see them at the ACC. Thats the biggest detriment to making them work financially. [Otherwise] I think what youre going to get is a B-level festival in an A-level market.

interesting article..

interesting article..

no doubt that our alcohol laws hurt a lot of tourism and business. But what do they care in ontario? The condo dwellers rule here and thats all that counts sadly.

The nanny state that so many people here demand is hard at work!

I saw all of that first hand at V fest 2 years ago, such a pain in the ass.

That's why nobody goes to more of these festivals here.

This quote right here proves how Ontarions DO NOT know how to party compared to Europeans and the rest of the world. They would rather party somewhere they know and are comfortable with. The others like the idea of going somewhere different or outdoors. If you want to seriously party, don't do it in Canada! lol

EDIT: after reading the article I found out the culprit for this problem is AGCO and their lack of understanding of how to manage a bar.

It's the liquor CONTROL board of ontario. It's what they do best.

More so this than the people here.

People here go to any party available only b/c there is no other option...but there is only so much they can take when it comes to security BS, being segregated into specific areas etc before people stop going. Hence the attendance records for V fest last year (or the year before...)

I disagree with that statement! (not your statement, the quote you posted). lol I'd much rather go to a festival with a commercial headliner than going to see them at a concert hall.

So would I.

I'd say what keeps people annoyed a lot of the time is the segregation part (says in the article) and also how it ends so early.

I mean the Toronto Islands rock, why not have something PROPER there?

until we get fresh thinking politicians in office who arent driven by a condo agenda, we arent going to see much happen in toronto. Unless it involves a big concrete box.
