Adultnapper featuring Big Bully - Hazy Lazy EP [Culprit]
Adultnapper featuring Big Bully - Hazy Lazy EP by culprits
vinyl on August 25th
digital on September 20th
Underground house and techno veteran Francis Harris, aka Adultnapper, and LA born and raised, Big Bully, are welcomed into the Culprit fold for the labels ninth release. Culprit delivers another unique first on these two tracks with the pairing of Adultnapper and Big Bully, a collaboration that unites two artists with extensive musical pedigrees.
Adultnapper is hard to pin down. He is at once a NYC mixologist, globe-trotting DJ, philosopher, studio geek, former political radical and comic-book character. He has released on Dirt Crew, Mule, Superfreq, Poker Flat, Audiomatique and his own label, Ransom Note. He has also headed into the studio with now LA-based Mr C, to partner and co-create the Sycophant Slags. Its an alias highly suited to Adultnapper, who has always steered clear of following a trendy path, for one more idiosyncratic, but no doubt closer to his heart. Good thing he did.
Born and raised in LA, but now living in Brooklyn, Big Bully (Dawson Baca) is a producer, musician, DJ and vocalist who blends streetwise flavor and techno sophistication in his musical output. His vocal prowess has seen him record with Dinky, Jay Haze/Fuck Pony, [a]ppendics.shuffle (Ken Gibson), Samim and others, with work appearing on Get Physical, Esperanza, Circus Company to name but a few.
Though both Big Bully and Adultnapper have often been associated with moodier and darker sounds in their careers, its very clear that both artists have more than one side to their musical personalities. On this release Adultnapper gets deeper and funkier than you may have heard him before, while maintaining his immaculate production values and commitment to the dancefloor.
The two tracks offer contrasting elements. The title track is Adultnapper channeling the vibe of LA sunset-lit early evenings, where burnished lazy days meet the rising energy of Hollywoods sultry nightlife. Strutting self-assured percussion, layers of deep and moody chords, underpinned by a swinging bassline and the shimmering breathy vocals of Big Bully. This is Adultnapper stretching his rich sonic palette with sounds inspired by LA s natural environment and almost mystical presence.
'Lie To Me is a more propulsive counterpart to the A side. This is Los Angeles at night, sexy and sinister, with a sense of nocturnal purpose. A great warbling bassline moves the track throughout. The darker mid-tempo groove is a perfect foil for Big Bully's slinky, slithering vocal.
Both of these are fucking sexy in a dark way.

hmmm, not my cup of tea at all.
"Lie To Me" sounds awesome.
I like that bassline in "Lie To Me". Reminds me of the bassline in DJ Vibe - I'll Take You
Dare I say the sexiest Culprit release to date?
These might need to grow on me.
Niiice one, Mr. Sloe!
Francis let me hear this release in January.
I creamed myself after hearing "Lie To Me"
Francis is a top producer who has been changing things up a bit lately and we are happy to grab these from him - they are a bit funkier and deeper, with LA's Big Bully giving the tracks a lot of personality
The release comes out on vinyl first, next week, with digital to follow in 3 weeks.
Vinyl releases are still very important, certainly not for economic reasons as making money on them is exceptionally difficult. But investing in physical, tangible medium, the one that has and always will have a cult following gives a young label extra weight.
it forces us to consider our releases and schedule more carefully. Releasing vinyl 3 or 4 weeks before digital is a necessity, to give it a better chance in the market place and to reward those few who buy it for spending that extra bit of cash by having a month-long exclusive.
that little diatribe aside...
the EP has been getting good support from a nice cross-selection of DJs:
Mr. C (of course
); Ewan Pearson, Anthony Collins ("Hazy Lazy is super cool"); Jimpster ("lie to Me is amazing! love it"); Mark Henning; DJ Three ("Lie To Me" has been doing damage"); Funk D'Void; Doc Martin ("Both tracks are excellente!"); Slam; Danny Howells ("Francis never ceases to amaze - nuff respect"); Bruno Pronsato ("My Boys turning up the heat, love these cuts"); Kate Simko; Sebo K ("Great release. especially lie to me!"); Meat; Marc Ashken; Groove Armada; Silicone SoulSubb-an; Mat Playford; Miss Jools ("Beautiful Ep,,lie to me is simply a hypnotic timeless piece of music, thanks!"); Geddes; Jet Project; Buckley...
also Richie Hawtin, Dubfire and Danny Tenaglia....
jus' kiddin'

Resident Advisor review:
Ibiza Voice Review
This is out now. I have to wait till I get paid on tuesday to pick it up. The bassline in Lie To Me is so defiant. Glad to see producers making beats outside the normal template. A breath of weird, but fresh air.
thank you for the feedback, Mark...
this is indeed out on vinyl now...in the US Halcyon (NYC) and Amoeba (LA) will carry it, trying to get it into Turntable Lab too

Very solid sounds. Lie To Me is great. Nice quirky percussion, deep lush pads, crisp his, smooth vocals, overall a great track.
