Position of Amp or warmer

Hey,

I like to use warmers and amp simulators to some of the VSTI's to add a bit of ambience to the sound or realism. Im wondering where is the correct place to position the effect?

Before or after reverb or delays? I usually have the compressor as the last in the chain of any sound. Also do ye recommend any warmers that add depth to synths?

At the moment i use voxengo tapebus..

I use Cubase 5

thanks

I know you don't want to hear this but.....it all depends.

For instance, Personally, I don't generally use compressors after a reverb (except in a mastering situation but that's a different case) as for me the point of the reverb is to give space and a compressor just squashes it down or at least dulls it.

The only time I do have a comp after the reverb is when I'm going for that specific effect (i.e. you can hear the reverb being pumped) but that is fairly rarely.

So for me, I would use a warmer before the reverb as I want those tonal characteristics carried through the reverb FX. I suppose however there also might be a situation where a reverb may sound slightly cold so a warming plug after it could be used but I have found that things start to get muddy when you do it that way (reverb is adding tail and diffusion and then the warmer is effectively distorting that signal).

I don't use warmers that often but when I do I reach for the PSP vintage warmer and one of the waves plugs(I forget which).
