Biggest development in video games in the past 10 years?

I'd say dynamic shadows.

pre-doom3 era vs doom 3 was night and day.

almost?

QuakeLive is very much like Q3 imo

Perhaps not the biggest development, but goddamn - high-capacity discs/DVDs.

Does anyone remember the first Baldur's Gate? Like 7 fucking discs? Disc swapping throughout the game??? Urgh1hjsdhf!

And fuck forbid if just ONE of those discs was scratched or somehow damaged.

Now games seem to fit on 1 dvd. Set up installation, walk away for 10 minutes, come back, it's done.

The biggest development in games has to be the dumbing down that goes on so that they can be marketed to the largest possible audience. Nobody said that the biggest thing to happen should or would be a good thing.

The replacement of creativity by better graphics.

Source game engine.. very scalable to all systems..realistic lighting, physics.. Debuted with HL2 and is still being used in Left 4 Dead 1 + 2, TF2, etc.

Wait till u see id's id Tech 5 engine. If you happened to see some gameplay of Rage at E3/Comic con on the 360, u would think it was a pc running the game. Can't wait till this one comes out and we get more games running on this beast.

I agree wholeheartedly.

Besides that, I'd have to say the physics. Throwing in a nade in the office in counter strike: source for example with things flying all over the place is epic!

i remember trying to download the latest version of directx (like, 2.0 or 4.0?) with my old 33.6kbps modem just to play a demo version of diablo on windows 95.. sigh, those were the days.

The mass exodus of developers to handhelds. Also, new control methods (DS touchscreen, Wii motion controls).
