rekorbox slows down Mac???

Hi there everyone. I'm not sure if this is actually true, but I just installed rekordbox on my MacBook Pro yesterday and went through and analyzed approximately 4,500+ MP3s. That process took literally all day. After that was done I restarted my Mac and have found that ever since I installed rekordbox my Mac has been EXTREMELY slow compared to just 24 hours prior.

Some things I'm noticing are:

- Bootup of the MBP takes around 40-50 seconds (used to take half that).
- I'll click on Safari to open it (for example) and that takes a few seconds longer.
- I'll click on a menu within Safari (History for example) and it takes 3 seconds just to show the menu (and I reset Safari yesterday so there should be no History to show).

Is this a documented thing? Are they two even related (my computer slowing down after installing rekordbox and restarting)? I didn't change anything else in my computer so that's the only thing I've been able to link to the slowdown.

Thanks for reading. Would love to hear about other people's experiences.

Cheers,
Keith

i got recordbox on my mac and everythings fine, no problems here

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-13-2010 13:50:

odd. cheers for the quick response.

rekordbox doesn't initiate during bootup or run in the background of OS X by any default or anything, right?

ooh i wouldn't know, try reinstallng and see if that helps

Try repairing disk permissions, and do it on all your disks. And don't forget to run system update as well - there could be some patches needed to optimise the system.

^will try this out, thx!

What about re-installing Rekorbox on an external hard drive. One thing I've noticed especially with large software, if I install onto the internal it seems to slow down the processor. Once on an external the speed seems to come back.

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-15-2010 22:28:

Repair permissions didn't work, unfortunately. Really odd!

Posted by Brandt Slater on Aug-15-2010 22:38:

Are you referring to the Mac repair disk? That is odd, especially with no permission. Unless your Mac isn't reconizing certain programs as genuine software. Ran into this a couple of times.

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-16-2010 06:12:

i did repair permissions in disk utility.

i've never had a problem with non-genuine software (i buy all my software). how would i know if my system thinks it's non-genuine and is having a problem with it?

Posted by n3lly on Aug-16-2010 12:19:

If it were me.

I'd do a fresh install.

I know it's a pain in the ass but I'd copy my music over and any other files i wanted to save and start fresh.

Nice way to get everything running as fast as possible again.

From what i can remember you let Itunes take care of your music collection anyway don't you? Do backing up music and restoring wont be that much hassle.

Just saves trying to find out what/why stuff's slowing down.

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-16-2010 14:17:

yup mate i do use itunes to manage all my music.

thing is i did a fresh install last month, lol. so there really should not be any clutter.

may be time to just bite the bullet and order a new macbook pro!

One possibility is that your hard drive (or some other component) is dying. Unrelated to Rekordbox, but just happened the same time you installed it.

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-16-2010 18:53:

Quite true... Although I just put a new hard drive in (hence the fresh install). Who knows... Just found it odd this happened post rekirdbox!

OK need some more details:

We you tried running repair permissions in disk utility, please be specific about what woulnd't work.

Are you saying it ran the permission repair but it didn't change anything or are you saying disk utility wouldn't run?

If it is the latter (disk util won't run), then I know what your problem is:

In Snow leopard, the original OSX version of disk utility does not work (at all). If you use finder and search for disk utility you'll see two versions...one works and one doesn't.

Find the one that does and use it on all disks.

Now if disk util will open but won't work on you're drive then the new drive you just installed has a problem. Did you install it yourself?

And by the way, you need to run repair permissions after a fresh install because you've probably installed a bunch of third party programs which can mess with permissions. It seems like rekordbox messed with them as well.

Let me know what happens....

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-16-2010 19:39:

Rann,

Sorry should have been more specific. I ran Disk Utility and Repair Permissions repaired a but load of permissions. What I meant by didn't work was that this didn't change my performance issues at all.

Posted by DJ RANN on Aug-16-2010 19:49:

Got it - have you run OSX system update recently?

If not, then do it, reboot, then repair disk permissions again.

Also what version of rekordbox are you running?

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-16-2010 19:53:

Yup ran it before installing rekirdbox so I was all up to date, apple software wise. Installed rekirdbox 1.3.0.

Yes, that's the latest rekord box - do me a favor, try running system update again. Sometimes you have to run it after an install of a new program as that's the only way it can identify if there's a patch update available. (System update also checks for patches for specific software and drivers, not just the OS).

Found no updates

Posted by DJ RANN on Aug-16-2010 20:07:

hmmmm - that's a weird problem then.

OK, so back to the start:

what mac it is?

What OSX version?

How many drives (int and ext)?

Which drive is your itunes library on?

Where is rokord box installed?

MacBook Pro 2.4 Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM
500 GB internal hard drive (just that drive, no external)
10.6.4
iTunes and rekordbox are both installed in default locations (and only one user on os x)

weirdest problem...

Have you tried uninstalling Rekordbox and seeing if the mac responds better without it on your system?

I have the exact same mac and although it's nearly 30months (i'm assuming yours is around the same age). Mine is still healthy and running perfectly. Yours should do as well.

Uninstall the program. See if things speed up. If they do, we can blame Rekordbox. If they don't. I have a feeling something else has gone wrong during the installation.

Although you did a fresh install of your system, a month ago you say. I'd still be tempted to go through the process again. Format, reinstall OS then install Rekordbox and then the rest of your programs.

I know it's a pain in the ass, but it'll take you the guts of 2-5 hours but save you the lazy option of buying a new mac

Posted by keithos27 on Aug-17-2010 01:01:

i hear ya guys but getting my system up to snuff takes a lot longer than 2-5 hours... mobileme, itunes libraries, iphoto libraries, etc, etc...

i'm *this* close to getting a new MBP (mine is almost 48 months old!) so if/when i do make the new purchase, and i've transfered all my files, i'll try the un-install/re-install option and see if that solves it. i have a feeling it wont, though.

also, now that i've gone through the pain staking process of having rekordbox analyze 4500+ files, do i ever have to have it do that again? is that something that is stored in a database, or something that is stored in each mp3 file individually?

cheers guys for all the help!

What I meant by that is some second, and third party software (legit software) sometimes doesn't play nice with a computer. For example when Mac released Safari for Windows, my pc's didn't like it at all. Of course, it was the first version, and maybe the newer versions are better.

That's weird you're still having the performance issue even after all that. I wonder if your copy of Rekorbox is bad.
