How to make intros & sample for mix.

Lately I have seen every DJ use a Intro for their mix/podcast and was wondering how to make those. By intro I mean intro like in a state of trance ie [b]"3 2 1 switching to full power, state of trance connection established"[\b] and on and on.

I would also like to know howthe samples like [b]this is a state of trance [\b] are done??


I know my question sounds lame, but this does help to personalise the mix even further.

You have to be creative. Those intros are made in million dollar studios using the best equipment available. The cheapest way to get your voice to sound robotic would be with software I'm sure some1 will chime in. And launching the samples during a set... I use serato and it has a sample launcher in it. You could easily launch samples in ableton and traktor too. Armin uses ableton for his broadcast but not for his live performances.

Also another cheap way to get cool vocals is with one of those digitech vocal effect pedals

Well I know AvB uses Ableton for ASOTs and not for his live performances, and thanks a lot for enlightening me with rest of the post.
No offence, but I have heard so many podcasts now, that what you said about studios seems a little far-fetched. I mean there are guys who just do these podcasts because they like trance and are no-way near pro DJs; but they also have those cool intro's. I dont know how though (their Creativity, may be).

But anyways I will try to sample my own voice and some SCi-Fi movies may be.
Thanks for the post again. I would love to see more information on this though.

I could be wrong, but most of the intros sound as simple as vocoders+echoes/reverb+whatever other filter you want. I hardly think you need a million dollar studio to make most of these intros.

Here is one i did for the headliner of a rave in 2002

The rave was called something apocalyptic like Contact of something and I basically used that as a theme. Downloaded a bunch of sample cds and sort of did the foley work as I imagined people coming out of a spaceship to a new world. There is a low pad and lfo synth with really slow modulation. That speeds up and I separate the my voice ( would of used a girl but no girlfriend at the time) and then I used a sample library that has a computer count down.

took about 2 days to do but the hard part was just finding the right samples for the foley.It is pretty epic but it was for a big rave and the crowd was young I guess I just kept that in mind. My least favourite part is the voice but I hate the sound of my own voice so not much I can do about that.

Bro that was really fucking impressive. And maybe you don't like your voice but it worked better than a lot of voices I can think of lol.

I'm actually suprised you did that in only 2 days, I mean it sounds simple at first glance but its got a lot of intricate random placement that gels together cohesively. And thats not an easy thing to do.

My main question though is a particular sound in that sample that I've always been obsessed with. I sometimes hear it underlying pads and it adds so much tension in the background. But that screeching/bending metal sound is that just a sine wave? How do you get it to sound so tense? What are you modulating to do that? It sounds like pitch but it can't be that simple, because pitch modulation will not result in that type of tension. What else is going on I really would love to know how to do that sound?

Either way really impressive work. We got off on a bad foot at one point but I've prob learned more from you than any other producer here tbo (and I promise I'm not bribing you with compliments lol).

didnt listen but are you talking about the overused oil cans sample in omnisphere? Omni ripped it from somewhere else, as I've heard it as far back as 99. (BT - Flaming June (PVD Remix) - It's in pretty much every cheesy scary movie. I'd stay away from that sound if you care about originality. It's probably the most popular sound sample ever used. For the record I believe it's just a metal saw grinding with velocity automation going up and then down along with the metal saw speeding up/down with the velocity automation. It sounds like a real recording to me but could just be some clever lfo/garbage noise work.

Waterphone! It actually is a real instrument and despite being a little overused in horror films, it can sound really cool if it is in the background.I love the waterphone. And thanks for the compliments. As far as what is going on it is rather simple. PRetty sure there is a choir backing up the strings in unison. There is the jupiter pad that provides the bass , the root note is also the same. I just change from a minor chord to an augmented on the same root which gives it that weird tension. Then the lfo synth is just a virus detuned saw patch that speeds up, I speed up the heart beats at the end. The ship sounds were from sound ideas set. Mechanical sounds or something like that. The sound effects between the voice are from Jeff Thomans Killahertz collection. Something like that made for radio producers. I suppose i found it easier to do because the goal was quite clear and the theme limited the possibilities. Much harder to just start a tune from scratch with no limitations. I basically just started with the low pad, then thought, hmmm high kids would like heart beats, then thought, ya gas masks, then the alien theme matched the rave theme and after that it was a matter of finding the samples.I basically thought to myself, If I was 16 tripping on E, what would I find cool.

can pretty much guarantee that everything you hear in omnisphere was recorded by them.

the simple answer be if you have a daw and had a idea of how to use it think of something you would like to open a set with and try and make it.

if you dont have a daw then find someone who can make one for you
