Can you dance ?
I sometimes hear music by producers and wonder how in the world could you dance to this other than flail your arms which makes me think too many producers just don't know how to dance and make shit dance music. Just curious actually. Maybe you guys don't need mixing lessons but rather some dance lessons. Maybe that is why some genres are sucking hard right now. Too many pasty white kids with no sense of rhythm trying to write music for an environment they don't understand.
Genres evolve and change over time, dude. Trance isn't specifically made to be danced to anymore.
My dancing resembles this:
Sweet fancy Moses!
lol so why is everyone so concerned about selling their shit on dj distribution websites. I honestly don't see the point of EDM not being danced to. That is the problem with the genre is that it has turned into lame soft adult contemporary music for pregnant mothers to do yoga to. There was a time when trance had balls.
agreed.
a dj who doesnt dance is like an author who doesnt read.
or in this case a producer who makes dance music.

| Originally posted by Eric J Look at where trance gets played nowadays. Huge festivals with tens of thousands of people. All they really do is jump up in the air and raise their hands, there really isn't any dancing going on. There is not that sense of intimacy that you get when playing a small club with just a few hundred people which, ironically, is usually where the dancing takes place. You rarely see anyone playing trance in a small club setting anymore. In some ways trance has become the arena rock of dance music. I hated playing festivals back in the day for exactly that reason. In a club you get a sense of connection with the audience, but those festivals with thousands upon thousands of people are just too impersonal. I've heard other veteran DJ's in genres other than trance voice these very same concerns. |
I will paypal you 50$ for that video.
I move to it and if I can move to it, I can see people dancing to it. I don't, however, think that "dance" music is strictly meant for dancing and I think the crap that is made strictly for dancing is mostly hack-stain pap.
lol this is nothing but old farts saying trance music is dead because it doesn't sound like it did 10-15 years ago. I'm pretty sure someone who grows up listening to classic rock might frown upon, say, Muse or Sigur Ros, but it's still good music even if it's not "about" the same things classic rock used to represent.
Trance =/= dance music. Get over it.
I tend to dance more when music is not around, and I think thats because the rhythm in my head is just stronger than most music lol.
The problem is once that rhythm goes into a sequencer it usually dies rather fast.
Whenever I make a track or record a set my overwhelming thought is, does this make me want to jack my body?
If it doesn't it gets binned.
remember, it's called EDM. Guess what the D stands for.
The vast majority of Festivals are cack and my favourite performances from DJ's are when they are in an intimate setting not massive rooms, preferably a small black room, packed with people (jacking) with maybe a strobe (if you're very lucky).
EDIT: hey when the fuck did flash embeds get enabled in the prod forum!!!!!

Since there are no clubs or "raves" here we usually just dance at my apartment with my gf. Both with headphones on. And in the dark. It's fun. It's been a year since I was at a gig, should get traveling soon to get to know eu clubs
but people who dance the most at gigs (in Finland), I say 50 % of them are really fucking high on something since they could never dance sober, especially if someone sees them do it.
If you have the right settings, do you go clubbing weekly? I know I would if there were any clubs around.
Yeah, many many threads in music discussion about the best trance to give birth to and shit. Not sure if that's really what its about. To me, dance music is best at home in clubs or at outdoor raves, or in dusty warehouses. Dance music is NOT at home anywhere you don't have room to spin around in circles while the pretty lights make your brain fizzy.
I honestly think that in all areas of EDM, the balance has been lost. There is now a huge split between ambient electronic and dance music, which I don't think occurred previously. Its like there's now a huge split between four on the floor and broken beat genres, and a huge split between drum and bass genres (over 160 BPM) and house based genres (under 140).
The net result is less music that blurs boundaries, more DJ sets that just find a groove and safely stick with it, more music that all sound the same. Theres no contrast in dance music anymore. I don't think ALL trance should be danceable, but I don't think that DJs should only play really dancey stuff either. The odd ambient track in a dance set is part of the beauty IMO.
PS
I go out 1-3 times a week (used to be 4 times/week a year ago) and like to dance, which isn't to say I'm good at it.
We should get a dance thread specifically made for posting videos of sweet moves. I could benefit from it, since my dancing looks like I'm just running stationary lol.
I cannot dance at all.

just move to the rhythm.
my one real talent as a producer is rhythm so the importance in a good bassline/groove pattern is there. but i dont hit the clubs these days so my shit tends to lead to more home listening. so its fair to say if you dont make shit geard for the clubs or cant make music for the clubs then the chances of a dj playing your work is slim
so you think yo can dance TA edition. Really I just wanted someone to take the bait and post a silly video of themselves doing gay liquid shit like they've gone back in time when glowsticks were cool.
'cause you like watching in such a different manner than I do.
