Cats and Dogs in China - WTF Story of the Day

The haunting sound of animal wailing fills the air.

Dogs are crammed so tightly together into tiny metal cages they cannot even bark. Yards away the blood-spattered carcasses of others lie on the ground. Cages of dogs and cats - some of them bred as domestic pets - are piled high and when an animal is chosen for sale it is bludgeoned with an iron bar until it is close to death before, being handed over to the purchaser.

"The customers want fresh 'live' meat," said Huang Lu Sheng, one of the stallholders. "When the dog dies slowly there is much more flavour in the meat. Some customers want the dog half-dead. Then the taste is very strong and they can prove to their customers that the meat is really fresh. I do not care about the dog suffering. It is only to eat and the customer is the one that chooses how it should die. But most customers actually want the dog beaten to death and put in a plastic bag. It's easier to carry like that."

This is apparently the latest delicacy.

Some say it's not real, but I really wouldn't be surprised if it is. They're fucking nuts.

It's false, no human society eats human flesh except in very special circumstances (such as eating the flesh of an honoured enemy).

But, I'm actually intrigued and wondering if anyone that thinks this is cruel is also against the consumption of regular meat under similar circumstances. Mind you, the cute "kill-the-cow-with-a-taser" method is not practised worldwide.

Cats and dogs are largely carnivores - you shouldn't eat meat that eats other meat. It's not traditional!

I'll bet you drink period blood and your own urine when it suits you, eh, Lira? Damn those taboos - I'll do what I want because I'm an individual!

Wait, what?!

No, it's just that whenever there's a thread about vegetarians everyone is quick to point out how natural it is to eat meat and whatnot, but then when some people you don't know devour those lovely animals we keep as pets then it's suddenly wrong.

My diet hardly makes me an individual

That's fucking disgusting. Even if it's fake, its just gross.

actually, i remember one of my biology teachers saying that the most nutrituous meat to eat is human meant. You have all the nutrients required in the body as it is a body similar to yours. IT would probably be good to eat it in small portions however. I think i would need a source for this though as hearsay from a teacher isnt really so reassuring.

So by this token, carnivore meat is probably more nutrient rich then herbivore meat. i would asume though with the higher amount of protein, would come high amounts of cholesterol!.

I hope Tibet stops the whole "peaceful protest" bullshit and gets ahold of some nukes.

The problem with eating carnivores is that they tend to be very low in fat, and are extremely chewy/stringy. Ever tried bald eagle? Fucking terrible - I had to spit it out!

It's easy: the 'natural' debate is utter horseshit.

I hate when people say "it's all natural." I then tell them to throw themselves into poison ivy, citing that that too is all natural.

Yeah, 'natural' is one of the vaguest concepts humans have conceived of, at least by way of societal definition. What's natural and what isn't will generally vary drastically from person to person: we could just as well say that anything we do is 'natural' because we are derivative of nature, right? But people who are typically trying to use 'natural' as some sort of point in their case are usually the most exclusive and judgmental in this regard.

Hey man, the Chinese practicing female infanticide is natural, just respect their culture and stuff man, peace and love, etc.

Precisely, though there's a lot more going on in this debate. "We need protein that you can only get from meat" and stuff of that sort. I don't mind it when people imagine they can't live without meat in order to survive... but I don't understand why it's suddenly cool to eat cows but cruel to nom cats.

Nope, eating Human meat is bad juju due to the risk of illness that comes about through eating one's own species.. basically every disease that afflicts humans will be found in some humans..every one of these diseases is one we can catch, eating people is a sure-fire way to catch them.

Also - laughing sickness, similar to mad cow, and it afflicts cannibals.

It's truly not; it's just disgusting to have a nation of over a billion citizens with no animal rights laws to speak of and seemingly no effort to control the population of stray animals in the inner cities whatsoever. You are focusing on the wrong part of this "debate" - China is a fucking grot-bin that is in no way helped by it's retarded Government that focuses only on numbers rather than real, humanistic concerns. It is the same sort of virus that easily infects other developed nations, but to a far more extreme degree of misplaced restriction.

Actually, I don't have a cat

But the same argument could be made if I had a pet calf. Right?

No, I do think that's a sad state of affairs, don't get me wrong. But, I'm willing to bet we'd get a far more consistent amount of cynical replies if the original poster drew our attention to how violently cows and pigs are killed in some other countries. Wouldn't animal rights apply to herbivores as well?

Yes.
To be honest I wouldn't want ANY animal to suffer, if they're being killed to end up on my plate, I'd want it done as swiftly and painlessly as possible. What these morons are doing is barbaric.

That's very nice, you smug fuck. I'm well aware of your argument, it's simply not the same.

The conditions that these cats and dogs are kept under are DEPLORABLE. Do you know this word and its many variants? It's not the same thing because in most developed countries there exist laws that strictly stipulate their commerce as well as execution and generally speaking, it's as swift and efficient as possible. Until then, cows live a life of grazing with one another in the sun and green grass; just as they would opt to do had no human lorded over them.

Indeed, it is in a slaughterhouse's best interest to keep things as sterile and quick as possible so as to minimize the chances of viral infection and diseases, as well as the cleanup process and re-purpose/packaging. I've seen it myself - for cows, there is a device called a "knocker"; it's a foot-long, steel spike that penetrates their skull in less than a second and drops them before they even know a bit of pain. They are cut up after they are fully dead because this minimizes the chances of their thrashing around and damaging anything/anyone.

In China, there exist no laws to restrict the commerce of animal processing. Indeed, the Chinese Government itself hires people to go into the streets and beat stray dogs to death so that they can be skinned or eaten for a paltry price, all in the interest of "public health". But that's for the lucky ones; many dogs and cats are corralled into cages as full as they can stuff them, left in the sun and weather for exposure, going insane from fright and squalid conditions of starvation and physical abuse, several of them still having collars on because they were simply plucked from the streets or even people's homes due to the complete lack of governmental ordinance and management of the particular industry.

But don't get me wrong, I would say the chicken processing industry has a history of being quite similar - and indeed, the US saw a recent, massive egg recall because these same conditions were so mismanaged, so horrible, and so lacking in governmental oversight that people were put in harm as well. How long before the almost completely unrestricted situation in China results in a communicable disease so lethal that nobody left remembers Communism?

I'm not saying everyone is cruel to the poor animals, but it's not always nice and cute like that. The Mad Cow Disease did break out for a reason...

I know these exist.

Which, I agree, is a shame.

Hmm... I don't think it's going to be this grave but, yeah, this is bound to happen any time soon
