Hello! collab vocab help ?

hey guys// so im doing my first collaboration with another artist and were producing a song.

my job is to make the melody and i made a few melodies and finally he liked one of them. now he told me to "work on some counter melodies, to lead into the full melody, once we get those, then you can send me the midi and ill do my thing to it."

i feel dumb asking HIM what he means by countermelody.. so what does he want me to do?

I don't think your friend knows what a countermelody is. A countermelody doesn't "lead up to" the main melody, it plays along with it simultaneously, typically moving when the main melody is standing still, and vice versa. It's a melody unto itself, but is subordinate to the main melody.
