Derek Sivers: keep your goals to yourself

http://www.ted.com/talks/derek_sive...o_yourself.html

Summary: don't talk about your goals

Posted by theterran on Sep-07-2010 05:37:

My goal is to keep my goals to myself from now on.

And your ideas...cuz they get stolen rather fast...

My goal is to get some nice remix work soon...

Another goal...is to sign some music to a label within the next 3 months.

Those are kinda lofty goals...lets see if they happen.

I've always thought that. Not that I always keep my mouth shout but generally I dont tell people stuff. I see it as people also have expectations of you and if you dont reach those goals, well it looks not good. Good video though.

Three minutes of my life that I'll never get back. Seriously, people, if you are living your lives by the wisdom of guys on internet videos, telling or not telling people your goals is not your problem. An above-average high school student could tear this moron's hypothesis to shreds fifteen different ways.

+1 cryo...

another thing ive been meaning to get off my chest towards forum members, stop imposing rules.... "dont put distortion on that, dont put reverb on this" please dont do that. /rant

Why are you upset? What did you learn that that Tony Robbin's seminar that you aren't tell us?

hmm this might hold some truth, for me i have a lot of goals, but its not that i really keep them to myself, its more so i just dont boast about anything, and i guess im just the type of person who keeps to himself, although i wish i didnt.

i know a 27 year old hip hop producer who talks about making it big all the time and i admirer that, even though he doesnt even know how to open effects in fl studio yet.

I wish I had goals. My ball keeps going to the freeway when I kick it around.

fail! lol

don't feel like watching this, can someone summarize what is this good for?

when i started making music, my goal was to make a song that will sound good to me and OK to someone who doesn't know anything about edm. that was just way to easy.

now i want to make a song that will sound good to an experienced producer. it seems impossible

Don't talk about the goal like you've already reached it so that you don't get that social satisfaction of of reaching it.

No: "I want to be the next Tiesto and have millions of people worship me!"

Yes: "I want to work on getting that Tiesto sound."

LOL Maybe not the best example, but I hope you get the idea.

2011 goal is to be a bigger year than 2010 and 2009 Production and Remix wise, and maybe some DJ gigs here and there. Future is bright baby...Snowballin.

my goal is to have HUGE speakers at some point. please dont steal.

edit: seriously though. goals? wtf is that? the road is the goal.

It's pretty funny everyone comes here announcing their goals given the thread title...

Posted by MrJiveBoJingles on Sep-08-2010 14:56:

I have always been a bit reluctant to share goals, mainly because if I tell other people what I am doing, I think I will start taking into account how they will respond to it, rather than following my instincts. My best results come from making what I like, not trying to make what I think other people might like. Of course, those two goals are not totally contradictory, but they can sometimes pull me in opposite directions.
