(REVIEW) Electric Zoo Day 1
honestly, who the fuck booked major lazer? seriously? worst dj i have ever seen in my life. guy was literally playing regeton, hiphop, rap..
atb? wow guy did major trainwrecks.
these are the 2 guys you picked over pvd? must be the joke of the century.
afrojack? homo got on the mic after markus schulz set and said "i'm glad you guys like trance but i'm not playing that shit"
RICHIE HAWTIN
SET OF THE DAY. i went over to see axwell and my eyes were closing cause i was dead tired. i actually told ryan i wanted to leave. went over to see richie hawtin instead, i couldn't stop dancing.
PACO OSUNA was also amazing
so was MARKUS SCHULZ. it's about time markus gets #1 on dj mag even tho it doesn't mean anything. guy is the only dj out there who doesn't whore out his own productions and actually plays trance.
i agree
major lazer-fail
chem bros-mehhhh
pretty lights- wtf uber fail
ATB- was it his first time dj'ing? Yea I was inline for kaskade signing session and wow wtf.
I said this before in the other EZ thread RICHIE HAWTIN
I've been converted to a believer. Im so pissed i forgot about reboot...
Also WTF why didnt they put lasers in the Hilltop tent, and wtf only the lasers turned on for chem bros and wack lights?
Kcuf the led's I want Lasers!!
My sets of the day were Gareth, Gareth and Gareth Emery.
period.
will try to meet up with everyone I did not meet up with today tomorrow.
short review:
definitely better organized, more vendors, stages are a complete upgrade from last year and I cant complain about food vendor/beer prices.
only thing that I thought was off at points was the sound at main stage having low volume. crank that volume up its a festival!
thats it for now.
those going tomorrow you are in for an experience!
how much are the brews this year?
Coors light 8
Grolsch 9
Blue moon 9
Redbull 6
Water 3
I could have smuggled a bottle of vodka with no prpblem they barely checked my bag at all i think i might try it on sunday its just too much for beer
And yeah some major train wrecks there especially on main stage
Benni ennassi was great though so was fake blood and rusko these guys just killed it
From what I could tell, Gareth Emery had the set of the day along with Markus and Richie. I also thought Dirty South was pretty damn good (holler wai)
i really wanted to see pretty lights because they seem like a real dope, chill ass act. but I was not going to miss Richie for anything. It's the only set i stood and watched for longer than 15 minutes. A couple times I tried to walk away from Emery and kept running back.. especially when he put as the rush comes and exposure together. whoa
i was talking to chuckie and he was saying how what he wants to do is get people to realize that dutch house is more than just poppy squeeky ring tone music (those are my words). but you know what I mean.. he wants to eventually expose people to the dutch house underground and not just stuff like riverside. so that was nice to hear.
I was digging that major lazer reggae bumba klatt shit to be honest, I was waiting to talk to someone and i dunno, it was fine imo. And the hype man looked liked Sosa from Belly.
Same thing I posted on Rhythmism:
Paco gets set of the day. Joris was a close 2nd. Kalkbrenner would have been better at a different time of day (preferably darkness), CvS was OK, tried to get a little too creative for my taste with the DnB and hip-hop. Bug plays good stuff, but has yet to blow my mind, and today was no exception. Richie starting off was boring, then kicked in about 20-25 minutes in. I left for the Chemical Bros. at 9:50, they were fun, until they blew something around 9:45 and the sound stopped. It wasn't going into the encore, as the song cut off abruptly. Overall, good day.
BTW, who else that spent the whole day at Sunday School is still having problems breathing?

Definitely a lot more people than last years Saturday. Far less porter potties however, not sure why this is the case? Even so, much props to made for throwing a sick party again. Must say I didn't agree with some of the DJs chosen to headline Mainstage vs. headliners from the tents. I felt Markus had one of the best sets of the day, with Gareth's being slightly better. Gareth's opening was intense, he had so much energy, the crowd was going insane inside that tent haha. The Chemical Brothers were awesome live, not like anything I've really seen before, Electronic Battle Weapon 8 live was reason enough to have them headline I feel lol. There were also a lot of sound/technical errors, at times the music would turn off for almost a minute, even more for the Chemical Brothers. Looking forward to a crazier second day, let me sleep for a few hours.. see you guys tomorrow.

overall was an awesome day i gotta say, but with a couple minor setbacks.....
got there at 12:30 and caught the last hour of joris which was awesome, even got to meet him right after!
Checked out Tom Middleton main stage which was cool, then went over to markus which was decently packed but his set was great, and the soundsystem in that tent was much better then last year.
Joachim Garraud was pretty fun too, i had never seen him live before and even though its mainstream electro it was still fun and it was fun to see him rockin the keytar!
Afrojack was good too, i only stayed for 20 minutes and even though he's very guetta like it was still a fun set.
Claude Von Stroke was sick as usual and his sets are always creative.
Reboot right after was ok, i only stayed for about 20 minutes tho so cant really judge.
Walked back to hilltop arena to find a semi empty tent for Pete Tong, the vibe wasnt really there so i only stayed for a bit but did see jay and euphoria which was nice.
Dirty South main stage was great, good energy, good track selection, and pretty packed too.
Steve Bug's set was pretty good but not mindblowing, i feel like he played better last year.
Kaskade at Hilltop arena was sick! his energy is always great and his set was just relentless! except for when he switched to the wrong track and then spun it back right into the build up of a vocal track and it sounded awful! other than that tho Kaskade played a great set
I stayed for all of 7 minutes of Axwell... his first track was boring, then he decided to have one of his typical swedish house mafia style speeches and so i walked over to sunday school
Richie Hawtin was amazing as usual although he didnt seem prepared in the beginning and kept going to do something under the booth for the first 20 minutes, but then he played a sick sick techno sets as he usually does, and not too heavy on the effects which was a little weird but no big deal. i left at 9:45 cause i couldnt breathe for shit and it was just soooo uncomfortable!
overall tho the production was great and there were soooo many more ppl then last year which is good for made. only complaints were the crazy long bathroom lines but it is what it is when u have that many people around.
can u bring in a small string book bag to hold a sweater or somthing?

Day 1 was a waste, IMO.... Who books Markus and gareth before shit acts they had later on..? Arrived at 2, waited in the worst crowd control line of all time. Fucking 1.5 hours to get in? You gotta be shitting me! Fucking lazy ass staff moving as slow as shit, cops holding up the lines before it, half the lines closed.. I was expecting Love Parade stampede to erupt any second. How that didn't happen, is a pure miracle, as some of you mofos were pushy and rowdy.
Bathroom lines were huge and people were just pissing out in the open... Trully a zoo.
Now, onto the show:
1. Some time ago, ATB was a purveyor of shitty pop that noobs thought was EDM, right on par with Dj Sammy. I must have missed the train on which ATB supposedly rode off into a " cool again" realm. His set was without any flow, full of random tracks, most of which totally sucked. Throw in some shitty pop rock songs, zero transitions or mixing, throw any flow out the window, and you get the gist of his "performance". I couldn't wait for him to get off the stage.
2. The rest of the acts, Dirty South, Benni, even Chems were.... Meh. Tried catching axwell, that was also too hard and techie for my taste. but I think they should have let Major Lazer close the night. I've never seen anyone clear the area so fucking quickly!!!!!! Too funny. Moment they came on, more than half of people ran away from MS.
Lastly... Fucking rapist cabbies!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holly fuck what a bunch of scumbags... To hitch a ride off the fucking island to downtown - quoted as much as $90!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally grabbed one for a "bargain" $55.... And dude grabs two more people to ride along with us. So I figure we split the cost, not a bad deal. ****** drives all 4 of us and then charges these guys an additional $30!!!!! Fucking scum.
So, driving in today. Fuck that.
Overall - disappointment. Made dropped the ball on Saturday.... Hope they fix some shit today.
Day 1 was fucking incredible. Has to of been 20k+ people there easy, prob more like 25k. The hilltop tent was freggin huge and awesome. The sunday school tent was cool as hell how they set it up with the trees. Markus ripped it, CVS ripped it, Reboot ripped it, Hawtin ripped it. Even Chuckie ripped it, I went over there to meet up with people and ended up staying there the entire time. He plays cheesy shit but there was so much energy in there it was amazing. He made the entire crowd do a sit down, it was bonkers, need to see that vid.
Getting in took 20min which sucked, bathroom lines took 15 min which sucked, the dust sucked. But who cares cause it was fucking awesome! Resting up hard for today. I expect more of the same plus bpitch afterwards, fml
Found it, hahaha, nuts!

First of all, ATB was never good lol. I'm not sure why you guys think otherwise. I'm glad the techno guys ripped it up as usual. Burak is starting to see the light
As for the dust, sounds like I would have needed my inhaler. I remember blowing my nose for days last yr and grime was just coming out
I got to the Zoo during prime time hours (4pm). Def was surprised how much more people there were compared to last year. Tents were a major improvement from last year. Getting in was def took longer than expected, even when I did cut half the line. Booze line also took forever. The lines did get shorter around 7pm. Only negative, i think Made needs to somehow improve the way people get to the island, maybe discobuses.
Dirty South was good, could have been better. Performing on a main stage really is an art form, probably why Tiesto, PVD, Ferry, usually perform main stages.
Paco was nuts. Heard a good amount of the set waiting on line for the bathroom.
Chuckie always brings the energy. You will always have fun when he performs.
Axwell was mint. Def needs to come to NYC and do a proper club gig. Got to meet him after his set finished. Thought i had a couple of pics with him on my camera. Turns out it wasn't saved.
I had to use 10 Q-tips to clean the dirt from my ears, and when I took a shower, holy crap, thought I was at a construction zone all day...lol...
Overall, I had a blast, lines sucked for the bathroom. Left at 7:40 to beat the crowds on the Ferry,...saw who I wanted to see, had a nice dinner, and off to bed...cant complain
overall it was a great time i think - with a couple obvious things to complain about that people have already touched on in here.
waiting in line sucked - i got searched and was waiting to have my ticket scanned well before my friends got searched in the adjacent line (probably 15 min before) but they still had to wait 20 minutes for me through the gate because the idiot scanning tix in my line had a faulty reader. instead of recognizing that he just kept trying to scan each persons 10-15 times before taking it to somebody else to scan. so stupid
got in just as markus was coming on, i knew it was ON and i was ready for the day. my friends and i were jumping up and down dancing our way to the front of the tent. such amazing atmosphere up there- i was sweating so much from dancing haha. markus killed it, of course. i'm not really surprised that he played one - last time i saw him, earlier this summer in LA, he played it...and ppl dig it so w/e. towards the end of his set a lot of the guido types were pushing their way to the front of the crowd to wait for afrojack. which was very annoying - because i was surrounded by ppl dancing and then all of the sudden all around a lot of us who were dancing were guys holding beers and just standing there staring at markus, giving ppl looks. when i heard perfect start to come through at the end of his set i went NUTS . so nice. and yeah afrojack making that comment was dumb as hell, i remember hearing that too. i don't understand how so many of the ppl that were loving markus' set instantly got into afrojacks. weird.
was nice meeting a lot of you guys too! i bumped into burak a couple times over the course of the night- and 2 or 3 other guys too but i'm bad w/ names and can't remember ha.
after meetup i went to see claude - he was fantastic, especially the last 30 min of his set or so. i didn't enjoy reboot quite as much but only stayed for the first 15 min- needed to get money out of atm....what a disaster that was.
met up with a bunch of friends i had been dying to see right as paco was coming on...i was so happy to see all of them and we were all dancing while paco was just
so good
hawtin was great too. during his set i was
and maybe a little
at the beginning but he was so fun.
i stayed at pacha's after party til 5 or maybe a bit later. it's only the second time i've been there and, for what it's worth, i kinda hate the place LOL. tons of dudes walking around with no shirts on, all guidod out. most of the same dudes are shameless and relentless, borderline offensive, when it comes to picking up girls - was dancing next to my friends gf while he went to the bathroom and this one guy kept grabbing onto her and she'd scamper over to me and he'd keep trying. but rivera was good, sharam was ok - i only caught a bit of dresden and johnson. kinda expected better so i bounced.
p.s. i wish i had went sunday too!!!
p.p.s. +1 to whoever said something about how the set times were kinda weak. obviously markus and gareth in the morning sucked - i even missed gareth..and markus should have played that tent after dark, but he had another engagement so w/e. sunday school was the only tent that seemed to kind of get it right i feel like. i wish kalkbrenner had played later i would've liked to see him. cvs->reboot->paco was great tho. i think hilltop arena had no flow or progression or w/e at all and aside from redbull tent, mainstage was the one i avoided the most.
p.p.p.s. walking past the redbull tent a couple times ... ROFL. for rusko -> straight up a borderline cult. you look in there and the entire crowd is moving in unison, everybody dancing EXACTLY the same. i had to do like a triple take. and then after that for flying lotus, who i've seen before and kind of can get into ... pure hipster scene in there lol.
p.p.p.p.s. needs more lazers
