Scared my hearing might be shot

Since about a week ago, sounds in my left ear have been muffled, like someone put a low pass filter on it and turned down the volume a bit. Listening to music is very annoying because everything feels a bit lopsided. There is also a dull, nearly constant pain, but it is only mildly irritating, not strong enough that I feel the need to take anything. Wondering what might be going on, though.

I have no allergies at the moment and no other signs of cold or other sickness, and I don't remember being exposed to any especially loud sounds recently. I am seeing a doctor tomorrow about something unrelated to this, so I suppose I will ask her what she thinks.

Anyone else have hearing scares, or even permanently damaged hearing from illness or noise?

Could just be earwax. If the pain gets worse it might be an infection. You're probably not deaf in that ear, but you really should mention it to the doctor, because infections can lead there if left untreated.

As for the other part of your question, yeah, I've had some cumulative hearing loss from all the club nights. I can't really hear silence anymore, there's always very subtle white noise in the background that makes it hard to hear very quiet sounds. Nothing one can do about it though; just protect your ears so as not to make it worse.

go see an ENT. Could be a few things.

+1

I had some similar problems for the past few months, and it turns out that I have fluid in my ears that is not draining properly. In my case its allergy related, so the doc just prescribed some allergy medicine and it's already getting better.

their is also such a thing as trigger point thearpy that can cause problems as you decribe and more

tip: when you're not making mixing decisions on the bass portion of tracks....turn down the bass eq on your speakers/monitors or filter it out with EQ...this will help save your hearing in the long run...especially if you use headphones. It'll also help you make better music and mixes, lower frequencies get in the way of concentration and hearing the mid and higher frequencies properly.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-07-2010 00:21:

bass isn't what ruins your hearing. The natural resonances of your ear which tend to boost the mid range area are the frequencies which you need to care about. Oh kismet.

Posted by Kismet7 on Sep-07-2010 00:22:

Or even better...if you dont want to mess with EQ's...replace the kick for a while with a kick that is easier to listen to.

If you had some credibility...i'd believe you. You lost all of it in that other thread.

Even less credibility than before...you should read the Wiki you linked.

This is the only part you probably read "Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) typically is centered at 4000 Hz."

And missed...
"The louder the noise is, the shorter the safe amount of exposure is. Normally, the safe amount of exposure is reduced by a factor 2 for every additional 3 dB."

Some logic...A kick is by many dbs the loudest part of most electronic music, so it will have the most effect on hearing loss on average. Unless of course you are making music that has a mid range portion of your track consistently hitting high decibles every 4 bars. In that case you either suck at mixing or you are putting too much mid range in the track.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-07-2010 00:59:

Why is it louder? because your ear doesn't boost those frequencies so people artificially make it louder to compensate for your ears lack of sensitivity to those frequencies. Look at a fucking fletcher munson curve you dunce. Your ear is designed to be the most sensitive at 4 k which is why that area is the most dangerous you fucking idiot.

which bottom feeding barrel did they find you in? Human Resources = Fail

If you can explain how a -20db 4khz sound is more damaging than a -7db Kick sound in a dance track...you win something. I dont know what...but you win something.

now please shut the fuck up.

Retard of epic proportion, this is the sensitivity of the ear to hearing the oscillation of sound waves, it is not what determines hearing loss while making dance music. If anything listening to something that is 16khz or higher at the same decible of a 4khz should damage your ears far more than 4khz...which makes your whole logic based on this chart null and void.

I give up

Go get an education you fucking twat as you are too dense to comprehend anything. THink of the last time your ears hurt. Was it from bass frequencies ? Or was it some screeching sound that was around 4 kz. Your is more sensitive therefore the dB level is compounded making it more dangerous you fucking numbskull.

Well at least this time you ditched a failed argument...last thread you were going on with your BS. So I give you a pat on the back...where is that guy echosytem or MOK? You remind me of them, which alt are you?

have you finished high school ? I'm curious as to why you are so fucking stupid. Is it genetic ? Are you disabled ? Do you have some congenital disorder that makes you act like a monkey or do you do it on purpose to piss people off.

You actually have an education? You seem dumber the rock you live under. What was your previous user name...because you talk and debate the same way as another troll.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-07-2010 01:42:

I have a masters degree. What do you have ? Other than a phd in being a retard.

Posted by Kismet7 on Sep-07-2010 01:44:

...i'm still waiting for your explanation of how a -20dbfs 4khz sound is more damaging than a -7dbfs Kick.

Does your masters degree explain your failure at debating things you think you know? How did it help you here? And why did you end up here...talking bullshit if you have a master's degree? Something is wronggg somewhere...

a kick doesn't just have bass frequencies. Your initial argument was to lower the bass. That is absolutely retarded. And i've explained why bass is not as damaging as mid range frequencies. If you can't make the correlation between the that diagram and the topic at hand, you are stupid. What more can I say.

That diagram shows that a midrange signal at 4khz at 100 dB is just as stressing on the ear as a signal at 60hz at 125 dB. Is that so hard to understand you fucking twat. Can someone else please chime in so I don't have to deal with this idiot alone.
