Out of the scene and wanting a comeback

SO I've not really listened to much EDM since around 2005 when i stopped clubbing, I guess I went back to my indie / rock roots and would occasionally download a PVD/Tijs set just to keep my finger relatively near the pie.. I hasten to add i think i was a little dissapointed with pvd's efforts and really miss the genius of Nu Nrg - Giuseppe just doesnt do it for me as much as the duo used to, therefore am a little stuck for inspiration. I did recently (ish) discover Sven Vaeth, Hawtin & Villalobos and have seen Sven play @ Cocoon in Frankfurt on his Birthday - had a terrific night of tech / trance and everything in between..

Anyway, so with getting slightly back into the scene I want to know where the best sets are people are listening to, trance and prog..

Ive started following the Oslo nights crew whom ive many golden sets from the early 00's and Markus Schulz is really doing some outstanding sets - think his one from Nature one really worked well for me..

So give me some inspiration some sets, some singles that i should be listening to, some prime examples of modern day trance..

Ooh, and there are a few DJ sets in the DJ Promotion forum that you should check out (Jack Moss - Improper Trance, Sand Leaper's sets, Hamid, etc.)

I would add to those two the gareth emery podcast, others might debate with me whether emery is of the same quality as flemming/lawrence, in my opinion he is.

No, he has always had psy influences in his sets and music since the first set I listened to (Essential Mix 2001). Lately he has been dropping alot of good progressive stuff. These psy influences however are impossible really to go mainstream with unless you have wailing metal guitars like Infected Mushroom, and explain why J00F is still just as bangin today as he was in old good days of trance.

His 2010 Essential Mix is quite amazing indeed.

If you want actual trance music, J00F and Christopher Lawrence are the way to go, they seem to be the only two DJ's left who play real progressive trance. Everyone else moved onto other styles, such as laser unicorn rainbow vocal trance.

I'm not sure if I would say that either. Yeah, it's not like he's the best producer, but he has a good set of ideas behind a lot of his tracks. Although I'm sure you can credit most of the work to his supporting artists, basically guiding J00F's vision to reality:

I really enjoy most of his productions... New Beginning, now that was a sick tune!

But tbh he is best when teamed up with The Digital Blonde.

He is simply mediocre. When you have someone who bashes so much the current scene you would expect him to bring something new/change. Nothing, again and again the same boring sound.
Angel & Demons was a joke. Is really this to what trance should aspire?

I really enjoyed his productions before 2005 when he made trance with psy influences instead of just psy or progpsy. His tunes today with Digital Blonde are okey, its pretty much the only trance i can tolerate but still mediocre.

Posted by freakster on Oct-26-2010 19:32:

john is a legend. he is a quality producer and dj who is consistently good. the critics can go eat their cheese and leave the rest of us to enjoy trance which actually has some class.

Another joke.
If you wanna make serious psy do it, instead of adding "psy elements" cause that makes you look cool.
Anyway, even that was a failure experiment.
