Mad for Brad's Fight Club ( Looking for Contestants ) preliminary info

There has been quite a bit of trash talk lately and I think it is time for an old fashion battle royal.

Closing date to pledge is Septembre 17 ( technically the 16th 11:59 pm GMT )
Contest will start on the September 20
You will have minimum 1 month to finish

First Prize = 250$
Second Prize = 100$
Third Prize = 50$

You need a paypal account to get paid.

The rules will be quite simple. It is basically a remix competition for which I will be supplying the melodic content. The scope of the harmonic and melodic content will be suitable for those that prefer non melodic tech trance to Kysora homosexual trance. Everything else is up to the producer. The genre is not specific but please make it EDM. You will have about 1 month to finish the track.

The contest will be judged by some very qualified individuals that have agreed to lend their expertise for free. The winner will be decided by a very unbiased process where no style or person is favoured over the other. Each judge will be judging a certain aspect of the tune and there will be a grading criterion and rigorous feedback that will be made public so everyone has a chance to hear the tracks and see the feedback and learn. The prize money has no strings attached and all rights to the track will remain yours.

What I need right now are some contestants, The only requirement will be the use of of a certain harmonic and melodic passage which I will provide once I have enough contestants. You do not have to quote verbatim. In fact, the contestant will have to talk about their tune how they did it, how they incorporated the elements required and talk as much as they can about their track so that others can learn as well. As long as you can explain how you used the ideas no matter how mangled they are, that will be sufficient. In a way, this is sort of an assignment so that everyone including those not participating can learn. the only reason I'm including a requirement is so that nobody can just post a track that they've already spent time on.

If you already have a ton of releases and already make a living with EDM, please don't enter. I want this to be for those that are almost there and semi pro and need some encouragement.

So , if you want to enter, please pm me with contest in the subject line and provide a link to your latest track just incase I get an influx of contestants and have to narrow it down. The max amount will be 8 contestants for the sake of the judges as they are doing this for free. And since I can't really force you to finish and I don't feel like charging an entry fee, only commit if you really plant to enter. Those that don't finish the track will be insulted publicly in a manner that is quite vulgar and have their avatar changed to something quite homoerotic via the powers of Diginut.

Contest will start in a few weeks.

that's offputting

it is unfair that those that don't qualify if too many contestants express interest. If you don't plan to finish, don't enter. If you can't commit to making a track in one month, this isn't for you. I guess I just don't want some wanker wasting my time.

yes but there are legitimate reasons for not finishing though

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-11-2010 04:42:

no there aren't. If you can't commit to making a track in one month, it is unfair to those that could of taken the person's place. Don't enter if you don't plant to finish as this contest is aimed at people that aren't douchebags.

I'm assuming I get an automatic in considering I'm one of the ends of the spectrum your melodies/harmonies can work with, yes?

the first rule of fight club is you do not talk about fight club.

Can you abuse me now, because I often say i'll do something in a lifestyle that allows me to finish very little.

Great idea though. I may ask for the parts anyway so I can be definately not finish it.

Sounds very interesting... I might be in. (if accepted)

Labels nowadays always legally claim your remix as posession, have some strings attached or even want you to spend money for the remix parts.

So this is definitely a breath of fresh air and I appreciate Mad for Brad's commitment.

Let's hope this results in lots of great tracks!

too many rules imo

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-11-2010 12:41:

there is only one rule. The fact that i'm allowing Norwegians is rather unorthodox so you should be thankful.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Sep-11-2010 12:44:

oh i didnt know norwegians could, the other thread said otherwise, im very thankful. very much lol. i dont think i have time or skills to finish anyway though so ill pass this one. besides i have deleted my paypal. good luck people.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-11-2010 12:47:

for you , I will send a valentine o gram with a certified check. Enter the competition.

Everyone that has sent a pm has some great stuff so this is looking promising. Also those that think I hate them shouldn't shy away ie Kismet7 and RobbyRox. Your submissions will be treated the same as everyone else's.

I can also keep the submissions anonymous if you don't want people to know you need the cash for an 8 ball.

I'd love to see palm enter this, considering he always talks about how he hasn't finished a track in years

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-11-2010 15:01:

it would be nice. Also remember palm that I will probably keep all the entries anonymous so that nobody's ego will be hurt if they don't win the prize. All the public feedback will be given on tracks who's producer will be some number or carebear picture. Or my little pony. The point is that if you don't win, nobody except for me will know you entered and your street cred remains intact. Also on the topic of anonymity, the judges, will also remain anonymous so that nobody gets all pissy and starts harassing them.

Just accept in good faith that I am doing this to encourage people to make some great tracks, have some discussion on those tracks and in the end, everyone will have some fun and others can learn as well.

I've already transferred the funds to my paypal account so everything will proceed as planned on my end. Hopefully the courts will take this into account when they issue me my community service hours for buggering a minor.

can we not hear the content before signing up?

i have already started looking for a new avatar.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-11-2010 16:11:

nope. There will be 2-3 options and you can mangle the idea any way you see fit by just using a prominent interval, to just 2 chord successions to inverting the line or retrograding the line. Just trust that I know what I am doing an you will all be pleased by the material. I suppose I will allow anyone a few days to bow out of the contest to allow someone else to enter.

The goal is to be given something and being able to making something out of it and everyone will have the same material so things are more or less equal.

Subtle likes this.

Will the parts be available to those who can't enter, but might want a crack at a non entry version anyway?

Posted by JEO on Sep-11-2010 19:20:

Speculations say they will.

for this exact reason theres no point for me to enter as i already know it wont be finished. i dont want to take any others place in the contest as its limited to 8 participants. someone else should get the opportunity when i know im gonna fuck up and not finish. school and work, no chance to get time for music this fall (besides US$ is filled with bad karma).

and lol theres the catch. i knew it rofl.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-12-2010 03:53:

I might change the rules to you not finishing a tune makes Kismet7 the winner by default. How does that sit.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-13-2010 01:35:

yes all the parts will be public but since I made the melodies, those that entered the competition will be the only ones to use it without worrying about copyright. Not that I will or can afford to sue anyone as I don't really care but the people that put in the work should be able to add the track they made to their portfolio and I am quite an experienced composer and the melodies and chord progressions you will be getting will be unique and interesting.

It isn't something you download. Just some very interesting melodic / harmonic ideas that I will provide. They will range in difficulty from the hardest and In my opinion the coolest which uses a Neapolitan chord and modulates to a different key to something more simple and catchy and uplifting. Will probably have the cool one I mentioned and 2 more traditional catchy melodies one in major and one in minor.I probably wont' provide midi's because the context of the material will be very general in that I don't want to influence the way anyone uses the material from the rhythm to the setting. I will however provide the chord analysis and will answer any questions regarding the chord progressions and melodies if people need help. Some of them will be quite long with different iterations which you don't have to use but can if you plan to use a 32 bar melody.

The examples will be explained so that you will understand what makes each individual example different and how you can manipulate chop up or whatever you want to make it your own.
