Am very afraid of doing something wrong / having a lot of pain post-oral surgery
Sometime within the next month or two, I have to get 11 teeth
extracted by surgery (all at once, on one day, they told me). This
includes all 4 wisdom teeth as well as 7 others that are extremely decayed. I have read about the
experience & post-surgery on-line in a variety of sites and they all
mention lots of instructions, most of which I believe I am going to
have a hard time following. Stuff about changing gauze pads every 30
minutes (I don't know how to position these properly), for instance.
Also there was mention about that I'd need to continuously have ice
packs on my face. It seems the list of Dos & Don'ts is rather large &
I'm concerned that if I am unable to follow the instructions to the
letter, I will have a lot of pain, complications, or permanent damage
or other problems as a result of the affected areas (of which there
will be many) not healing properly if I can't accurately follow all
directions given to me. They have to go into the bone in some of these
areas, like the 4 impacted wisdoms.
I am also afraid that I will not be able to deal with whatever
physical pain I will have for the length of time post-surgery. I keep
hearing times not in minutes or hours, but in DAYS (as in 3 to 5
straight days), with the small possibility that it could even be weeks
before the pain is fully gone. Is there anything I can do to be 100 %
certain that I will not feel any pain in the days/weeks following
surgery? Are we that primitive health-care-wise that little can truly
be done about it? I understand that pain is a natural fact of life,
but what does one do when they really CAN NOT deal with it? Is there
something I can take that can either make me sleep it off for 16+
hours at a time? Would that work? Is there anyone I can call, anywhere
I can go, or anything I can do if I for instance wake up in bad pain
at 2 a.m. on day 2, or if for that matter, I can't sleep at all &
remain awake for the whole 4+ days straight?
What would happen if I OD'd (or took way over what I'm told to take)
on the painkillers I'm given? Will I die or have some type of
permanent damage?
Has anyone here had that many teeth extracted at once & can chime in on if I am blowing the anxiety out of proportion or if it's completely justified given how much that's to get done that day?
Shoulda thought of all that before you stopped brushing your teeth
As long as you take your meds BEFORE your pain sets in/gets worse, you should be able to manage it quite well. If the order says to take it every 4 hours, take it every 4 hours. You want that steady trough of med in your blood at all times.
Ali, your solution comes in two words: Al-Cohol

now now, some people have bad teeth regardless of their oral hygiene. my husband had to get all his teeth removed in april and get mediate dentures. His family has a condition (i don't know what it's called off hand) where their teeth just fall apart from not having much tooth enamel. eli had tons of fillings, root canals, implants and routine cleanings but nothing could save his teeth.
he got all his teeth removed at once, he didn't get any kind of anesthetics.. just freezing like you would get for a filling. It hurt and it hurt for a long time. there is no way to really sugar coat it. when we got back from the dentist, he started throwing up and shivering because his body went into total shock. there was alot of blood and we kept replacing the gauze until it was able to clot a bit. he used an icepack on and off so he didn't damage his skin. He was prescribed Tylenol 3's which he took with ibprophen to help reduce the swelling. he couldn't eat much but liquid and mush for days. in a few weeks he lost about 30 lbs. after about 5 days he had to go back to work, 10 hr days out in the oilfield. If you want to OD on your pills you run the risk of getting really sick and possibly dying (if you take enough) or going to the hospital and getting your stomach pumped (which would probably feel pretty rad after oral surgery..)
theres no way around it.. it's going to suck. i doubt you will cause any permanent damage from not following instructions properly, but keep your mouth clean and do what they tell you to do for recovery, it's not rocket science. So grow a pair and good luck!
You won't die if you dose to early, but my recommendaiton is to only take them when you feel pain, not like pez.
You'll eventually run out, and that is it.
Taking to many just causes concentration issues, and a general aloofness, that is not really caring too much about anything.
no jenny is right.. you have to take them before the pain gets real serious otherwise you're fucked. trust me, i've been in labour.. twice. the second time, he came so fast i didn't have time for the painkillers. besides, it's a rule of thumb.

The only "major" post surgery thing you'll have to worry about is what they call a dry socket. Basically it's when the scar tissue/scab gets sucked out of the hole too soon, you'll be OK as long as you don't gargle or drink through a straw (anything that will cause pressure or a vacuum in your mouth) too soon. Give it a week or so of healing and you'll be fine.
1. Prevent any type of suction in your mouth... aka straws etc. This can cause the blood clots in the extraction sites to dislodge and create what are called dry sockets. I can assure you that you do NOT want these.
2. When you rinse/clean your mouth, be VERY VERY gentle. Again, you don't want to dislodge the blood clots. Personally, I would avoid rinsing my mouth for a day or two... but that's because I had dry sockets and I would be terrified to get them again.
3. Go to a natural food store, or health store and get yourself a bottle of clove oil. Don't use it until a few days after the surgery (don't want to put this on freshly open wounds). SPARINGLY put the clove oil on the extraction sites (maybe with one of the syringes they will likely give you to flush out the extraction sites) and try to avoid swallowing it. It is a natural numbing agent that can alleviate a lot of pain. It tastes like ass and it will make you salivate more than you have ever salivated before, but it is a god send if you are in pain.
4. Take your painkillers before the pain sets in. Don't wait until it's unbearable. The reality is, it may hurt for several days and your face will probably be quite swollen and bruised.
5. Stock up on lots of soups, pudding, jello, anything soft. Go for broths (soups with nothing chunky in it) the first couple of days so you don't get any food particles stuck in the extraction sites. After a couple of days, you should be fine having soups with more sustenance.
Not to scare you, but I managed to get 2 dry sockets after my surgery. 1. because I create suction in my mouth when I sleep, and 2. I was way too thorough with rinsing/cleaning my mouth out too soon. You do NOT want dry sockets... trust me. It took me almost 3 weeks before I recovered from them and went through 2 scripts of T3's and also had some percocets. It was not a fun experience.
It's the first few days that you have to be the most careful because those are the days when the extraction sites are healing and sealing the blood clots. Just take it easy at first and be very careful. Otherwise, you should be fine.
After reading this thread I will be brushing my teeth 10 times a day

Granted you're getting 11 done (by the way what th fuck?), but they'll probably pump you full of valium and hit you with some nitrous (they did both for me) and you go out and come back up instantly without actually feeling/remembering anything. Then you'll most likely get a Vicodin, extra strength Ibuprofen, and Tylenol 3 prescription for pain (Vicodin for all day and Tylenol 3 to sleep). Take 2 Vicodin first thing in the morning with some milk and just take 1 Vicodin every 4 hours after that. Make sure you have something awesome to watch on tv (I recommend Life in HD) and don't try to jerk off, the Vicodin will make it take like 6 hours. ps At most the pain will last a week. Mine was about 4 days before I could try to eat more solid food and a little over a week before I could fully open my mouth (it was more swelling than anything). Also, an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen will help and you can probably take it with the Vicodin. |

I watched the Star Wars trilogy twice. Kept falling asleep.
Oh yea... that reminds me. Get loads of movies/TV shows etc. to watch. You wont want to do anything else.
I had all four wisdom teeth removed at once. I'm guessing they gave me nitrous, but I wasn't out 100%. I don't remember any pain during the surgery and it felt like I was asleep the whole time, but I do remember hearing the doctor's voice from time to time. I also remember hearing the grinding/scratching against my teeth, but I was in a state that I was happily asleep and did not care at all.
Post surgery I remember the first day I slept the majority of the day/night. I woke up with bloody gauze and all it took was just taking out the old gauze and stuffing my cheeks like a chipmunk with new gauze. The following days I would say was more annoyance than pain. My jaw was swollen to the point that I couldn't even fit a spoon into my mouth. I'd use ice packs a lot on and off in the beginning, but I don't remember doing it for more than a couple days.
Like others have said, just use up all the pain killers as they are prescribed, even if you don't feel any pain. Sometimes the drugs can take quite some time to kick in, so if you wait until you start feeling something, then you'll be in a lot of pain before the meds start working.
To be honest, I want to say that my surgery was not THAT bad. Like I said, I was just very uncomfortable and just wanted to lounge in my room and not do anything. After about a week or so I was pretty much back to normal. Don't know if this would apply to you, but I was in high school at the time and wasn't working, so I had a good 1.5 weeks of PURE bed rest with no worries of work or school, since I did it over spring break.
In case the wondering about why 11 teeth: 4 are impacted wisdoms & the other 7 are decayed. 4 of those other 7 are the teeth right next to each wisdom tooth (in the back, where one usually chews their food at). I never had good enough medical coverage that adequately covered dental care & I had to pay out of pocket to find out the information I found out recently about my teeth. Back in May & again in July, I had an infection & was on an antibiotic for 14 days. The dentist that gave me the antibiotic informed me of an impacted wisdom tooth but did not do a comprehensive exam. So I went to a private dentist (that doesn't take my coverage), paid for the exam, and got the full report.
I guess that's what not doing anything beyond the basics dental-wise for over 20 years does...
I would also recommend getting yourself some senokot, because with all those narcs you'll end up constipated.
i'm jealous.. when i was pregnant with my boy i had to get 3 impacted wisdom teeth removed. because i was pregnant they could only give me the bare minimum freezing and afterwards i could only take regular strength tylenol.
