| Report: Nevada governor candidate pitches speeding for dollars plan as budget fix by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Sep 8th 2010 at 10:58AM The state of Nevada is in one heck of a budget pinch, and candidate for governor Eugene "Gino" DiSimone is reportedly pitching some interesting ways of cutting the state's debt down to break-even. Beyond some controversial schemes that include pulling control of the Nevada National Guard away from the federal government and working out deals with mining companies to pay off debts in gold and silver, DiSimone also wants to open up the road to lead-foots. For a price. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, DiSimone thinks that letting commuters travel at up to 90 miles per hour without fear of getting a ticket can net the cash-strapped state $1 billion per year. The proposed fee for this right? A cool $25 a day. To reach the $1 billion mark, DiSimone expects to find 40 million takers over the course of a year. In theory, this plan appears to be sound. But after a bit of thought we're thinking speeding for dollars will likely never work. First off, the Nevada police don't seem to like the idea, as the fuzz thinks maintains there is a connection between speeding and deadly accidents. And if cash for speed is to work, police would have to diligently enforce the speeding laws for those who don't pony up $25 per diem. Further, critics are likely to argue that such measures will disproportionately target the less fortunate who won't be able to afford the tariff. Of course, such naysayers have a point. If you want to drive that fast every day for a month, that right would would cost you about $750. That's an awful lot of coin, and enough money to purchase one hell of a radar detector and pay off a couple of tickets to boot. Then there is the fact that many of the state's lead-footed already have detectors and already travel at speeds approaching 90 mph on the state's wide-open roads. So why pay the state for something you already do? Thanks to everyone for the tips. What do you think? Have your say in 'Comments.' |
it wouldn't work here because half the people on the highway travel 80 in a 100 which would cause disastrous accidents.
just like downloading music, why pay for something when i can do it for free?

not for that kind of coin.
I think that the 407 is too expensive too.
I'd be open to paying a toll on HOV lanes when im driving alone though. Right now, I work early in the hope of skipping traffic, but still get hit.
I agree the cost seems high but I wouldn't mind paying an extra $25.00 to know that I can drive whatever speed I want to get to my cottage on a friday afternoon.
Would I pay for speed?
hmmmmmmm....
probably.
I would pay good coin to drive fast.
180km/h would be nice...thats about the standard autobahn speed in
the left lane in Germany.
They have been doing in Italy for years.
Yes there is a speed limit in Italy. But on the Major Highways
you Pay Toll. And because you pay toll the Police consideres it
to be almost privat property and never patorl for speed.
In fact ive driven way faster and longer periods of timone on Italian
highway than german ones.
In Italy right lane highway speeds are like 90-120km but most people are doing like 160-200km/h in the left.
The italians got that system on Lock....Love it!!
Its not cheap but you can fly on the highways and they are the best
looking and kept highways in the world
We should do the same!!!!!!!
likely yes.
the whole "speed kills" is a crock. the 50 over law is a huge bunch of bs too.
*sigh* the days i could get to Ottawa in under 4 hrs doin some half decent speed....and I was never alone on the road doing so.
we have some proper highways for some sustained higher speed cruising.
now if only we taught people to GTFO out the fast lane.
I get bored on my annual drive from Vegas to LA, and I would pay the $25 if it cuts my time by an hour. Unfortunately it's only a 30min drive to Primm, and the rest of the drive is in Cali.

that's the worst shit ever! So if you have money, you can offically break the law now? Rules must be the same for everyone. How are they gonna explain speed limits? Does it mean someone who is going 90 miles and paid $25 is less dangerous than someone who didn't pay the fee but going at the same speed but.
This just proves that some of our traffic laws are nothing but a CASH GRAB!
if that was up to me, I would introduce a new type of drivers licence for advanced drivers and let them drive at higher speeds. If you can prove that your reaction is good and you can handle the speed without causing any danger, then you should be allowed to drive 15-20 kms faster than the losers around you.
FU police! Im tired of your nonsense!

we all know that in Italy they have the worst and best cars in the world.
Actually there are way more shitty cars..some cars cant even go faster than 120 in Italy going down a hill...lol
But believe me..if you have money and a decent car you are doing 160+
on the highways there...everyone does if your car is up to it..
that also why they dont patrol because its only about 15 percent of the people that drive that fast. But dont think they dont.
I was just here 2 weeks ago and got smoked by a brand new Volkswagen Scirrocco that was doing atleast 240..

Sure I would pay, but 25$ a day is pretty hefty. For the $9,125 that would cost a year, you're probably better to just risk a ticket and pay the fine and insurance premium if caught.

those lamborghinis are just for show. im sure they go on the highway once and awhile but rome police and milan police have a total of 6.
The police have already crash 2 of them themselfs and now they only have 4...lol
if you google it you can find the pics of the crash hiliarious..
and the fact that they are using lamborghinis is just a statement to make people think about it.
I would pay $100 a month for access to a dedicated lane...
$25 a day??? Not a chance...
