how do you define "fluffy trance"?

I was teasing my female friend on fb about her posting of a video of a dj she just saw in london, and i told her it was way too proggy for my taste. she chided me and said, "progressive - you're outta ur mind. it's fluffy trance."

I assume this means trance that FLOATS u in the clouds, with unicorns and rainbows flitting about. Does that sound about right? AVB being a major offender of "fluffy trance"?

It's not really a category unto itself, just a term used to describe Trance that attempts to evoke some elated sense of warmth (and often used pejoratively), which is largely associated with Epic/Melodic Trance, in which case the imagery you're linking with it sounds about right.

Why don't you tell us the name of this DJ she saw in London and then we could tell you exactly what he plays. How someone can think a fluffy trance DJ is in anyway progressive is beyond me.

There are loads of sets posted in DJ Promotion that claim to be "progressive trance" and it's all fluffy bullshit epic trance, just below 135bpm. Trance kids don't have a clue what progressive trance means these days.

Flowery lesbian trance

mmmm i think the best example you can find of fluffy trance nowadays is Above & Beyond.

And a progressive set would be something like Markus Schulz

fluffy trance makes me think of the Owl City/Adam Young stuff (although Fireflies isn't trance) tracks like Chicane - Middledistancerunner and Armin van Buuren - Youtopia

This is exactly what J was talking about.

Sorry that I'm not a musical expert. Hmmm, perhaps that's the very reason why I joined this group and am posting this very question? Perhaps I actually want to learn from other people who like similar music. Or maybe I joined b/c I enjoy being ripped a new a-hole by anonymous strangers on the web (my butt's bleeding profusely thank u).

Whatever crap dj my friend saw in london I've never heard of before but it was probably fluffy trance. very melodic, female dreamy vocals, sounds like something one of the more cheesy dutch trance dj's would do (much like A&B and AVB at their dreamiest).

I've not been into EDM for that long, but I've been very good about going out to check out as many dj's as possible and I know what I like, even if I can't articulate perfectly. Rodrigi Santos was actually helpful by listing examples, although some of u seem to dispute him. Can those who know pls list out a few more examples of famous dj's who are clearly fluffy vs. clearly progressive (or better yet list particular tracks to illustrate the difference and i'll go on youtube to check them out).

To me, defining progressive is like defining umami. people end up giving examples b/c it's tricky to actually define.

a soap opera set to electronica...

It's soft and cuddly trance that you can rest your head and take a nap on

Posted by Spoon Me on Sep-21-2010 00:25:

To me fluffy trance is more uplifting trance with all the nice piano bits and build up to a nice floaty hook. stuff like Armin, A&B and Roger Shah.

I think progressive trance has a more edgier side to it, I find it hard to explain though. Some examples might be Markus Schulz, BT, or Matt Darey.

this is a great analogy - i've had the same experience with trying to understand what prog is exactly.

please correct me if i'm wrong, but this is PROGRESSIVE trance/house, correct? I'm not really a technical person, but I think of progressive as typically super dreamy, echo'ey, using atmospheric sound as opposed to a driving melody to evocate emotion. typically lower bpm and long tracks (although this particular cut is only 5+ mins).

No, it isn't. This is:

Progressive trance is deeper, atmospheric and more hypnotic trance that tends to feature less in the way of vocals, big hooks, snare rolls, dramatic breakdowns and unicorn fluffiness. It has a similar vibe to classic trance but it tends to be slower, better produced and with less of the acid and arps.

Slowing an epic trance record down a bit, adding white noise and throwing in a massive side-chained bassline does not make it progressive.

thanks your description is helpful. what really confuses me is that people say Armin Van Buuren is progressive. so then I naturally assume vocals, dramatic breakdowns, dreamy. sorry to be dumb, but maybe someone can post an armin video (or other top ranked dj) then I would probably be able to understand better the concept - or even one which is progressive and one which is not. btw, I find avb boring, but he is a big name dj so i've seen him a number of times at massives (e.g. TAO last year) and have been duped into seeing him at club dates.

I'm certain that SYSTEM-J will speak to this but progressive, in this context, is almost a dead word because it's such an over-loaded marketing term.

None of the top-ranked DJs are progressive, and if anyone tells you they are then you can safely dismiss them as clueless. Progressive trance has not been popular for about ten years.

It has become a severely over-used word. People need to acknowledge that by now "progressive" is a genre in its own right, and it needs its own set of sub-genres to better classify the many types of progressive electronic music.

Posted by infiniteJEST on Sep-22-2010 01:06:

"Nice bro, I love progressive psy!"

"Well this is actually psy-progressive. Although these guys have lately been dicking around in dutch progressive and progressive progressive."

"Fuckin' shame, man."

"Fuckin' shame."

Posted by Rodri Santos on Sep-22-2010 08:08:

But it can be Progressive Trance or just Progressive which is often a denomination of Progressive House like:

And Markus Schulz plays more this than every other genre

# 1.If you suggest even one track that is already on the list, I will ignore all other tracks in your suggested list. Use edit/find (on this page), or hit control-f to search out tracks before recommending them. Don't just whip your playlist off into the comments, I want you to make sure it's a)better than some of the tracks on this list, and b)NOT ALREADY ON IT, before you suggest I add it. This list is massive, and the base of tracks it was selected out of is even bigger. I don't mean to be a jerk about it, but I don't have the time to sift through records that are already on the list. Plus, that tells me you didn't think about your suggestion.
# 2.If you've been listening to trance for less than 9 months, you have a DJ Mystik track on your computer anywhere, or you still (seriously) find tracks by typing "trance" or "techno" into a file sharing program, then please don't suggest anything. Your recommendation is going to be stupid. No, trust me. It is.
