Read This! Staying Current With Your Music

Hey everyone I want to DJ and I am just getting into all this. The first question I have is how do you follow the genre and stay current with whats hot? What outlets do you guys use to know whats hot right now?

I currently just listen to Trance Around The World Podcast and a few others. So basically I just get my songs from podcasts. Do you guys follow the record companies websites for new releases or how do you do it?

I get so overwhelmed with everything out there, I don't know where to start.

I'm very into the "follow this label" function on beatport. Pretty much whenever I buy a track I will follow the label, so afterward I can see if it's had any recent releases whenever I log in.

yeah...i would say just digging for music on sites like beatport...djdownload...etc. Also on XM (electric area) when they arent playing dj sets they play alot of new singles...

This. Also listen to radio shows/podcasts from the big-name artists/DJs. They will play tracks long before they are released.

I wrote this a while back too: http://thedjpodcast.com/articles/how-to-find-new-music/

when i was djeing i was downloading livesets and reading tracklists as a maniac. it always left me 2 months behind so its not recommended if you want to be a genre-pioneer. i still download sets as a maniac but now i dont read tracklists.

the My Beatport feature is great for following labels and artists.

What i do is a combo if both radio shows and beatport searching.

I spend about 2-4 hours a week beatport searching and i only follow a couple of shows. I try not to keep up with the top charts or whatever and search for the true gems instead.

I don't, I don't want to play the same tracks everyone else does.

This..

much more often i'll get a 'where do you find this stuff from' comment than a 'i fucking love this track!'...

It's not that i don't like being a sheep. But while browsing the likes of beatport i like getting lost by clicking on various artists, then their labels then other peoples labels until i find something i like. Whether it's current or not i haven't a clue. If i like it and it suits the night i'm playing at. I'll buy it

I try to do like N3lly & get stuff I like rather than worrying how new it is, in my sets I'll often chuck some oldies in if they fit the flow. I like to listen sets from some of the more obscure DJ's on etn.fm, di.fm, afterhours.org & often hear great tracks I've not heard before to add to the "wants" list

Add me to the "I don't" list. I don't want to play what's hot, I want to play good music.

I download the latest beatport songs from the internets pirate styles. Delete about 99% of them. Do this once a week. Don't really feel like paying for most of it as I don't really listen or use it and it is just to stay current with what is happening to music. Call it an industry perk ?

Posted by Zak McKracken on Sep-20-2010 12:42:

lol u discovered other subforums now? lol i cant wait to see the results of that.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-20-2010 12:50:

oh crap, I thought this was the production forum lol. TA somehow gives me live feeds from other forums.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Sep-20-2010 13:20:

u should try the COR, ud fit right in.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Sep-20-2010 13:29:

i check tracklists, beatport profiles of the labels or follow them on youtube , and then usually bookmark on my youtube favorites and when i want to download the music listen to all the tracks again and download a few.

To dj at clubs check the charts from different websites, to have a radioshow you need some quality music so listen to as much music you can wherever you can and develop a nice taste

Stop shit stirring nortek.
Leave that to me.

Brad, when you click on the Dj'in/Production/Promotion tab it lists all the sub forums and under that it lists all the new threads from all of those forums. That's how you probably ended up in here.

gross. The last thing I wanted to do was converse with djs. I think I caught an STD and slightly had my IQ lowered a few points. I hope it isn't permanent.

I can easily have you banned from the dj booth if you'd like?

replace industry perk by cheap.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Sep-20-2010 20:47:

The privilege of having me listen to their music and pass some of it off to some industry big wigs which rarely ever happens as it all tends to suck makes me feel absolutely no shame in thieving all of them. And considering the amount of time of have to spend to sort the shit for the less shit is so time consuming compounded with the fact that i'm not getting a penny for that time. I think I am quite generous. There are about 4 artists that I will pay as they are about the only ones that don't suck and wear stupid tiesto style's clothing while posing for some retarded album mix where the backdrop is some gay nature scene.

well just know that if you follow this course of action, I could easily have you banned from the production forum where all posturing djs perhaps even yourself aspire to graduate from playing other people's music to actually making their own. But of course, I think most mods would see this altercation as a try hard with an over stated self of entitlement not being able to take a joke.

Hey great article! I read it and it gave me some awesome strategies to get started with! thank you!

Also everyone else thanks for the advice, I am going to look into some of the other ways mentioned. I love the "save the label on youtube" tip. I never thought about that! you are right though i noticed with labels like Anjuna they put little 3min snippets which are just enough for me to see if I like the song.
