FAO: Brits, Scots, Poms, and all you tossers from the UK!
All right, let's sort a few things out here.
England claims to be a country. Cool. So does Scotland. Nice. No one really cares about Wales as Matt Acton is the only cool person that territory has ever given us after Bertrand Russell, but I bet they reckon they're a country too. Good. And then there's Northern Ireland, claiming not to be Ireland. Okay. And there's the United Kingdom. A country made up of other countries. A country made up of other countries!? What do you lot think you're doing!?
Well, guess what: No, you can't have your cake and eat it! Either the UK is a country and everything in it is a bloody territory/region/province/non-countrical-state-and-I-don't-care-if-countrical-isn't-a-proper-word or England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are countries and the United Kingdom is just an Anti-Continent Alliance acting all smug for having more coastline than the average European country - and even then you're not sexy enough to lure the Irish into your country.
So make up your minds already, and stop confusing the rest of us! You participate in the Olympics as one country in order to get more medals but you have four different football teams trying to qualify for the World Cup - what are we to make of it? And you don't want us to say "the Americans tied with the Brits in South Africa because only the English were playing"? Aaaww, sod off you cheating gits, and get the hell out of the fence! Can you guys please stop playing Lego with the Union Jack and accept the fact that no one else sees you as a handful of schizoid countries but yourselves? If you don't like one another, let it go! It's not like anything will change legally as you're all part of the European Union anyway.
In any case, we're tired of waiting for you to decide. This is it: we foreigners are taking this matter into our own hands and we're going to decide in this thread if you're just one big country of 4 small countries. No, you can't give us your opinion, we're not listening any more
CORe version: How many countries are there in the dark green area?

Acton is Welsh?
I am awaiting Jack Ryan's answer.

I don't think the UK is considered a country so this thread is a FAIL. Sorry Lira.
edit: from Wikipedia:

| The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and unitary state consisting of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. |

It's not a proper country. It's the same as Yugoslavia and the USSR were. Acting as one entity but always made up of separate nations, 4 in this case.
ok so the UK is a country but England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland are not.

as for the irish..well they are a species of their own.
Ireland deserves to be its own country, for no other reason that they are speaking with the best damn accent off all the english speaking countries. Seriously.
