Read This! CNN article: Hard-Disk DJs "spin" MP3s

Here's what CNN has to say...

that looks messed. in my opinion, i'd prefer the real turntables instead of some funky 10 gig mp3 gadget. I find the whole mp3 dj thing stupid, even though i mix with traktor right now, i wouldn't do mp3 mixing in a club.

i bet that donnie darkwave person was inspired by the movie donnie darko

This is good for the DJ who doesn't do it full-time. It's good for the DJ who might do it once every few months for a small audience but, nothing REALLY big...

...In real-time in front of a LOT of people?

Posted by ampburner on Jul-28-2002 23:38:

lol I like how the guy in the article states that:
quote:
"When I was younger I felt like there was a talent to it because they were spinning records backwards and forwards and really cutting it in and overlapping songs," Parrish says. "It doesn't take much talent to be a DJ anymore. You just have to have a good flow of songs."

I don't know wheter to " " or " "

Posted by quddha on Jul-29-2002 00:06:

lol, the dude's a human jukebox, nothing more.

you can't beatmatch with those things. its like hooking up two walkmans to a mixer and fading the songs.

If he hooked up a laptop and used VTT or something, i'd give him more respect.

Posted by mr. poopyhead on Jul-29-2002 02:43:

hahaha.. why the HELL would you need 2 of them if you can't beatmatch??

winamp has a crossfader function, just bring a laptop and leave a playlist running. a blind monkey could pull that off.

Shame / Disagreement

Parrish says. "It doesn't take much talent to be a DJ anymore. You just have to have a good flow of songs."!!

atomix is crap for me, it only beatmatches up to about 90% accuracy (which is v bad) the bass controllers are wandy round knobs which are right awkward on comp, and instead of slowing tracks ddown it just cuts out (rather large) chunks to make it seem faster, but just gliches loads.

or have i got some dodgy version?

I agree somewhat to that. Really, mixing doesnt take too much, its not like djs are mozart or rachmaninoff or something. Just about anyone can mix records its not rocket science.

Posted by ampburner on Jul-30-2002 00:13:

yeah but the guy in the article was talking about 'the type of dj that doesn't beatmatch', that's what he refered to when he said its 'easier nowadays'. he's just ignorant

Posted by JohnSmith on Jul-30-2002 00:15:

Well, true that anyone can do it.

but, not everyone can do it well. picking the right tracks is part of it, but you also have to know how to mix, what songs go together, etc.

i use Traktor to mix live and stream over the net all the time. Not prerecorded sets, works great!!! i've had people ask where they can buy my "Cd's" lol

Of course i'd rather have some techs but till i can afford them AND the vinyl it won't happen

Posted by jdat on Jul-30-2002 10:21:

truthfully for the people on TA who are gonna mix mp3 is only cause they download mp3 ( most of them I'd say ) not cause they rip

here was my off subject statement.

I have read the article..and i think....it's disgusting... The guy how wrote this knows nothing about the DJ CULTURE and electronic music life forms... anyway...

I think you are right jdat...
And I'm one of them....but I'd love to mix with vinlys...

Posted by Mikrop on Jul-30-2002 17:56:

What a load of crap man... No talent... This guy should go to a real club and see what it's all about... what a LOSER!!!

Posted by Dj Ahter on Jul-30-2002 18:07:

yeah, that's a good thing to do..much better than those single players!

The only Djing I'd do with mp3s in a larger club is with those records that hook up to your puter or something....forgot what it was called.......freakin......

But anyways......you still get the feel of mixing Vinyl and still get to play with the mixer I think.....never tried it......cost to much.......

Posted by ShadoWolf on Aug-01-2002 00:18:

Smiley DJ

there are a few WinAmp plugins that allow mixing, beat matching, tempo and pitch adjustments, etc.

Posted by Spad on Aug-01-2002 00:40:

Being a DJ isn't all about mixing. Sorry if this insults some people, but there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who can mix two tunes together just as well as Armin, Ferry or PvD, just as there are a large number of big-names who's mixing isn't 100%.

Being a good DJ is about creating an atmosphere and connecting with the crowd. When I'm at a club listening to Picotto do I really care if the tunes are coming from a record, CD or mp3? No.

The DJ's of the future (and to an extent the present) will use all kinds of media in their sets. Mp3 is just another way to store music. It's the music we go clubbing for, not a round plastic-like disc with grooves in it.
