I tried checking out some of his stuff, and it sounded like the sortof thing I'd really like... but upon hearing it I was more get to the excellent stuff already.

In my opinion, he's an extremely talented producer, I don't think many people will argue with that. Although I like some of his tunes, his style really isn't for me.

I've just been reminded of that picture at an Aphex Twin gig, the one with everyone in the crowd with their fingers in their ears, can anyone find it? Or know which one I'm talking about?

Aphex Twin is not "probably the best electronic musician ever". Overrated, dull, boring and uninspired. It's the equivalent of looking at at a Damien Hurst painting, and comparing it to the the Rennaisance masters.

I'll concede that most people who "rate" him are probably quite unfamiliar with the body of Richard's work, but dull and uninspired? What the fuck am I reading?

Richard is an artist of rare talent and variety, and even rarer public appearances that are generally quite derisive of the bullshit most of the electronic "scene" churns out these days. I suppose some of the responses here shouldn't surprise me much.

Overrated maybe, but he's everything but dull, boring and uninspired. If you're trying to discredit someone who's universally regarded as one of the best electronic musicians ever (and that's certainly not just my or Hypersawed's opinion), at least make a little effort and throw in an argument or two. Otherwise your post will be the only thing that seems uninspired.

About Richard: the guy is already in the business for 20 years and has produced everything from techno, electro, rave, IDM, ambient, drone, acid, drum & bass (and I'm not talking about odd track here and there, but huge quantities). He was actively engaged in creation of Warp's legendary Artificial Intelligence series, he was one of the first guys who started to produce techno in UK (marked with inclusion of his three tracks on the first UK techno compilation "The Philosophy Of Sound And Machine"), together with Autechre and Beaumont Hannant he shaped the sound of IDM, he demonstrated his innovativeness with tracks like Digeridoo (which completely shook techno scene at the time, since it was totally different from anything released before and after), Ventolin and Come To Daddy (death metal meets electronic music, again completely unlike anything produced at the time), he was also one of the creators (together with Vibert and Squarepusher) of so-called drill 'n bass sound in the mid 90s, plus million other things.

If you want to call someone dull, boring or uninspired there are literally thousands of producers who deserve that label more (suggestion: 99% of modern dance music producers). The guy who accomplished everything written earlier is certainly none of the above.
