Dave King - Reminiscence Part Deux [Old Prog/Trance]

A couple of years back I did a Reminiscence mix where the premise was just a collection of older records that I quite enjoyed. I've been meaning to do another one for a while since spending a fair bit on acquiring a load more of my favourite records from various second hand emporiums and here it is. Almost vinyl only (95%) it was mostly unplanned and as such in places the mixing isnt as perfect as it could be but its certainly listenable

never miss a mix from yours and this certainly looks tasty

this is really good, your trackselection and mixing holds the usual high quality. i really liked how you built it up with those killer progressive trancers peaking with the chain and bringing it down again to build again. you choice of ending with velvet is immense. only critisism is that you should have taken of eichelrück earlier or taken off more of the highs, it created a little dissonance in that transition

ye, well done again mate

Cheers man, glad you enjoyed it. I was slightly worried I'd dropped it down too far with The Labyrinth but I guess not I know what you mean about the mix into Gouryella, it seemed to work nicely at the time but it doesnt really stand up to repeat listening.

Thanks a lot dude, cheers for listening

So many old tracks I'd practically forgotten about

Yeah a couple of spots where the beer shows through more than others, but who really cares? I don't think I'd want to hear a mix of old tunes where the mixing was computer-perfect throughout, it wouldn't be authentic.

It's all about being taken back to the days before all the pretentious ****s appeared in the scene.

DJ Remy - Butterfly (Papa & Gilbey Remix)

Fantastic selection of tracks from the days when I first started getting into trance and prog. Great work, I love it!

My main complaint though is that the mixing from The Chain into Infectious clanged for a few seconds, and that there was a lot of distortion in Infectious (a favorite song of mine, no less).

Gah yes I know, it fucks me off everytime I listen back to this as well. Almost nailed it too

The distortion on Infectious is on the vinyl, I think theres some dirt in the grooves but everything I've tried to clean it doesnt seem to have worked. The perils of second hand records I guess.

Cheers for listening though dude, and thanks to you and others for the kind words

Spot of thread necromancy here, as I saw you'd entered this into some kind of trance classics competition on Soundcloud and decided to give the original a download. Took it out on what was supposed to be a straightforward 14 mile run on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Proceeded to get lost with it... quite literally, as I took a wrong turn at a roundabout and spent a mile or two running around the Yorkshire countryside trying to figure out where the fuck I was, but not really minding because the mix was absolutely peaking.

Yeah, this is fucking badass alright. Same kind of style as my Rapid Transit efforts but takes the piss out of them because you mixed it all on vinyl and apparently made it up as you went along. Yeah, there were a couple of minor clangers but generally the mixing was extremely solid and the flow was perfecto. The way it builds and builds at the start is perfect for running and Eterna into Deep Blue Dream blew it up at exactly the right moment. The Chain is just one of the baddest peak time prog stompers ever committed to plastic and the fact I was charging down a massive hill and over a bridge at that point meant I was rushing just as much as hearing it on a dancefloor. I'd also never given the Oliver Lieb mix of Love Stimulation its due - I've had that mix somewhere for years but it was only hearing it here that I realised just how good it is.

The aforementioned wrong turn meant I was out there for a bit longer than I intended to, and on the home stretch once I'd found my bearings the blood sugar was dipping and my earlier adrenaline high was receding into the familiar jaw-clenching endurance test of the end-game of a long run... much like getting to 6am in a club, in fact, and starting to glance at the time every 10 minutes. And just like in a club, what you need in those moments is a deep but uplifting tune to bring you back to life, and the Rank 1 mix of Superstring was exactly that track. Coming after a couple of heads-down gurners it put a big grin back on my face and at that moment I knew everything was fine and I was getting home with a bounce in my stride. I can even forgive you dropping Gouryella at the end, rubbish though it undoubtedly is.

It might have just been the perfect conditions that made it, but I haven't enjoyed hearing a mix this much for ages. The tracklist had just the right combination of tunes I love, in just the right places, and top quality unknowns joining the dots. I know it's over five years old now, but this really is a sterling effort mate.
