The truth about the poor quality of galaxy & other uk radio streams

Over the last couple of weeks, there have been events played by uk based radio shows and to be honest, as someone from the UK I am appalled by them, and for anyone who's wondering why theres only shitty 20kbps streams heres your reason...

The whole UK is a long way behind in broadband internet, not 1 in 20 households have ADSL or Cable connections which is a shame, as if people paid for them it could be good.

The sad thing is that I know People (luke, mikey etc) who are prepared to pay for this service but for a country like the UK who are meant to be such a first world country, not every area in the country is even able to handle the cable, not enough exchanges etc.

Coming back to the music thing, the people who run such stations probably don't realise that some of us can take such good streams (upto 128kbps wouldn't be too much to ask would it, even 64kbps) so appologies from me & everyone who lives in a country who spend too much on useless things like a dome and stuff thats shite, and not enough on technological advances that could bring us all decent qualities of listening online

So come on to anyone in the UK, sort it out now

Rant over

Cool

i can't be arsed to say much coz im fukked, but i agree 100%

Posted by webmeister on Jul-29-2002 11:51:

Same problem here in Oz .. main phone company doesn't want to lower prices for broadband, instead tries to push people onto useless 1 gig capped connections etc.

And then they can't figure out why nobody wants their shitty broadband....really gets me angry

Think what takes the piss more now is tony good old blair now wants to build an entire private health care system for illegal asyslem seekers! wtf!! firstly, they're illegal, and second our own health care system doesnt work even work properly and then we're gona spend millions building another one for people who technically shouldnt even be here! wtf is going on here anymore!

Our exchange was only upgraded to ADSL a month ago. I wanted ADSL over two years ago ffs! Well I'm alright now but most of the country isn't Its bout time they sorted it out and actually did something right to this country to help people, instead of splashing out millions of pounds for pointless projects like the dome and all that shit!

It's weird cause it seems that in Canada has broadband. There is so much competition between companies here and its relatively cheap and easy to get pretty anywhere. I know for a fact we are even ahead of the United States broadband wise. I don't understand why other countires dont get hooked up with high speed internet. And I am pretty sure that Canada is the only country in the world that has plans for a cross country broadband network so everyone can have affordable high speed internet.

Smile

2 in 5 canadians have high speed internet, so 40% of a country of 33 million ppl have it. By 2008, the cdn gov't hopes to have 90% of the population on high speed.

the sad fact as ppl like Coup & Ste pointed out is that the government would rather spend money on treating illegal immigrants whilst ppl who pay their taxes get jackshit for their money but paying for a bunch of old bastards to moan @ each other everyday in parliament, it dont matter who u vote for, ur always screwed, and they dont make the speed available.

When i bought my adsl 16 months ago, the bt ppl tried to talk me into an isdn line, and they wanted to charge me more for that with line rental & dialup access than give me the 4 times more speed adsl brings me, it sucks that when u know what they want they argue, they really need to get priorities right

i could go on about this country for hours, like i have been doing in the chatroom! but ill call in another expert

Here in Ireland there is no broadband AT ALL.

And no unmetered packages either.

Its pay-per-minute 56k or nothing.

I am happy to say that here Broadband is slowly getting standart, most people I know have it, and it's pretty cheap compared to phone modem connections.

Yeah the UK is so ridiculously behind the 8 ball with internet access its ridiculous, it's all bloody BT's fault, I mean the UK is the only civilised country on earth to charge for local phone calls - for as long as BT have their monopoly on telephone lines and charge by the minute it's hardly in their best interest to upgrade the internet. Slow connection = people stay on line longer = BT get to milk their cash cow even harder.

Tony Blair had to virtually hold a gun to BT's heads to even get them to free up local exchanges to third party ISP's a couple of years back, who were in turn still getting charged by the minute from BT for our access, which is why most of the first generation attempts at flat-rate 56K access fell flat a couple of years back.

Even now, the idle money-grubbing pricks reckon they won't finish upgrading the phone exchanges for ADSL for another few years ... ffs it shouldn't take more than a few WEEKS to sort out the entire country if they had their priorities in order. They will make sure to extract every last precious penny from us 56K'ers before they release their claws

Man .. I wish Australia had a forward-thinking government like this ....

Instead we get fricking John Howard trying to wind back the clock to the 1950s!!! He is hopeless with technology, all he does is what his rich mates that own the newspapers tell him to do (ie make laws to protect existing monopolies)

We need 2 get rid of him sooo bad

A lot of these problems came from the Thatcher era, she completely fucked this country up and we are still paying the price.

She was the ultimate capitalist, she privatised everything. She had this whacky idea that everyone could own a business, that absolute competition produced absolute value, and she was proven tragically wrong. She failed to realise the benefits of moderation, that competition was good but so is economies of scale. What she also failed to realise was that 99% of businesses think about one thing: "money!". They will shirk any responsibilities, including customer satisfaction and even safety if it serves their own pockets (my uncle was killed in a rail accident; the owners of the tracks, the stations and the trains all argued over who was responsible for safety! Five years on, and five fatal crashes since, the problem of responsibility has still not been resolved).

There are some things which must be left to the state, however costly that may be. Another problem was the destruction of the regulatory bodies who ensure privatisation works.

If you leave the market to private enterprise, you must regulate the market to ensure competition remains high and laws are adhered to. Otherwise capitalism breaks down. These UK bodies (the Competition Commission, Monopolies and Mergers Commission and Office of Fair Trading) are better than they used to be, but still pretty farcical compared to those of our neighbours.

We are gradually recovering from the destruction of the 80s and the Thatcher era (she also brought unemployment to it's highest in decades), but we still have some way to go.

I think things are improving though, the UK's supermarket industry for example, a huge industry it is indeed, is more competitive than ever and the regulatory bodies seem to be doing a good job.

People always assume the reason petrol is so much more expensive in the UK than in the US is because we "accept it". This is absolute nonsense. The reason, besides the absolute gridlock in London (the average car in central London drives at just 11 mph!) and the 80% tax of the government, is that the suppliers collude anyway. What a lot of people don't realise is that what happens in the middle east has no effect whatsoever on the price of oil in the UK! British suppliers (eg Esso, BP, Shell etc) get their oil from the North Sea, they have their own supplies. Only supermarket garages get their oil from the open market in Holland, where Opec trade. Everyone exploits this ignorance anyway though, and whenever there's trouble in the middle east, they jack up the prices.

We need more nationalisation in certain areas and regulation for certain industries. Our public transport would run at a loss if it was nationalised, but so what? Everyone else's does. As I see it, this is the only way forward...
