eating squid? (chinese food)

so I recently got some wonton soup, and it had squid in it. The squid bits looked like this.

the taste was repulsive and the texture was creepy and almost inedible. Has anybody ever eaten the squid (tentacles i assume) like pictured? What is the appeal?

that is the first time i've seen squid in wonton soup.

squid is one of those foods that can be scary because if it isn't cooked properly it can be the most repulsive piece of rubber that you ever put into your mouth.

if cooked properly it can be one of the most tender and tasty seafoods out there. 2 ways to do it:

fast at high heat

slow at very low heat.

any mistake and you are eating a dog chew toy.

Squid like that is quite common in Chinese food.
There are a lot more things that would repulse non-Chinese in Chinese style soup. Like, i'd imagine, pig's intestine.

i think the most disgusting seafood i had in asia was cuttlefish.

i can only describe it as eating a row of christmas tree lights.

Squid is one of my favorite, again, when cooked properly.
I recently happen to walk into a Vietnamese store and they had dry squid. Reminded me of beef jerky but full squid flavor.

Calamari's awesome!

indeed it is.

it is just too bad most places get it completely wrong making many think that this is the way the dish is supposed to taste and giving squid a bad name.

I heard letting squid soak in milk for a while before cooking helps tremendously btw.

Yes it does. I worked at a restaurant where they did just that.

The fatty acids serve as a lotion to soften the outer layer of the squid's skin.

i buy squid ink for pasta all of the time.

it tastes really good if you know how to use it...just don't wear white when cooking with it.

I'm going to assume that's a common Sea Urchin. I've eaten it served as Sushi, but not like that...

Posted by Goebbel Goebbel on Oct-21-2010 20:17:

that is raw sea urchin, i assume that what you consider as sushi would make the japanese point and laugh at you while commenting on your big white man penis

Not exactly, I'm a huge fan of Sushi/Sashimi and I love going to 'genuine' Japanese restaurants. That being said, I've still not had Urchin served like that, although I'm certainly going to ask for it like that next time.

it might look a little weird, but it is the food of champions.

the other comment was directed at people that love sushi but have never really had what the japanese would eat aka bastard foreigner sushi...if i see a sushi pizza on the menu, i walk out of the place

what is what this sushi pizza fad? uuuuuuuuugh.

ever have Abalone Jay?

Posted by Goebbel Goebbel on Oct-21-2010 22:37:

ever eat matzoh?

not kosher are you?

abalone is quite good, especially in a ceviche.

Posted by Adam420 on Oct-21-2010 22:41:

no I'm not kosher at all. You knew this though (I wouldn't have asked for tips on preparing baby back ribs otherwise, would I?).

Do you ever watch No Reservations Jay? I have a feeling you would really like that show.

p.s. while at Insight, did you ever work with a Ralph Di-something?

Posted by Goebbel Goebbel on Oct-21-2010 22:46:

doesn't ring a bell.

i know you are not kosher, i just like giving you shit for killing jesus.

i like no reservations quite a bit but stopped watching it since it plays at ridiculous hours.
